Random: as someone who existed during the 80s, "Stranger Things", wood paneling and cigarette smoke is a lot closer to the aesthetic than the weird neon artifacts you see out there.

mwop,
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

@sekka Neon was the aspiration, the dream of modernity; wood paneling and cigarette smoke were the reality.

When you receive my replies to the internals mailing list, do they look empty to you? I just noticed that my messages on both news.php.net and externals.io appear empty.

@derickr @ramsey That's neither helpful nor constructive, Derick. The mail clients you tend to prefer are frankly an anachronism today, not the norm. Don't gatekeep folks who are using different clients, particularly ones that are part of their OS or on mobile, please.

bertrand, to php

Hey Mastodon, what's a free hosting plan for a server-side Web app + DB you'd recommend? Should I pursue with good old and or is there something more modern? I have a small doodling idea for this three days week-end and maybe I should also learn a new language?

mwop,
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

@bertrand I wouldn't say is not modern; the language changes starting in 7.2 and forward have positioned it well, particularly regarding the type system improvements.

As for free hosting... I tend to stay away from it. If a security issue occurs, free means you're most likely vulnerable. DO droplets are pretty affordable.

People who have had braces: does it hurt getting them taken off or after? My baby’s getting theirs off today and I never had braces as a kid, so I’m trying to figure out how best to take care of them

@ian Honestly... I can't even really remember. Which tells me it can't have been too traumatic.

Thanks to @shivammathur, I can now (easily) use @derickr's bytecode disassembler on macOS:

mwop,
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

@derickr @sebastian @shivammathur You can laugh all you want, but the long tail of migrations is a thing, and it's larger than you likely want it. I'd rather that applications on those versions can continue to be tested, as that's the best way to ensure you can migrate eventually.

For years, I have used syntax highlighting for code examples in my presentation material.

Not once did I get the feedback that the syntax-highlighted code was hard to read. But now I read once or twice that using syntax highlighting for code examples in presentations is considered a bad practice.

Question to the experts of the : Should I avoid syntax highlighting for code examples in my presentations? If not, do you have recommendations for color palettes?

Thanks!

mwop,
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

@s_bergmann I prefer syntax highlighting in examples as it helps provide context. Use something with high contrast, though, for folks with color blindness or issues differentiating colors with similar value. (I have gravitated to Solarized palettes for this reason.)

Today, we said goodbye to our good friend and the best dog we’ve ever had, Charlie Brown. He fought a long battle with cancer, and finally, it was too much pain for him to continue.

Now, he’s gone. No one else in the world will know the love and loyalty Charlie gave us. That was for us alone. We will never forget him.

I just discovered that the Zend Yellow Pages (aka Zend Certified Engineer Directory) are gone 😞

Luckily I still have my original certificates with me 😌

Florian Engelhardt has successfully passed the Zend PHP Certification Exam on the 16th of February 2007

mwop,
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

@flowcontrol Just as an FYI: you can request copies of your certificate and verification still from @zend . There was an email that went out last year when we shut it down. It (the yellow pages) was mostly being used for spam, unfortunately.

Look for more news on the cert front later this year...

I feel like I’m living in 1933 Germany.

Calling certain individuals “not people”? Threatening to round up a huge group in camps? Promising to weaponize government to go after adversaries? Threatening the rights of citizens just because you don’t like them?

Tell me I’m overreacting. Please. I want to be overreacting.

Had a literal coding shower moment this morning. A problem I ran into a couple weeks ago that I set aside because I couldn't identify a root cause. And for some reason, I started thinking on it as I stepped into the shower, and realized that everything I'd observed was consistent with resource depletion due to recursion.

Once I got to my computer, I tested my theory, and BINGO! that's what it was.

Time and space, folks: time and space make all problems shallow.

mwop, to discworld
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

I came to Terry Pratchett via Good Omens, and then went on to read Thud! which was just out in paperback. I continued to devour Discworld, and eagerly awaited each new book. The Shepherd's Crown made me weep when I read it, knowing it was the last.

The past two years and more, I've read to my wife every night, and we've been making our way through Discworld together. We laugh, we weep, we clutch each other in suspense. We're treated to a world we wish was ours.
