One of the challenges of aging, of being an elder in my tribe of family and peers is seeing and experiencing the deaths of so many old friends and colleagues - which is happening with greater frequency these days. Going to yet another celebration of life on Sunday for a dear old friend. Anne Jones was a spunky, upbeat, joyful earth momma who celebrated her hippie roots. She weathered a stroke ten years ago with grace and determination. But in the end, as it always is, time and age took their toll. RIP Anne, we all loved you so much it hurts.

Catherine Russell, the head of UNICEF, said this week that of the 600,000 children in Rafah, southern Gaza, all of them are either injured, or sick, or malnourished. Much of the Gaza population has been forced south to Rafah by the Israeli military, which had promised them it was a safe zone. She added, “Over 200 days of war have already killed and maimed tens of thousands of children in Gaza.”

A major driver of the current dystopian political and social dysfunction is a complete and utter loss of in just about everything. Folks just don’t trust anyone or anything anymore - or so it seems. We don’t trust corporations to do the right thing in any situation; we don’t trust professional of all stripes to be genuinely concerned about our issues; we don’t trust schools to protect our kids; hospitals to keep us healthy; the police to not brutalize or shoot us; we don’t even trust bishops and priests to keep their hands off of small children. And, of course, we don’t trust government unless one is lucky enough to live in a Scandinavian country (where it appears governments do everything right). Trust is fundamental to societal cohesion, healthy communities, and a sense of wellbeing. It underlies healthy relationships, well functioning families and resilient communities. And rn in the USA, trust is at an all time low. https://www.amacad.org/publication/fifty-years-declining-confidence-increasing-polarization-trust-american-institutions

An older acquaintance of mine died last month, after a long and fruitful life. She was, imo, a ‘saint’ of a human being; so I thought I’d share her loving here for all to see. In my part of Joyce Hailicka was a legend, the queen of Butte Falls, OR - a small rural town nestled in the Cascade Mountains. Joyce was responsible for just about everything good that happened in that town for the decades she lived there with her husband Ron. But she didn’t stop there, no… she spearheaded county, regional and state programs that yielded real results. Her presence and impact were immense and she will be missed.

Look… I’m as furious with Joe Biden’s support for Israeli genocide as any proper progressive leftist. I feel personally betrayed by our current policies. That said, we can work on that and have momentum in our favor. Just look at what’s happening on our college campuses, surely a positive harbinger of things to come. I also understand the existential threat to democracy and all we hold dear that DJ Trump and his remade fascist party represent to us all. There is absolutely no comparison between the two, they are NOT the same. I will hold my nose and VOTE FOR Biden - while continuing to work for a and justice for Israeli . I trust you will do the same.

@AccordionBruce I was a HS and college debater. A member of the Nat’l Forensics League who competed at nat’l tournaments. The beauty of academic debate is that teams are required to take both sides of the issue at tournaments, thus the debates become an exercise in logic, argumentation and rhetoric. One must be as persuasive and convincing on one side as the other to win. Great training for those who would be lawyers, litigators especially. I was one of the few who did not take that path, opting for a diverse career in multiple disciplines.

It’s getting harder and harder not to conclude that humans are an utterly unrepentant parasitic species bent on destroying its host with haste and prejudice. There is no other conclusion possible or plausible at this point in our evolution. Wasn’t always this way, didn’t have to be this way… but regrettably, here we are on the eve of destruction. Can’t say we don’t deserve what we are surely going to get at this juncture, but it makes me sad for my grandchildren and future generations in general. It is they who will pay for this folly.

Fraud is a terrible crime, imo. Purposefully deceiving others for personal gain is abhorrent and disgusting, something sociopaths do… but of all the manifestations of fraud ‘spiritual fraud’ is the worst, preying on seekers whose only desire is to experience a spiritual awakening. Now that is truly despicable. https://www.gurumag.com/inside-the-twinray-cult/
