Cities’ power to take concrete #climateaction, as well as to put pressure on national governments in order they act as true #climate leaders is essential to build an equitable #fossilfuel free future. #climatechange
Canada’s Big Five banks are still infiltrated by fossil fuel directors
🧵 1/?
"Canada’s largest banks are deeply entrenched in fossil fuels, having pumped at least $1.2 trillion into the sector since the Paris Agreement was signed in late 2015. But it’s not just their investments and lending that are increasingly under scrutiny –– it’s their leadership, too."

"Every Awful Thing Trump Has Promised to Do in a Second Term
The former president has pushed a slew of terrifying proposals, both publicly and privately, that he plans to unleash on America should he take down Biden"
"The legislation would create a 25-year dedicated fund of $3 billion annually, financed by big #FossilFuel corporations, with one-third of the funds reserved specifically for disadvantaged communities disproportionately impacted by the #climate crisis.
The vote comes one week after the Senate passed the Climate Change Superfund Act by a vote of 43-17. The bill now heads to the Ways & Means Committee."
Microsoft helps big oil n gas get it out of the ground.
“My resignation was driven in part by the realization that the tech industry, including #Microsoft, is increasing the profitability and competitiveness of these #FossilFuel giants and perpetuating their existence when they should be phased out,” Alpine told Grist. “It became apparent after years of internal efforts … that Microsoft was unwilling to enact meaningful change.”
He’s put all his energy into culture wars, not paying doctors and nurses, letting schools crumble and ensuring the #FossilFuel industry can endanger civilisation for decades to come by granting new drilling licenses.
He takes security so ‘seriously’ he appointed Shapps to Defence and ennobled Cameron.
#Norway taxes its #fossilfuel industry and offers free #university degrees to students, while #Australia subsidises fossil fuel expansion and imposes high costs on university education for its youth. Budget allocations reflect choices and priorities, revealing significant differences between the two nations.
Is the government taking more from students through #HECS than it collects from the #Petroleum#Resources Rent Tax? #prrt#auspol
If you got upset at me for pointing out that more people died of Covid under Biden than Trump, in large part because Biden rolled back common sense restrictions that were in place under Trump...
Then you'll hate me pointing out that Trump introduced a 25% tariff on Chinese EVs, and Biden is upping that to 100% tariff.
non-existent labor protections, & no real labor unions in Chinese factories = cheap workforce.
worst sourcing standards for raw materials = using cheap minerals from regions with #humanrights & #environmental abuses (see recent Lead The Charge rankings)
A report on the global power system has found that the world may be on the brink of driving down #FossilFuel generation, even as overall demand for #electricity continues to rise. #SolarPower was the main supplier of electricity growth, according to Ember, adding more than twice as much new electricity generation as coal in 2023.
Another thing that should be on this list (I did say it was non-comprehensive) is #indigenous rights & title; you can expect a #Poilievre led Conservative government to steamroll over indigenous sovereignty as this has been a long-standing thorn-in-the-side to the #FossilFuel and other resource-extraction industries that bankroll them.
Niger’s military government sides with Russia in the latest sign of Moscow’s growing influence in Africa. Armed troops in Niger overthrew the government in July 2023, seizing power for themselves. The following months were rife with speculation that the military government would align with Moscow and possibly form ties with...
Shareholders have rejected Woodside Energy's climate plan, marking a symbolic victory for activists who have called for Australia's 🇦🇺 biggest #gas producer to stop new #FossilFuel projects https://buff.ly/44d20KY
"The production of plastic, which is made from #FossilFuels, is greenhouse gas-intensive.
By the middle of the century, global #emissions from #plastic production could triple to account for one-fifth of the Earth’s remaining carbon budget, an analysis has found.
The report was released before the 4th Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC4) meeting for a global plastics treaty set to start next week in Ottawa, Canada."
"We’re in the midst of an energy transition. Renewable power and electric vehicles are getting cheaper, the grid is getting greener, and oil and gas companies are getting nervous.
That’s why the #FossilFuel giants are looking towards petrochemicals, and plastics in particular, as their next major growth market."
And of course:
"fossil fuel and petrochemical companies are relying on emerging economies in Asia and Africa to drive growth."
The simplest argument against funding new #oil, #gas & #coal projects is not that they’re immoral. It’s that they’re unsound. For investors & shareholders, funding new #FossilFuel projects is a risky bet https://buff.ly/3Jt5H5y
There are people saying that it's not up to an individual to reduce their #FossilFuel use because it's a society problem. But, that's misleading
For a real world example. In cities such as copenhagen, 62% of inhabitants trips to work or school are by bicycle.
For this to happen, for the bike lanes, etc, to be constructed. For the experience of bicycling in a city to be safe & convenient, the majority of inhabitants have to want it
It doesn't take a government to enforce bicycling!
Big Oil and its allies are attacking the International Energy Agency for forecasting a relatively imminent peak in fossil-fuel demand and the rapid uptake of #renewables
The fossil fuel industry is shooting the messenger, because the message contains the words "stranded assets".
If the banks hear that message, that industry is DONE.
"The 15th annual Banking on Climate Chaos (BOCC) report looked at how the top 60 #banks in the world are underwriting and lending to over 4,200 #FossilFuel firms.
Since the Paris Agreement to limit global warming was signed in 2016, these banks have financed fossil fuels with $6.9 trillion (€6.4 trillion). The report says $3.3 trillion (€3 trillion) - almost half of this amount - went towards fossil fuel expansion alone."
