TIL: so, wifi has these regulatory domains right, where if you don't tell your radio what country it's in, it doesn't know where it's allowed to transmit and effectively locks out all channels above 2.4GHz.

So I went to see how my chipset was configured... And somehow, it knew that it was in Canada and configured itself appropriately, despite me not telling it and there not being any OS-level service that would have done funky geolocation things.

Turns out, it's the access point!

nogweii,
@nogweii@nogweii.net avatar

@danderson that's really cool! Well thought out design (minus the bugs that inevitability arise when humans and/or computers are involved) that avoids a common misconfiguration. (Not me forgetting to set that flag for months after buying a new laptop, circa 2015, nope...)

The only way to evaluate an LLM continues to be on its vibes

The vibes of Claude 3 Opus are looking /really/ good right now: people whose opinion I trust are treating it as a step up from GPT-4!

I've not spent enough time with it yet, but my impressions so far have been very positive

nogweii,
@nogweii@nogweii.net avatar

@simon it seems like none of these are self-hostable. I wonder how long it'll take to get that type of LLM running locally, and just how much compute will be needed.

Here's a link https://台北.台灣/

Does your Mastodon client show the name of the link with Chinese characters or as "xn--djrpt…"?

@Edent Tusky on Android. (14, GrapheneOS on Pixel 6 Pro) shows Chinese characters.

Of all of the malicious bots I deal with, by far the biggest nuisance is TikTok's bot, ByteSpider.

It does not obey robots.txt, it has by far the highest request rate of any crawler we see, appears biased towards the most expensive routes, and its traffic comes from thousands of IPs spread throughout the IPv4 address space in a manner that cannot be easily blocked.

If it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck...

nogweii,
@nogweii@nogweii.net avatar

@drewdevault 100% agreed; there are definitive changes to the types of automated crap that gets thrown around as geopolitical events happen.

I'm just some random sysadmin, I'm not part of this conflict, yet suddenly I'm getting a huge increase in traffic from IP in a new conflict zone? 🤔

I'm very excited to see @atuin in action! I've got a custom integration with my zsh config (see https://code.aether.earth/nogweii/dotfiles/-/blob/main/zsh/88_use_atuin.zsh ) and I finished setting up the server to run in my kubernetes cluster (see https://code.aether.earth/ops/k8s/tanka-world/-/blob/main/environments/default/atuin.libsonnet )!

So far, so good. Now to get it installed onto all of my computers...

Does anyone know of a modern #Android phone which allows call recording without root?

I'm currently on an aging 5T running #LineageOS and can record calls just fine - a button in the dialler lets me record straight from the line. I don't need to put it on speaker and record via the microphone.

(Looking for 1st hand experience, not search results. No need to reply to discuss the legality of call recording. I need root-less for online banking etc.)

nogweii,
@nogweii@nogweii.net avatar

@Edent @parmaene some work, but fewer and fewer. I run GrapheneOS on a Pixel 6 Pro, and my bank app stopped working a few months ago. 😑

(It stopped once before like ~1.5 yes ago but started working again a week later so I was hopeful... But appears as if no luck.)

🇺🇸 if that matters.

    Yeah, that is what happens when you steal content from everyone without giving credit or paying for it. Now, everyone is banning your AI bot from accessing their data. Not to mention, the company overhyped its products and is currently dealing with multiple lawsuits for stealing data for training AI.

    that pigz, the parallel implementation of the gzip compression tool, doesn't support parallel decompression. It compresses really fast by doing it in parallel, but the reverse is still single-core. 😟

    Is there any XMPP<->Telephony Network transport other than JMP/Soprani.ca that allows me to make calls with Conversations (or any other modern Jingle client)

    Soprani.ca seems like a pretty convoluted stack to set up if one wanted to self host.

    TBH I don’t even know enough about the problem space to formulate what I’m looking for.
    I think I already have a SIP account (comes with my internet at home / but never used it) so I guess I’m just looking for a 'modern Jingle'<->SIP gateway?

    nogweii,
    @nogweii@nogweii.net avatar

    @daniel I recall seeing a project long ago (hosted on Sourceforge IIRC) that did bridge SIP to XMPP, may have been based on libpurple. Only did text though, which is not helpful.

    It does lead me to hope that it's something people have tried over the years.

    If so, is there a tutorial you know (or had written 😅) that guides someone through the setup?
