US Secretary of State Blinken, in a call with the Israeli defense minister, Yoav Gallant, “underscored the urgent need to protect civilians and aid workers in Gaza and urged the Minister to ensure assistance can move into Gaza and help address distribution challenges inside of Gaza as Israel pursues Hamas targets.”

Why were most of the cyclists in this photo wearing masks in November 1977? Was it to avoid breathing polluted air?

If so, thank goodness we have the EPA now; I hope we can address modern threats to air quality, like climate change related wildfires, rather than giving up and letting the air become difficult to breathe again.

oreoteeth,
@oreoteeth@jawns.club avatar

@skyfaller I grew up not far from the Lehigh Valley Velodrome. I can remember some of the cyclists wearing either balaclavas or masks in smog season. Most didn't but nobody seemed to care about people who chose to protect themselves from particulates back then.

oreoteeth,
@oreoteeth@jawns.club avatar

@skyfaller July and August for the most part in the 70s and early 80s. The radio station with all the weather gadgets that used to do the local measurement was bought out somewhere around the mid 80s when I was at college. So I can't say if the air quality improved or not. It was just that people stopped checking it.

oreoteeth,
@oreoteeth@jawns.club avatar

@skyfaller Well, we do get those freakishly warm fall days sometimes. It's def possible that there are smog days in the spring or fall. I mostly went to the Velodrome on summer nights. Couldn't say if LV cyclists were still masking in the fall.

And of course it's also possible that local industry smokestacks were pumping out more pollution than normal on that particular day.

Justice Merchan starts off will the prosecution motion for contempt.

He tells Trump he's about to issue his ruling, in which he will again find Trump in contempt of court.

The last thing I want to do is put you in jail, Justice Merchan says to Trump. You are the former President of the United States and possibly the next President as well.

But "going forward," he continues, "this court will have to consider jail sanctions" if necessary.

@GottaLaff NFL I'm confused as to why the confusion about personal expenses is part of the defense strategy. Shouldn't a reputable business have always known that the owner's personal expenses are paid personally by the owner and his/her own personal account?

I hired a landscape designer and he delivered this . It looks good, but somehow communication broke down and they included a lot of non-native plants when I thought I was clear I wanted native plants. If they include obvious introduced plants, how can I trust they'll source plants that meet my less visible criteria, like straight species / open pollinated & local ecotype? So I guess I have to modify and implement it myself, based on what native plants I can source.

Any feedback?

oreoteeth,
@oreoteeth@jawns.club avatar

@skyfaller I've no direct experience but I've heard good things about Edge of the Woods plant nursery in Orefield for native PA plants.

I have some good news to share. Monday I'm starting at the Philadelphia Airport as Director of IT Infrastructure and Operations. The Airport is another City department, and because this is all happening before my last official day with OIT, I can do this as a transfer and maintain my vacation/sick time as well as service credit towards pension.

I'd like to thank everyone who's reached out over the last couple of weeks to help me during this strange time of transition. It meant a lot to me.

I hate killing plants, even when I know it's necessary. I had a maple sapling growing in my yard too close to my little rowhome; wrong tree, wrong location. I dug it up.

I put it in a pot. Help. What do I do now? Anyone want a baby maple?

oreoteeth,
@oreoteeth@jawns.club avatar

@skyfaller There is a roughly 20 year old maple growing way too close to the garage because my parents and their landlady were too fond of a cute little sapling back in the day. You made the right choice and I hope you find it a nice home.

One significant obstacle on my zero waste journey, interfering with my ambition to send zero trash bags to the dump each week:

I feel compelled to pick up other people's garbage off the street, especially in front of my house. This goes in my trash bin, and now I have trash.

For years and years I subscribed to the New York Times in print, then digital. More recently I've had access through my employer. When that ends later this spring, I will not be subscribing again.

While it's still fine in some areas, its political coverage continues to be a heap of journalistic malpractice.

In recent days, the Times has made it absolutely clear that it has no intention of learning from perpetual failure.

In what matters most right now, the Times is a disgrace.

Enough.

oreoteeth,
@oreoteeth@jawns.club avatar

@dangillmor I never bothered subscribing since I could access the digital edition with my library card. Haven't bothered to log into the library to read the NYT in quite some time though. Not worth the aggravation.
