Again for people (racists), complaining about falling birth rates:

The birth rate for women over 40 is not falling. The birth rate for women over 30 is not falling.

What's happening, is girls 15 to 17 are having fewer babies. Kids are having fewer kids.

Also, this is an interesting way of saying that "Teen pregnancy is down, due to sex education and contraception."

In 1991 25% of 15 year olds gave birth before they turned 21. That's bad. Now it's 6%. That's better.

@mekkaokereke not a woman but as an adult who can give birth, I fucking would if I could afford to have kids right now. Because of capitalism, I probably can't for a long time and maybe not ever. But if I could just be a stay at home parent or afford kids while working part time, I would. I know plenty of people in this category, but it's really not about birth rates and entirely about control. Forcing adults to know nothing but work and forcing kids to have kids

I wonder if the tech solutioneers trying to create* a single fediverse identity ever talk to real people. In the real world, we maintain many identities, and they're separate on purpose. Sometimes our lives literally depend on it.

@earthlingusa @StillIRise1963 my phone is set to automatically use DuckDuckGo. I rarely find the answers I seek there either. It's not just a Google problem (although tbc Google is the worst), the whole web has been blended into an SEO AI bot mush.

@rick @salad_bar_breath this is it. I'm not even in the first two groups because I don't make money and I usually don't try to replicate existing products, but when I make any sort of tool it's almost always because I personally could benefit from it, and I don't pay that much attention to how other people feel about it past basic accessibility and "I should share this in case it's useful to other people too." But it sucks that FOSS is no exception either

Being trans and immunocompromised is so fun bc after years of HRT I finally got a masculine face but no one ever fucking sees it because no one else stays home when they're sick so I can't safely exist anywhere without a mask! @amy @kayleeserenada especially if the majority of this interaction is with people who will be the least harmed by them. E.g. if someone is a huge misogynist, it should be cis (probably het) men to try to neutralize them before giving them access to a community as a whole. Abled allies can educate others on disability to help disabled ppl avoid the hassle. Allyship and solidarity is really important for stuff like this

I personally think that transexual is quite the opposite of an "icky word". It's actually quite powerful.

A lot of people think sex is not socially constructed, and immutable, and rather construe "gender" to be this other metaphysical construct we're allowed to "change" because it is "socially constructed" on top of that.

But I say fuck that noise. Sex is just as bullshit and interchangable as gender. Do whatever you want with it.

@salad_bar_breath imo sex is both, but people seem to confuse "sex is a socially constructed false dichotomy to categorize groups of biological characteristics" with "sex is one of two biologically defined categories" and like... That's not rlly how biology works

What's the cheapest long-term mass storage option for digital files on physical storage? Has to be able to connect to a computer somehow without necessarily being a part of it

@vendetta good point. If I still can't figure out how to set up nextcloud on my third try, I'm sure a gitea server would work for my needs and I know I've gotten one of those running before /gen

I think most people would object to forcing women to wear skirts. Beating up girls who do unladylike things like dancing or calculus. Many can even see how silly it is to tease a boy for enjoying painting more than sports.

Most* get this.

What I don't understand is how it isn't obvious that transphobia is the exact same impulse.

There is no "reasonable" amount of transphobia you can tolerate without also supporting rigid harmful gender norms in general. 1/

@Oggie @futurebird the worst part is that most of them know. When cishet men propose laws to hurt trans people, they love that cis women will be hurt in the process. When cis women propose them, especially queer cis women, some part of them knows but they're willing to go through subjugation as long as they're also getting to be the boot sometimes. This messaging will only work with moderates who haven't made up their mind on what they're willing to accept, so let's hope that's enough.
