Well, I got my first white supremacist reply from the fediverse after posting an article about Elon from Flipboard.

I reported and blocked the account. I also looked at the instance admin's account and it's clear he's also a white supremacist. So that instance will be blocked on flipboard.com and flipboard.social as well as shared with other instance admins as a problematic instance for them to take action if they also deem appropriate. Took all of 2 minutes to help make the fediverse a bit better for everyone.

And the best thing is that anyone in the fediverse can do this too. Decentralized moderation FTW.

Just discovered that the Amiga 500 Mini exists.

Unfortunately, it costs C$200 – which is too rich for my blood.

But this is something I actually would like to check out some day because I missed out on the Amiga.

@atomicpoet So cool. I remember wanting a Commodore Vic 20 but my parents decided to buy me the TI 99/4a instead because that's what we had in our high school. I ended up writing a game for it called Night Mission: https://www.pixelpedant.com/items/show/247

Now there's an emulator written for the TI 99/4A in Javascript. It's amazing. http://js99er.net

Some personal news: I'm now a contributor at @wedistributemedia! I'm so excited to work with the team over there reporting everything happening in the world of distributed social media.

For my first post, I wrote about @ghost joining the Fediverse 🙏🏼

What's exciting about this is that it isn't just an ActivityPub plugin - it's a top-down re-thinking about what Ghost is as a service. This is ActivityPub for publishers done right.

Congrats to @johnonolan and team! cc Fediverse Threads

The problem with building a closed social network is that it sets up an all or nothing premise for users. They might like some of the signature features but they'll leave if there's not enough people to network with. That's a shame and a huge barrier to innovation and new social products.

The changes that forever. People can now use the features they like from a mix of apps across a common network of people. This means we can take a whole new approach to how "social" and "media" should work including discovery, user experience and monetization that will be far healthier than anything we've had in the past.

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@mpesce Good question. A bunch of people are working on that including @evan, @tchambers and @J12t. Making easier to implement within iOS and Android apps could enable the kind of Cambrian explosion you're talking about.

Today was a huge milestone in our quest to federate and tear down the walls around our own walled garden.

First, we launched a new version of Flipboard for iOS and Android which brings the promise of two way federation to life. Now when a federated Flipboard user curates, people in the fediverse can reply, favorite, boost or follow those Flipboard users who will in turn see that activity in their usual notifications tab. Even better, Flipboard users can directly reply to people in the fediverse -- and very soon they will also be able to follow each other.

Second, we federated some of our best curators today who are actively curating more than 10,000 magazines about everything from climate change to kale smoothie recipes. I'm grateful to our many curators and the service they provide to so many others who want to find the best content about a shared interest. I know our curators are excited to have millions more people who could potentially benefit from their curation. I also know that people in the fediverse will give a warm welcome to these curators. Especially now that everyone can hear and talk to each other over what was once two totally separate networks but now increasingly are in one and the same .

@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@bart Thanks Bart! I always recommend Mammoth to people who want to see what their newly federated account looks like in Mastodon. You guys have done a great job.

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@dansup Thanks Dan! Next up is finishing our integration such that all Flipboard users can follow anyone on Pixelfed. I can't wait to feature your best users to ours.

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@sordid I personally think it's incredibly important for the future of the fediverse/social web to be truly open by default. This means not building walls for fear or profit.

I know this is a bit controversial but I think we should be more focused on tearing down walls rather than building new ones. And I think this principle should be upheld for Threads given that @potus and many others are federating from there as we speak. This is a huge win for the open social web.

Having said that, we will certainly have to continually reinforce protections and moderation in the fediverse because there will be plenty of bad actors and users. Just like any other thriving social network, there will be lots of threat vectors that we will need to address as we grow.

Fortunately I think there are a number of smart, surgical ways of doing this without having to wall off 200 million users from the fediverse, most of whom are well intentioned and will be a hugely positive addition to the vision so many here have been working toward for years.

A thread on some tenets regarding open systems I feel compelled to relay:

  • It’s extremely hard for open to ever compete with closed. It almost never succeeds.

  • Every now and then open is given a chance due to unprecedented external events or pressures.

  • In the rare event that open gains momentum, any actor can adopt it. That’s the point.

  • The actors who adopt open will inevitably range from good to indifferent to bad.

1/

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar
  • If those who have been working on open revert to closed in the name of preventing bad actors, closed will win.

  • If open wins we get things like the web. Imperfect but far greater for humanity than most everyone being online via AOL.

  • We’re at a precious moment in time for the fediverse. When it comes to social media, open has a real chance right now. And closed is on the ropes. Let’s not blow it.

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@mastodonmigration I think there are some important actions to take in the coming months to prepare for the federation with threads. Has anyone made a list of key things we should focus on to protect people in the fediverse? For example @evan talked recently about the importance of being able to delete replies from a thread you started. I think people should also be able to opt out of quote posts as another example. Is there a group of people already talking about this?

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar
  • There need to be mechanisms to prevent the bad actors from screwing things up, to reward the good actors, and to educate the indifferent so they appreciate their new found openness.

  • Most people outside the tech industry don’t understand open and aren’t motivated to switch to something just because it’s open.

  • If open looks and feels the same as closed, closed will win.

  • If open is more confusing than closed, closed will win.

I think that fully integrating into Flipboard's backend is going to be one of the best things we've done since we started the company.

There are three phases:

Phase 1 (Today): Federate 25 accounts to test and learn

Phase 2 (January): Enable anyone in the Fediverse to engage with any public curator on Flipboard

Phase 3 (April): Enable anyone on Flipboard to follow and engage with any public account in the

Are there any RSS Readers that are trying to integrate ActivityPub too? Pondering the glut of email newsletters in our inboxes these days, and wondering if we are due for an RSS Reader renaissance, except with a fediverse twist this time…

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@ricmac Flipboard does a reasonable job at RSS today but we are strengthening our RSS support significantly as we integrate ActivityPub.

I think RSS and ActivityPub are like peanut butter and chocolate and it will be awesome when they are combined.

mike, to fediverse
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

The network effect for is gaining some serious momentum right now. As more services adopt the protocol, more people, more communities and more content are added to the network making it increasingly more valuable for everyone. This will only accelerate in the coming months as Threads, Wordpress, Tumblr, Flipboard and others federate.

We're still in early innings but there's no way to put this genie back in the bottle. The open social Web / the is going to be huge.

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@kajkandler This is a really good question because ActivityPub is similar to RSS with two really important differences. 1) ActivityPub is two way. While RSS broadcasts content it does not have a way to know if someone liked, boosted or commented on that content. 2) RSS forms a connection between a blog and an RSS app. ActivityPub forms a follow connection between an account and another account. This means if you move from one reader app to another the connection is maintained.

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@NatureMC @albertcardona On one hand, that's the beauty of the . People are free to federate or de-federate based on what they value and the kind of communities they want to participate in.

I would just caution that automatically walling entire groups of people off from each other out of fear could be self defeating for the Fediverse. There are many tools that can be used to prevent bad actors and bad behavior when it's seen. And more can be built to effectively federate moderation.
