Software guy turned lawyer, but please don't hold it against me.

SFBA team member.

I like: #SFBA, #SFF, #burritos, #patents (and #BurritoPatents), #IPlaw, #LawFedi, #FLOSS, the #indieweb, playing #RPGs, and outdated internet technology.

Speaking only for myself. Endorsements will be enthusiastically boosted.

Hive mind. I am looking for a very special piece of computing history as a possible centrepiece for an upcoming video.
What’s the oldest serviceable computer you have that can run at least Linux kernel 2.6 and can I borrow it for a month?

neuralgraffiti,
@neuralgraffiti@sfba.social avatar

@ironicbadger I have a circa 2003 laptop that probably has a very early 2.6 kernel on it. If that’s of interest, I can see if it still boots.

@luis_in_brief Being the That Tech Guy can be a lonely row to hoe. Plus, if you're like me, your father-in-law has a lot of questions about why his computer is running slow all of a sudden.

I am often skeptical of in-kind donations from Giant Software Companies to open source, rather than cash, but this one seems like a genuinely good fit of service provider and community need.

Sorry to threadjack, but do you have counsel who specialize in nonprofits that you'd recommend? I've been looking for a referral without much luck.

neuralgraffiti,
@neuralgraffiti@sfba.social avatar

@luis_in_brief That's right, for SFBA. I did get one referral (who was skeptical that there was a route to 501(c)(3)), but it was cost-prohibitive.

@evan I think locale-based instances have a lot to offer. And online community tied to civic/geographic affinity is our goal with SFBA.social.

Regarding the concerns raised about Overdrive/Libby and privacy/data sharing...

I contacted SFPL and received a reply which suggests there may not be an issue, or as much of an issue, as it at first appeared.

The response I received follows

neuralgraffiti,
@neuralgraffiti@sfba.social avatar

@divya @nwchapman FWIW, I independently looked at the Overdrive privacy policy and SFPL’s response looks pretty accurate to me. I asked @/longobord what concerned her, since she didn’t say in the post but didn’t hear back (although I expect her mentions are blowing up).

Overdrive explicitly states that “Your lending history is protected by OverDrive as confidential. It is not shared with any third parties, except to staff with appropriate authority acting within the scope of their duties for the administration of your institution (library, school, etc.)”

And while Overdrive could be violating their privacy policy, that’s inviting FTC and other regulatory action, including pretty big fines in California. I wouldn’t assume that’s happening without some indication that it’s going on.

Curious about moderator workload in the fediverse? Here's a couple data points:

In putting together our end-of-year report for Open Collective, I took a quick look at how much trash we had to take out this year for sfba.social.

Our mod team rejected 680 spam signups and suspended about 2700 accounts† in 2023. That's almost 10% of our total user base!

† I didn't do any rigorous categorization of reasons for suspending accounts, but most suspended accounts are spam/scams/bots. I think we tend to limit accounts and delete posts for other kinds of infractions, and we we've been lucky not to see too much truly awful stuff.

Hello , I'm looking for a cargo recommendation for tall people. I'm 6'5" and, if it matters, close enough to 250 lbs.

We have a Tern GSD in the family, and, while they say it's good for my height, I find it a bit awkward.

Boosts for reach are cool.
