This piece is arguing that impacts climate because its harms the "fragile fabric of international cooperation" & makes collective action on climate more difficult due to divisions

This is essentially the same argument used to downplay the , b/c bringing too much attention to it creates divisions & harms the potential for climate cooperation as it pushes away from negotiation

Why is the and the parliament elections two of the "top 10 highlights" on Japan's 2024 calendar?

Putting the EU election above and 's elections - two major markets for Japanese energy investments & raw materials imports - in terms of importance is ridiculous.

Another sign of just the climate space in Japan is very (overly) western centric.

    As far as I can tell, he wasn't overly political. Was his crime working for a foreign university?

    I fear anytime a friend, journalist, or students, goes home. You never know what might trigger an exit ban, or worse.

    I got one funded grant last year, and honestly, I felt that they were more concerned about us going the paperwork and documentation properly than our actual reporting project.

    @giocomai it also could be seen, particularly in the global south, as a bit colonial. Of the 4 grants I got in the past 1-2 years, they had the most paperwork/reporting rules and did little to promote or showcase our project, even though we won an award and were shortlisted for another. Once we filed the final paperwork, they no longer cared about us.

    Saw a journalist post calling on fellow #journalists and readers not to pay or read articles by an outlet run by an #Islamophobe.

    While it was a good point, they did this, of course, on #Twitter, a platform also owned and run by a racist who, btw, regularly demeans #SaveJournalism and platforms fascists and, yes, Islamaphobes.

    Sigh.

    China is siding with 's right in opposing the new due diligence regulations, which shouldn't be a surprise, as they are natural allies.

    If (and its a big if) the law is enforced properly, could have a severe impact on Chinese exports to Europe, including, hopefully, finally dealing with forced labor in and supply chains.

    With flip-flopping on , now working for , it should be obvious that the idea of him being "anti-" is nothing more than a facade.

    It makes perfect sense. 's biggest support is , and pro- rhetoric is part of far-right disinformation. It's a short step from pro-Russia to pro-China.

    The only way to hold (& others) accountable is via strong, consistent, human rights-centric, foreign (& economic) policy, not empty populist rhetoric.
