I know people love hating on but there are so many things that are great about it. The journal is among the best (and the one that people seem to hate the most for reasons I find hard to relate to). Building a service with good logging is literally free, no code required, STDOUT/STDERR goes to the journal, you're done. Ingesting those logs into something like Loki is also free.

My laptop screen broke, so I figured I could use my #SteamDeck as replacement. Didn't want to loose Steam OS, though, it's a gaming device after all.

So I bought a SanDisk SD card for 35€, and used #mkosi to flash a #fedora workstation disk image onto it. Took a few days to understand what #fedora packages I need for the full workstation experience, but in the the end the process was surprisingly smooth.

The whole #systemd ecosystem is amazing.

Discoverable partitions, systemd-boot, systemd stub, systemd-homed, #mkosi, etc. make this super easy.🤩

I can't imagine doing this without systemd. I still remember 2010... 😬

Very happy and proud of this collaboration between @codethink @gnome and @sovtechfund

https://www.codethink.co.uk/articles/2024/GNOME-OS-systemd-sysupdate/

Our goal is to make GNOME OS a daily driver for QA and finalize the migration, but this work will be fundamental to the future of all secure image based / immutable Linux distributions.

So I submitted a bunch of sd-resolved fixes for systemd v256, some names even resolve 10x faster!

It's pretty good now — try it out sometime and report any bugs!

v256~rc1 is out! You know the drill, download it, run it, find all the bugs and report them - possibly to somebody else, I'll be at the nearest pub

In retrospect, we should have figured out that Jia Tan was a plant from the fact that they showed up to do releases. In 20+ years of contributions to FLOSS projects I haven't found anybody willing to do the same.

Credit where credit is due! I'd really like to take a minute and thank Jia Tan how they helped us to finally get sd_notify() support merged into OpenSSH upstream!

Thank you, Jia, you rock!

My number one wish from the fallout of the xz backdoor is that it kills autoconf/configure/autohell. That shit is illegible and watching for compile failure is a shitty way to test for features

shoutout to @pid_eins for creating systemd -- systemd timers are 100x better than cron. Saved me a whole lot of time futzting with cron.

maxamillion, to linux

I'm just going to say it, and we can agree to disagree if you do in fact disagree...

systemd has categorically made Linux better in basically every way imaginable

It's earnestly cool if you don't agree but it's really really good

About the true purpose of systemd

I've been involved with , , and , ...

I've met @pid_eins and other prominent figures behind closed doors

I can confirm from first-hand experience that systemd is indeed a conspiracy to make better operating systems with Linux
