Today was a huge milestone in our quest to federate and tear down the walls around our own walled garden.

First, we launched a new version of Flipboard for iOS and Android which brings the promise of two way federation to life. Now when a federated Flipboard user curates, people in the fediverse can reply, favorite, boost or follow those Flipboard users who will in turn see that activity in their usual notifications tab. Even better, Flipboard users can directly reply to people in the fediverse -- and very soon they will also be able to follow each other.

Second, we federated some of our best curators today who are actively curating more than 10,000 magazines about everything from climate change to kale smoothie recipes. I'm grateful to our many curators and the service they provide to so many others who want to find the best content about a shared interest. I know our curators are excited to have millions more people who could potentially benefit from their curation. I also know that people in the fediverse will give a warm welcome to these curators. Especially now that everyone can hear and talk to each other over what was once two totally separate networks but now increasingly are in one and the same .

Who else hates it when PC games force you to use a gamepad?

@atomicpoet Even worse is when any video game requires you to create an account first.

On a post that has absolutely NOTHING to do with this, two people have been arguing in my comments for three days about whether spreadsheets are databases. The thread is now almost 50 comments.

@cfiesler hah. People used to use Lotus 1.2.3 as a word processor. “That letter I wrote is at AA 55”

@bkim @cfiesler not really :-)

So much energy going into AI chatbots. I'm curious what you think. Do you find AI chatbots useful? Are they useful enough that you are willing to pay to use them? Or do you think they are over hyped and not useful to you at all?

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@toolbear Fair enough. I'm just personally curious what people think about this. I don't see a lot of usefulness to AI chatbots but maybe I'm missing something...

@toolbear hah!

I swear, we are still talking about this platform stuff all wrong. There is absolutely no comparison between my mastodon engagements and those anywhere else. People here are just far more interested in engaging people and ideas than any other site where the biggest activity seems to be following celebrity accounts and popular influencers discussing very little. It’s a completely different kind of experience.

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@MissTakenLee @shoq well said Shoq. So true. I learn so much from the conversations here.

Welcome to the fediverse MissTakenLee!

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@shoq @MissTakenLee Totally. The people are the point. The tech needs to be in service to the community rather than the other way around. I think this is what Elon and others often fail to understand.

Hypothetically speaking, if wins the next presidential elections, would his team use and so the to make his political tweets but on the fediverse?

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@lumaa that could happen. But Trump would likely be treated the same way as other toxic people in the fediverse. I.e. Lots of people would block his account and many instance owners would likely block the account as well because his posts violate most instance’s ground rules.

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@eatyourglory @lumaa you could block any account yourself at anytime. Your instance owner could also make their own decision but I suspect most instances would almost instantly block trump given his proven toxicity and threats. For example I can assure you that we would block trump on Flipboard.social even if he became potus again.

Exactly what @Gargron says!

Governments should not rely on Threads for connecting to the Fediverse. It would be far better for them to run on their own servers. Ideally, I’d prefer to follow @potus (which doesn’t exist right now) than @potus.

But last week, Joe Biden was not on the Fediverse. Now he is. This is a huge win and will result in further migration here.

This is neither ideal nor perfect – but it’s better than it was last week.

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@atomicpoet @Gargron exactly. I think the future for both governments and organizations is running an instance, similar to running a website. It’s already started to happen in the EU. These will soon be followable in Threads as well as any other activitypub app. We need products and services for making this more manageable. I.e. we need something like Wordpress or Squarespace for the so orgs can readily build and manage instances on the social web.

Yesterday morning I was flipping through my Mastodon timeline via Flipboard and I saw a post from @gtconway3.

@tchambers had boosted George's post using whatever app Tim likes to use to these days (I suspect @phanpy though it could just as easily have been the native Mastodon app, @mammoth, @ivory, or @IceCubesApp)

I tapped on George's profile and saw he was posting from . I tapped the follow button and now I see his latest posts in Mastodon and Flipboard.

There's a whole new array of apps, people and posts in the fediverse and it all just works. It's wonderful.

FTW.

Hi! I used Mastodon a bit in 2016, but haven't been back since. Decided to give it a try again! My name is Bea (pronounced bee) and I'm a student of Anthropology (BA) and Urban Planning (MUP) in southern California. I'm interested in urban spaces, cityscapes, and applying anthropological concepts and insights to urban planning and development. I <3 walkable cities, accessible transportation, and innovative and affordable housing!

I'm surprised at how few retail websites have implemented Apple Pay for checkout. It's a pleasure to use a site that implements this and when they do I'm happy to buy directly from them instead of through Amazon. Sites that make you manually enter all your shipping and credit card information while navigating thru last minute check out popups is a big reason why it's so much more convenient to buy the same thing thru amazon.

There are a lot of things we can do to improve the web and make it more resilient to big tech. Optimizing web sites for rapid checkout with modern Apple and Google pay mechanics is one of them.

Edit: Some of you correctly point out that this is actually just trading reliance on one big tech entity for another. I agree and would love to see a better approach for convenient online payments but that future seems very far off. Ironically, Apple and Google Pay can help smaller merchants level the playing field with Amazon today while we await a better payment future.

@janettespeyer It will be similar to having two email addresses. Initially this will be a bit awkward but overtime apps will accommodate having multiple accounts on multiple services in the fediverse. I think it will be somewhat similar to how email works today where you can see email in each inbox or combined together into a single inbox.

FediForum 2024 is almost here! Flipboard CEO @mike catches up with conference co-organizer and Dazzle Labs CEO @J12t to get a taste of top-of-mind topics for fediverse stewards, including how this space can cross the chasm into the mainstream. It’s a new episode of Dot Social, the first podcast about the open social web.
