What started as a peaceful walkout this morning by hundreds of university staff, professors, lecturers in protest against police violence against students last week is now developing and escalating once again.
The riot police are here, hundreds of them are blocking the entrance to the university. After the university staff finished their rally, the students went in and they have built some tents right into the main hall.
The police are now coming in and [the students] are trying to block the police. They managed for a few minutes but now the police car van is driving towards the entrance and everyone here is very much hoping that the same scenario that happened last week is not repeated here.
The protests are against the war in Gaza and they’re also demanding the university to cut ties with Israeli universities but also to protest against police violence and what they say is a violation of their rights to demonstrate.
So far I’ve only seen peaceful protesters and the police is coming in and of course, there’s a lot of trauma after what happened last week so the situation is quite agitated.
#Fortson’s death reflects a continuing pattern seen in countless other cases where innocent #BlackPeople have been killed by #police in their homes in recent years, often by officers responding to the wrong address or using #deadlyForce inappropriately.
"What started as a student encampment at #Columbia University in New York City three weeks ago has now turned into a global #StudentMovement, expanding to Europe, Australia, Canada and beyond. We’ll get the latest from the campus grounds and ask what is next for the global #StudentMovementForGaza."
This morning, police made more arrests at #UCLA. I held a sign saying "support free speech" and "UCLA Faculty". A woman approached me to debate what had happened, and quickly devolved from charging students with antisemitism to the efficacy of vaccines. She was an alumna. I hope our conversation moved her some, but I'm not holding my breath.

New joint statement by members of #UCLA’s history department, compiled from testimony of faculty present at encampment during various periods and in response to last night’s police violence against students. We make 6 explicit calls of the university administration. Read at link below.
Report from UCLA (the day after pro-Israel thugs attacked the Gaza Solidarity Camp while police watched on)
Campus officials have told student protesters to leave their "illegal encampment" or face arrest.
Lines of police are ready to make arrests.
This comes a day after a pro-Israel mob rampaged, attacking students, while police stood by watching. Later, the police let the attackers go without arrests.
More than 200 have signed a letter harshly criticising the administration & making a series of demands, including that the police not be unleased on the student encampment & that no student be disciplined for exercising their right to free speech.
Faculty say if that is not adhered to by the administration, they will consider other measures including work stoppages.

US police use violence to clear peaceful protest at Emory University
Protesters have accused police of excessive force during arrests at an antiwar protest camp at Atlanta’s Emory University, where one female professor was hauled to the ground & detained, & another demonstrator tasered.
TikTok CEO #ShouZiChew has said the company will take the fight against the new law to the courts, but some experts believe that for the #US#SupremeCourt, national security considerations could outweigh #FreeSpeech protection.
The peaceful resolutions are in contrast to the scenes at other universities in the #US where pro-Palestinian protesters have been met with #PoliceViolence. #Israel
