But… I thought she'd already left and gone to ? Even now it's "I'll leave unless you stop being mean, I swear I will". Just leave, FFS.

@hughster She's welcome on Mastodon. We have a very nice open democratic (small D) social media platform right here. Why not give it a try?

One of my favourite things on Twitter was , photographs of beauty in the normal stuff that’s around us and mostly goes unnoticed. People got it and shared brilliant shots of fences and grass and seagulls and hazy views, stuff they see every day and took a moment to appreciate.

I hope it will start up here too.

Follow Climate Scientists on Mastodon

There was a recent thread about scientists leaving twitter and establishing a presence on Mastodon: https://mastodon.online/@mastodonmigration/110424837555301600

Here is a climatelist.csv file of the accounts mentioned in this thread: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uQYbFguzK4syGWIBafwGZjPYtr-IVYwz/view?usp=sharing

You can save this file and import it to Mastodon to follow all of the these accounts.

You can then create a "Climate" list and go through your most recent follows and add them to this list.

Announcing Climate Migration @ClimateMigration

Inspired by the migration of climate scientists this new is dedicated solely to and .

You can follow @ClimateMigration to see select boosted posts, plus scan the "Following" list (https://mastodon.world/@ClimateMigration/following) to find people to follow. The .csv is also made available so you can import and follow the entire list.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@mglo What would be nice is a convenient way of getting a .csv for any account's Following list. Do not know of a way to do this.

2/

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@failedLyndonLaRouchite Those are just the people mentioned in the thread. It is by no means an exhaustive list. You can follow for a much wider sampling of climate science on Mastodon.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@mglo Not exactly sure what you mean here. If you go to someone else's profile, you can click on the "Following" tab below the header and get a list of everyone they are following. You can then look them up and follow them. It is a bit awkward.

Another tool is Followgraph (https://followgraph.vercel.app/) that lets you input an account and then gives you a list of that accounts followers follows, if that makes sense. Again, not exactly what you want.

1/

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@mglo OK, so thought about it and there is another way. Still not very good.

You can 1) build a dummy account and follow just the one person you want to get a list of their "Following" 2) Use Followgraph (https://followgraph.vercel.app/) for the dummy account. 3) Follow everything Followgraph returns 4) Download the Following .csv 5) Upload the .csv to your main account.

So basically it is not very convenient 🤷

@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

So has all the same moderation issues of the rest of the fediverse... but without the benefit of being independent and not-for-profit?

Nor with the "place where everyone is" -ness of the old twitter?

What is the benefit then?
Is it mostly just easier to use?

If it drains more people from twitter making that place more dead good enough.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@jdp23 @mekkaokereke @misc @futurebird Understood that there is a long history and a wide array of issues here. As enumerated in these thorough and foundational documents, we must do better as a community to fight abuse and build inclusivity for everyone, not just a subset. But speaking for everyone here who values the core principles, and hopes to see open people powered social systems live up to their potential, are not just welcome and valued here, but crucial to our collective future.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@jdp23 @mekkaokereke @misc @futurebird Mastodon is built around principles of inclusion, tolerance and safety. It is painful and unacceptable to everyone here committed these principles that have experienced any disrespect or abuse. You are welcome and valued here.

hacks4pancakes, to random

I’m really sorry y’all, but when everyone kept asking me if I was on Bluesky (and I do cross post there) and I said I am but I’m not totally sold over Mastodon the people and their really idealistic techy policies were specifically why I was worried. I’m always willing to try!

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@jerry @hacks4pancakes @XenoPhage
benefits greatly from a proactive marketing and PR campaign generating interest and managing perceptions. The result is that the comparison becomes what Bluesky promises vs. what Mastodon actually does. This is typical of well financed "shiny new thing" campaigns and lasts for a few months until reality bites, at which point either they deliver or disillusionment sets in and becomes the narrative.

Find and Follow Academics on Mastodon

OK, this is wonderful. Sociologist Mark Igra @markigra made this amazing tool for finding and following academics:

Find Academics on Mastodon >>> https://find-masto-folks.vercel.app/

This awesome resource takes data from the authoritative repository:

Academics on Mastodon >>> https://nathanlesage.github.io/academics-on-mastodon/ .

To be listed, use this link to find your discipline >>> https://nathanlesage.github.io/academics-on-mastodon/#curated-account-lists , and fill out the form or contact the list curator.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@gpollara @markigra Seems like your discipline could be easily added. Also, Mark @markigra has placed the source in Github (https://github.com/misea/find-masto-folks), so other enterprising groups can use it to create similar find and follow indexes.

Understood that the the group lists would need to be curated. Actually, this seems like a benefit as it would create trust.

mastodonmigration, (edited )
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@markigra @davidaugust @aleciabatson

Mark, thanks for the links. Did not know of these two. They are great, but honestly the UX is not as clean as yours.

Not asking you to do it, but is there any reason why your tool could not be the basis for a more generalized group finder tool?

Also, as options, could the list be filtered to only show active accounts (eg. posted in the last two weeks)? Sortable by most recent post, number of followers etc. Automatically followed into a list, create list?

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@davidaugust @markigra @aleciabatson

Mark's tool allows you to follow directly from the tool. (Column on the left with the + signs). The question was could it be extended to follow into a list, create a list, perhaps follow all?

The other thought is to be be able to filter the column by different parameters like most recent posts, num follows, etc. ...then maybe follow all filtered results into a list

A guy can dream 🤷

yoyoel, to random

It’s unconscionable that Twitter would deploy what remains of its legal team to bully academics into paying an obscene ransom in order to keep access to essential data. https://inews.co.uk/news/twitter-researchers-delete-data-unless-pay-2364535

The best hope for stopping this is regulatory action, particularly under the DSA.

Groups like the Coalition for Independent Technology Research are helping lobby on behalf of researchers. Learn more and get involved: https://independenttechresearch.org/

mastodonmigration, (edited )
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@yoyoel This is precisely why academics need to get the heck off of Twitter right now, and move in mass to Mastodon, where they actually own their own data.

See this post today on a great tool (https://find-masto-folks.vercel.app/) for finding and following academics on Mastodon: https://mastodon.online/@mastodonmigration/110430771054480878

Just do it now. It is just crazy that anyone would stay on Twitter and continue to place their content at such risk.

Climate Scientists Leave Twitter For Mastodon

So, it is possible for a group to make the collective decision to leave Twitter. Scientists "suffering insults and mass-spam are abandoning Twitter," and setting up shop on Mastodon.

Climate scientists flee Twitter as hostility surges >>> https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20230524-climate-scientists-flee-twitter-as-hostility-surges

This week's theme:

Got someone you'd really like to see join? Well grab 'em by the hand:

  1. help them pick an app

  2. help them pick an instance

  3. have them post an toot, including their special interest tags

  4. tell them about and - cheer them on, boost their toots
