Venture capitalists have dreamed up new schemes to cash out of the "AI" companies they've funded. A lot of people are going to lose a lot of money before this is over -- but the VCs are working hard to ensure it won't be them.

I've been using the Chromium browser for certain websites, and that's about to end.

Google's greed-fueled moves -- this time to disable vital extensions that provide better privacy and security -- are unacceptable to me.

The stakes here are quite high. If Google succeeds what it's attempting to do -- forcing us to use only Google-approved privacy and security choices -- we're in trouble.

Firefox looks like the best way forward at this point.

It's important not to accidently write the sentence in this form: "Trump is appealing."

Emily Baden says after a disagreement over political lawn signs with the US supreme court justice’s wife, a black car began parking at her mother’s home

Signal strongly opposes the newest proposal in Europe.

Let there be no doubt: we will leave the EU market rather than undermine our privacy guarantees.

This proposal--if passed and enforced against us--would require us to make this choice.

It's surveillance wine in safety bottles.

Maine Sen. Susan Collins isn't just the key Republican enabler of Trump's extremist Supreme Court appointments -- a pretend-centrist who is just as right-wing as the rest of the Republican Party.

She's a Trump flunky in just about every way at this point, as her flagrant lie about the NY prosecutor shows. https://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/collins-needs-to-retract-and-apologize-for-her-falsehood?utm_source=brevo&utm_campaign=Backchannel%20NEW%20TEMPLATE%20329&utm_medium=email

An insider at NBC's Trump "Apprentice" TV program explains, in detail, what a con game it all was -- and, almost parenthetically, notes one of Trump's more blatantly racist acts.

If the people involved in this had not been accomplices in the scam for so long, the public might have known a lot more about Trump's vile character when it mattered.

My dear friend's husband Jeigh Tea passed away very abruptly yesterday, a vibrant, beautiful, and sharp witted person who made my life better for knowing him. In honor of him and to help his family in a really trying time, if you can help, I offer a way:

I'm over my temper tantrum.

Unfortunately I was enjoying a lovely break on the beach, logged into Mastodon and saw some ugly.

I have been promising myself to start moving away from commenting on what is happening in the moment and talk about more general legal issues. It invites less anger and hate.

Like everyone else, I'm relieved that it wasn't a hung jury or acquittal.

I have no doubt there will be an appeal because there are appealable issues.

But appealable does not mean winable.

Judges have a lot of discretion, so the standards for reversal on appeal are high hurdles for the defendant.

Only in the rarest of cases (not applicable here) would a jury's factual findings be questioned. Juries are the final arbiters of facts.

As always I am making no predictions about outcome. I am observing that if you hear "this is an appealable issue" keep in mind a large gap between "appealable" and "winable."

The entire journalism industry adopted the "hush money trial" framing, thereby downplaying Trump's corruption -- financial fraud aimed at tampering with an election -- to something that the Trump cult has used to convince itself that it could all be discounted.

“I did not find the case trivial. I found it nauseating, a grouping of some of the least attractive and sleaziest human beings I have ever imagined in proximity to the levers of power. And critically, these were people actively and consciously engaged in an effort to corrupt an election. I came away from the trial thinking it was actually important that Trump had to answer for this conduct.”

Meta and Google are waging all-out war on the open web. Google, it turns out, may be the biggest threat.

Both companies should be broken up via antitrust enforcement. But governments are moving far too slowly, if at all.

The danger is growing rapidly, and journalism is -- with a few notable exceptions, such as the @verge -- nearly clueless. It's scary.

As usual, Josh Marshall carves to the heart of the Alito corruption: "At this point the scandal is less his conflicts or his lying or even his apparent support for the insurrection. It’s the confident imperviousness to any accountability in itself."

https://www.thenation.com/article/society/alito-flag-washington-post/

Meanwhile, the chief "justice" of the court reinforced that contempt for accountability by saying he would do nothing about Alito's (or Thomas') corruption.

Also as usual, the Democrats hide, whimpering, in the corner.

Journalism keeps looking for a daddy. Exhibit 45,993: the Atlantic's stupid deal with "Open"AI. https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2024/05/a-devils-bargain-with-openai/678537/

You would imagine that at some point journalists would realize that they have to create and promote their own platforms, but you would be foolishly naive to do so. Sad to say.

The Society of Professional Journalists has a long ethics code, which is followed to one degree or another by journalism outlets.

How does "Open"AI fare on these guidelines? A journalist asked, and the answers were illuminating:
