Hey folks!

Please do NOT report artists for sharing links to where their art is available to purchase!

Just DO NOT be such a jerk!

If you want artists to keep sharing their work on mastodon, this whole "absolute no commercial posts at all" attitude has to stop. There is a huge difference between a big corporate ad campaign and an individual artist posting a link to their own art shop.

Edit/Update: Well, this blew up. I'm muting now, and won't see replies.

My hot take on the Vision Pro is the same as my hot take on every AR/VR/Mixed Reality headset produced in the past checks notes 20 years: "If most women can't use your product for 4 hours straight without throwing up, don't try to tell me that it's the future of anything." I said what I said.

Women can use a smartphone indefinitely without nausea. They can use a laptop indefinitely. A gaming console and TV indefinitely. But XR headsets cause motion sickness in most women in under an hour. 🤷🏿‍♂️

kristinHenry,
@kristinHenry@vis.social avatar

@mekkaokereke My public speaking opportunities also disappeared. So I had less options for helping the clients who needed me to find me.

My work is...ummm...not a carbon copy of what's usually out there.

I ended up doing a mid-career grad-school adventure in Computer Science. Most of which I use in my independent research now.

But my career (and finances) never recovered from getting fired for getting sick from 3d/vr work.

kristinHenry,
@kristinHenry@vis.social avatar

@mekkaokereke It was a huge blow to my career and finances.

As a consultant, a lot of my work involves new clients finding me.

I had joined the company, when they promised they would take care of the paperwork stuff and I could just focus on the work.

Then they pulled this on me, and there was nothing I could do.

Yeah, I was the only female engineer/scientist/artist in the company.

I was the only one that gets sick from 3d/vr stuff.

kristinHenry,
@kristinHenry@vis.social avatar

@mekkaokereke I was once fired from a job, where I had brought in a huge new client, because the 'boss' was annoyed that I declined to work on a 3d project because I said I was 'not comfortable' with 3d stuff.

He was really angry about it, and never gave me the chance to say that while I got headaches from it. He just blustered and stole my client.

Then he got nice(r) when I mentioned that if they fired me they would to have get a security clearance because the project was tied to mine.

Hey vis.social folks!

I don't usually make announcements when I add an instance to our blocklist, unless it's temporary limit (usually due to spam).

But today, I put threads.net on our block list as Suspended/blocked.

Lots of reasons, but I really don't want to rehash what so many others have said so well.

In case you were looking forward to facebook-on-fedi, I'm afraid this instance won't be participating.

What an amazing artist has passed today. I'm guessing that lots of my friends here already know about Vera Molnar's work.

In case you don't, here's her wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vera_Moln%C3%A1r

"Molnar is widely considered to be a pioneer of computer art and generative art..."

I hope that her website will be maintained: http://www.veramolnar.com/

The fact that most Science education is structured to 'weed out' students, at the expense creating a well educated science-literate general population will never cease to boil my blood.

I've spent so much of my life working to increase science literacy, and I'm still so very frustrated.

Day 11 of

Today, I'm sharing one of my all time favorite textile/embroidery pieces: an embroidered diagram of a cell. :D

Since it's , I'm sharing a piece from one of my all time favorite series: "Generative Nerves"

I first started creating these, with code, over 10 years ago, and I come back to it again and again.

It's finally time! For day 1, I'm sharing one of my favorite pieces: generative nerves. A piece I created with code, and exploring neural growth patterns.

Day 2 of

Today, I'm sharing a project that got stalled and I hope to come back to it eventually.

This one is created with code, inspired by Chemistry and Physics. I create my particles and let them 'bounce around'. As they collide, they 'draw' traces, and so the image slowly develops. In this piece, I'm constricting the spaces the particles can play in to rectangles that look like they could be a quilt.

Day 20 of

In last year's Genuary Creative Coding challenge, one of the prompts was "generative music". I went visual and created an image from musical notes.

A few years ago, @nervous_jessica and @nervous_jesse added the ability to order one of their puzzles with your own art.

I couldn't resist ordering some with my artwork. And I've had some in our puzzle stash.

For the last few days I've been working on one of the small ones. Super hard to figure out, but super satisfying to complete.

Completed wooden jigsaw puzzle on a wood table top. The abstract pattern has circles and squares.

Over the years, I've played with code and particle systems to create art. In the systems I develop, each particle has an atomic number and interacts with other particles based on their atomic numbers. In various ways, they 'draw' when they collide.

In this piece, I'm combining one of these particle systems with the Fibonacci system.

The end result? Looks a bit like a quilt, I think.

Today, for , I'm sharing one of my favorite pieces: a hand embroidered diagram of a cell. All of the lines are chain-stitched, except the nucleus which is french knots and straight stitches.

You can't tell in this photo, but this thread glows in the dark.

I also do this pattern in colorful threads.

One of the things I love about sticky-notes is that they don't damage anything they're stuck to. So, I could maybe stick one to the edge of a mirror in the ladies room of a restaurant. And it wouldn't damage anything.

If you'd like a few of these sticky-notes, you can sign up for my project and mention 'Sticky Notes' in the 'comment' field.

This way, I can send you these and you can help with my project as well,

kristinHenry,
@kristinHenry@vis.social avatar

This weekend, I'll be working on getting a batch of these ready to go out with Monday's mail.

Then, I'll be offline for a while.

So, if you wanted any of these sticky notes, now is the time to sign up for me to mail some to you. Hopefully, you'll stick them in places where folks might learn something from them.

Make sure you mention "sticky notes" in the questions and comments field in the form: forms.gle/7YQSub2WfpG1vYjs7

In Strange New Worlds, someone says something like, "on this ship where we never know if we will die on the next mission or not, or meet an amazing new species...we must take time to celebrate the wins when we can"

We're all now faced with so much uncertainty and so many potential and occurring catastrophes and atrocities...we must take time to be human and be happy for ever briefer moments. And support each other

How else can we go forward? How else can we get through all this?

Day 3 of

Today, I'm sharing a piece I call "Self-Drawing Code". It's both an image and python code. The code takes itself, as a string of text, and creates an image based on the each letter, number, space, and special character in that text.

My main inspiration was protein folding, and how the amino acids in a protein determine how the 3d protein structure forms.

Here's the current state of the internet and medical care:

I have a procedure scheduled next month, and I can't download the pre-op instructions.

I report this issue, and they reply with 'have you tried with a different browser'.

My browser of choice is FireFox. And they want me to give up the privacy protection, when interacting with my doctors?

You've heard of the Concorde Fallacy? Where more and more money is poured into a project, despite lack of results, just because so much money has already been poured into it?

I'd like to propose the Khan Fallacy, where a guy does some decent tutorials about basic mathematics and then gets money to do terrible tutorials about Biology and other complex subjects, and then gets more funding to unleash AI-chatbot tutors that can't do math.

Hey vis.social folks!

I've been working on a new community instance for the past few months. It's still a work-in--progress, but is ready for a slow opening.

So, if you feel constrained by the on-topic nature of our Local Timeline here on vis.social, or you don't want to CW your posts that mention AI tech, you might be happier on the new instance: datavis.social

Can you stay here on vis.social and ALSO have an account on datavis.social? Yes!
