:he_him: Living in #Naarm (#Melbourne) on Wurundjeri Woiwurrung country; I nerd. Linux/open source; metal casting; wild clay pottery; climbing; brewing; motorcycles; very left; completely atheist. Once upon a time, I was a sysadmin: SunOS and Solaris, and then Linux. Now, I'm a consultant, telling people what they've already heard about DevOps (the cultural kind, not just k8s with sugar on).

Current status: 4 levels deep in environment variable interpolation escape parsing debuggery, including plain Docker, Docker-compose, AND a custom binary. I’ll feel very satisfied when I work this one out, but increasingly it feels like I spend my life trying to shoot salt crystals through multiple slices of randomly-aligned Swiss cheese

Happy Friday! Don’t forget to git push to prod on your way out this afternoon

nonspecialist,

@jerry eh. If your pipeline doesn’t catch it, you’re worrying about the wrong thing. And testing in prod whether you admit it or not

Today was ... interesting. If you followed me for the past months over on the shitbird site, you might have seen a bunch of angry German words, lots of graphs, and the occassional news paper, radio, or TV snippet with yours truely. Let me explain.

In Austria, inflation is way above the EU average. There's no end in sight. This is especially true for basic needs like energy and food.

Our government stated in May that they'd build a food price database together with the big grocery chains. But..

@ausfestivus @kcarruthers it should, we’d only have to add 2 letters

for all the good computer-touchers on the fediverse: avahi-daemon on systems.—do I need it?
Seems to be eating a bit more CPU than it should on my work machine, perhaps due to the size of the network(?). I can't work out what it's actually providing in return. The printers at work don't work with linux anyway, and I'm not connecting to any smart devices or anything, just some windows network shares. Will anything break if I just remove it?

nonspecialist,
@nonspecialist@aus.social avatar

@jpm @stib yeah that. It’s odd that it’s using a lot though, mDNS is pretty lightweight - but local network bullshit (windows boxes and macs spew a lot of random crap) might contribute. If you don’t need to “find printers automatically” it’s safe to systemctl disable && systemctl stop

nonspecialist,
@nonspecialist@aus.social avatar

@jpm be the break in the protocol fuckery you want to see

nonspecialist,

@jpm @stib so much of this is reading signs and making sacrifices

@jpm @stib lol

@jpm @stib what’s amazing is how it all kinda works anyway (your local value of “works” may vary)

Someone tooted the words “Agadoo by Black Lace” on the weekend and ever since then I’ve had a 3 second snippet on repeat in my head. So, whoever that was, thanks a fucking lot. If you don’t know what I’m on about I strongly recommend you don’t find out.

Also, looking for recommendations for an earworm that can supplant this one.

I’m upgrading my portable workbench today. Fairly rough job but once I add some 3D printed benchdogs and stuff it’ll be much better than the old one

@jpm @drunkenmadman ah, so replaced chipboard with finer chipboard

@jpm yeah nobody does aluminium shelves any more

@jpm good idea, that way all you need to do is make sure the floor is well sealed

So someone (fuckers) broke into the house last night, took the car keys, and stole both our cars. The i30, ok, fine, we can replace that; the ioniq 5? what are the chances of being able to get another one of those nowadays?

Feeling sad, angry, and helpless this morning.

Hey lazyweb, do you have a go-to 240V LED GU10 downlight and/or E14 corncob light? Ours constantly die with failed caps because our line voltage is usually above 250V during the day when the solar inverter is running.

nonspecialist,
@nonspecialist@aus.social avatar

@jpm are you sure you’re fixing the right problem?

nonspecialist,
@nonspecialist@aus.social avatar

@jpm @geordie oh fair enough then. I hadn’t realised the spec was so wide

nonspecialist,
@nonspecialist@aus.social avatar

@jpm @geordie it still sounds like a 250V rated cap is waaaay too close for comfort though.

@drunkenmadman I see you also adhere to the “wooden salad bowl otherwise useless for salad becomes the dumping ground for small things” aesthetic. It’s so prevalent among our extended family that we just call it “the wooden bowl” in many households and everyone knows where to look

nonspecialist,
