was discussing "success" with a client today and introduced him to Simon Petley's comment:

“the reward for doing it has to be better than the reward for not doing it, otherwise people will simply not do it”

which explains why some of your staff behave the way they do . . .

I'm off home now, it's been an interesting day!

As a rough estimate, how often do you navigate to a website or individual page by directly typing its URL (including browser URL bar autocomplete)?

proactivepaul,
@proactivepaul@mastodon.social avatar

@simon

99% of the things I need are either on my private wiki or in my business CRM

the other 1% comes from the search tool in my browser - DDG

cannot remember the last time I typed a URL

imagine that I'm a year 1 undergrad

and big corporate tech bros are talking about:

or

or

what do they actually mean in the bigco tech sector sense of the word?

if you can give me any one or more definitions (that your average 18 year old student can understand) I would appreciate it

thx

proactivepaul,
@proactivepaul@mastodon.social avatar

@airwhale that's really helpful, thanks

and I agree that these definitions are hard!

proactivepaul,
@proactivepaul@mastodon.social avatar

@airwhale

exactly!

Hohl highlights the difference between “doing agile” and “being agile” and explains that “being agile means that the individual, the team, and the organization have changed”.

@b0rk the reason I gave up on Git . . .

on page one of chapter one of some documentation (years ago) it started

the first thing you have to understand about Git is that it's not SVN

huh?

that's like trying to learn to ride a bike and your dad says

the first thing you have to understand about a bicycle is that it's not a horse

meaningless drivel

I did get to page 4 of the book before I gave up

I have a personal primitive versioning system that predates Git, and I still use it

UK friends - do you have an air conditioner?
If so, which one?
There are so many different options and I don't know how to choose!

Boosts, as ever, appreciated.

(UK replies only, thanks. Not interested in fans & ice-cubes. Will be run off solar power, so I'm comfortable with the energy usage. Yes, I hate having to ward off reply-guys with these long disclaimers.)

@NigelNotNeil @Lee6 when I lived in Geneva (for 3 years) all my runs were like that, everything slopes down to the lake, so even the flatest routes involved inclines

my apartment was at the top of 600m hill

perfect T junction - 3 ways in and out - the 3 options involved a 600m or 1000m or 1500m of incline from every direction

the sensible routes all went along the steep 600m one

sensible in all respects apart from that 600m !

In Japan today is the first day of the academic year.

It also means that the fresh faced graduates from last month generally start work today.

It's also the first day at work for Princess Aiko of Japan.

This is a first! Never before has anybody from the Imperial family graduated and then started work!

public service announcement

is your making a whining noise?

check Dyson and it says that's what they do when they get old, time for a new one

but no . .

here's a 2min video which has 3 secs of good advice

"change the filter"

being a sceptic I have tried to clean the filter and it's now hanging up to dry

is it really the filter?

try this . .

run your vac for 15 secs with no filter

has the whining stopped?

yep, it was the (dirty) filter!
