Sixteen years ago tomorrow I published the first post on the fediverse.

https://web.archive.org/web/20080618164355/http://identi.ca/notice/1

It's still visible on Identi.ca today, although the URL format changed a few years ago, and the redirect plugin stopped working a few years after that.

https://identi.ca/evan/note/Y0QwGyc1QYilqqawkDrQlg

Thanks to everyone who made identi.ca a great place to be, and thanks to everyone who's expanded the fediverse since then.

Thanks especially to people building software, making art, telling their personal stories, inviting friends or organizations, joining groups, making jokes, thinking hard, making connections, liking, reading, listening, watching, administering, moderating, supporting, sharing, being kind, making friends, answering questions, and otherwise laying down the careful and intricate network of connections between people, software and content that is slowly but surely changing the world.

@evan 2 years, 1 month, 4 days. Mastodon was the lifeboat I prepared half a year before jumping ship from The Bad Place.

I like it here a lot. Thank you. 😊🖖🤘

Before us are two very different visions for our country. We can win this election, defeat Trump (again) and protect our freedoms — if we do the work: https://act.indivisible.org/survey/majority_over_maga_signup?source=mastodon&medium=directpost

As warned, Reddit has taken a bundle of money from "Open"AI and will use it to further monetize what you -- and the volunteers who moderate it all -- contributed for free.

It's the norm now, and particularly slimy in this case.

NY Times: After the 2020 election, as some Trump supporters falsely claimed that Biden had stolen the office, many of them displayed a startling symbol outside their homes, on their cars and in online posts: an upside-down American flag. One of the homes flying an inverted flag during that time was the residence of SCOTUS Justice Alito. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/16/us/justice-alito-upside-down-flag.html?unlocked_article_code=1.sU0.dA3q.762sBv-t9c_6&smid=url-share

So now SpaceX, with no working spacesuit, and years behind on it's multi-billion dollar moon lander, is lobbying NASA to go to the Hubble Space Telescope.

"A successful private mission could improve Hubble's ability to point at celestial objects and, by boosting its orbit, extend its life by years... however, an accident could leave the multibillion-dollar telescope broken — or, even more tragically, tethered to the dead bodies of the astronauts sent to repair it."

Starlink is killing Hubble

Something about this plan to move Hubble, didn't make sense. If the space telescope still has 10 years of useful life, why this risky SpaceX mission to boost it's orbit now?

Well it turns out the main thing threatening the utility of Hubble is... wait for it... SpaceX Starlink satellites, which orbit just above Hubble constantly "photo-bombing" the images. Within a few years there will be so many Starlinks that Hubble will be useless.

I don’t really use Twitter anymore, I have a burner that I just use for sports and weather and news and never post from. But every time I open it, I have to question my sanity.
I just read an article about how there is an ice cream that is designed to, and I am not making this up, “taste like your grandma”
I subsequently read another article about how the New York Knicks won an NBA playoff game because someone let out “an epic fart”
These are real things. You can look them up.
Are people just getting more insane? Should I double up on my meds?

The downside of #Mastodon is if you don't follow anyone you get no content.

I "solved" the problem by overfollowing, I just follow with abandon. Then lists for posters I don't want to miss in the massive firehose I created.

#Twitter?

Twitter has an algorithm for what is delivered to your eyeballs.

And that algorithm is in the hands of a #manchild #plutocrat #bigot.

You get what he serves and you like it or you suffer.

Fuck Twitter. Fuck all legacy #centralized #socialmedia.

"Charges"? I might have used the verb "claims".

Don't really see how this is the gotcha moment they are claiming, and pretty simple to explain on redirect. It seems very possible that Cohen could have also spoken to Trump about the Stormy matter during the minute thirty interaction. Something like, "Let me talk to the boss" Hands phone to Trump. "Boss, we need to pay Stormy." "Yes, yes, pay her" And hands phone back to Schiller.
