Again for people (racists), complaining about falling birth rates:

The birth rate for women over 40 is not falling. The birth rate for women over 30 is not falling.

What's happening, is girls 15 to 17 are having fewer babies. Kids are having fewer kids.

Also, this is an interesting way of saying that "Teen pregnancy is down, due to sex education and contraception."

In 1991 25% of 15 year olds gave birth before they turned 21. That's bad. Now it's 6%. That's better.

@mekkaokereke not a woman but as an adult who can give birth, I fucking would if I could afford to have kids right now. Because of capitalism, I probably can't for a long time and maybe not ever. But if I could just be a stay at home parent or afford kids while working part time, I would. I know plenty of people in this category, but it's really not about birth rates and entirely about control. Forcing adults to know nothing but work and forcing kids to have kids

I think most people would object to forcing women to wear skirts. Beating up girls who do unladylike things like dancing or calculus. Many can even see how silly it is to tease a boy for enjoying painting more than sports.

Most* get this.

What I don't understand is how it isn't obvious that transphobia is the exact same impulse.

There is no "reasonable" amount of transphobia you can tolerate without also supporting rigid harmful gender norms in general. 1/

@Oggie @futurebird the worst part is that most of them know. When cishet men propose laws to hurt trans people, they love that cis women will be hurt in the process. When cis women propose them, especially queer cis women, some part of them knows but they're willing to go through subjugation as long as they're also getting to be the boot sometimes. This messaging will only work with moderates who haven't made up their mind on what they're willing to accept, so let's hope that's enough.

Y'all want to hear a fact that really changed the way I thought about homelessness?

Half of all homeless people were in the foster system at some point. Social Workers often call the foster system The Highway to Homelessness. If you ever had a point in your life where you had to live with friends or family to for a short time to get back on your feet, remember that is a privilege that not everyone had.

@quantumg @Rayston @RickiTarr yeah no. When I was homeless I would regularly think I wanted to go home, but I could never pinpoint a location. Wanna know why? Because I was fucking homeless! And because I grew up in poverty and my entire life has been moving frantically trying to find a permanent place to stay and never, to this day, finding one. But I've always wanted a home. I have a feeling this is more common than people who decided they don't want one.

The real, dangerous disinformation, is coming from traditional media channels and places like Twitter, and it is in service of white nationalism, and its primary victims are Black people. But we don't want to talk about that. We just want to yell "Ban TikTok!"

That said, the recent spam attacks show the need for more advanced tools for server admins and mods to share information. The call for such tools became a point of contention during the first twitter migration last year and the fediverse and mastodon missed out on the support of black users, trans users, and members of other groups targeted by bad actors due to was was perceived to be unresponsiveness and "free speech absolutism" by some of the big players.

I'm not calling out anyone specifically, and I know this usage is very common … but can we stop disparaging crutches as bad things?

Why is "it's just a crutch!" a valid criticism?

@ahimsa_pdx they seem to be under the impression that not using a crutch leads to healing, and that using a crutch leads to using it forever. And they're super attached to the idea that the more abled someone is the better so obviously healing=good and crutch bad! (Never mind the fact that crutches help with healing, and that if someone tries to walk on a broken leg without assistance they'll just do more damage instead of simply learning how not to have a broken leg)

But once their needs are met, they don't really give a shit about the rest of us, so they're content with just repeating the same cycle every 4 years while never fighting for the rights of those who are already oppressed no matter who's in office

I know it’s a privilege but we found a group of masking families and we just came from an outdoor birthday party where we all masked and the kids had a blast. I can’t stop smiling. This is what it could be. Games, fun, normal kid stuff. Just in a mask. I hope people saw us at the park today: an island of an alternate reality that could be where people cared.

@agathachristieandcoffee I'm glad those kids get to grow up seeing health and safety measures as something that empowers them to have fun and make connections, rather than some sort of burden like propaganda has been saying. Masks should be as normalized as seatbelts or close-toed shoes or harnesses (for climbing or pets, either way they generally protect the wearer)

Genders are really just collections of vibes. "Man" and "Guy" are different genders that are often in the same person's Gender Collection. Not only are there more genders than male and female, male and female aren't even in the top 10 most common genders. Some much more popular genders right now are "girls just wanna have fun [commit murder]" and "sports"

Some scientists were able to use egg whites to remove 99% of plastic and 90 something% of salt from water samples which is cool as hell but both articles I've seen about this have framed it as a way to solve plastic pollution in the ocean.

If Israel managed to kill all of Hamas without harming a single civilian I'd be like "well that was harsh" but I wouldn't be 24/7 angry and sad about it like I am. @puppygirlhornypost perisex trans people (especially nonbinary people) owe intersex people so much more solidarity than most of us give them. They're not just a pawn for arguments of our validity, and I really hope that I come across as someone safe to have community with. I think a lot of the time we can trust that intersex people are probably not transphobic like we can with other trans people, and I wish that also worked vice versa but from what I've seen it really doesn't

Like, I can understand the appeal to bodily autonomy re: not wearing face masks. I don't like it, and people refusing to wear masks in high-risk situations are being careless with other people's lives, but I at least can understand it.
But trying to make it illegal for immunocompromised people to protect ourselves in a way that harms no one? Stripping away our bodily autonomy by not letting us decide what goes on our own faces? Quite literally mask off in their ableism/eugenics
