If the value of a person's life comes from being self-supporting or a productive member of society, then every young child, senile grandparent, seriously ill patient, and disabled person currently incapable of work...is worthless. And we all know that's not true. Hell, every one of us will spend time in at least one of those categories. Are we all worthless?

The work we do having any value at all implies there's already a person on the receiving end who matters before any work is done. Don't let them lie to you and tell you that you don't matter if you can't support yourself or be productive. Work matters because people matter, not the other way around.

@QasimRashid It depends on their other stances, frankly. I'd probably let fracking slide if the opponent was in favor of weaponizing women's bodily autonomy, for instance.

    We often hear the phrase "first they came for the [vulnerable marginalized group], but I didn't say anything ... then they came for me." Simplistic, but we have actually seen this happen repeatedly in history, where a repressive regime starts with soft targets.

    We also often hear "if we don't protect Nazi speech, they'll come for [vulnerable marginalized group] speech." I can't think of any real-life examples of this, though. Can you? Please advise!

    @annaleen This feels like the logic of people who have made gods (in the American Gods sense) of their ideals, where the ideal is some kind of autonomous entity with its own power to act upon the world, and which will lose that power if it is not not worshipped appropriately.

    @tveastman Countersuggestion: Wikimedia has been tens of millions of dollars in the black for 9 out of the last 11 years[1]. Donate to the Internet Archive instead, so all the references that back up the articles can continue to exist. :D

    Trump has:

    • No chin cleft

    • Doesn't have a bifid nose tip

    • His nose isn't upturned

    • Shorter ears + placed higher on his head

    • No defined cheek bones

    • A plumper face

    • Trump's 25 years older

    • Trump's hair is much thinner

    I"m open to suggestions for tonight. I've tried: reading, meditation, audiobooks, switching rooms, tea, and warm milk.

    So now I'm being told that a few people on a instance with 1000s of users who complain that you don't use CW or alt-text the way they want can result in your being blocked for the entire instance, even when you've never received any notification of this.

    Sort of like how you'd get arrested in fascist countries and never told why. Kafka would recognize this for sure.

    I would assert that this makes even more of a toy than I thought it was, and utterly unreliable for much beyond trading photos of kitties. Leela the Siamese Snowshoe approves of kitty photos of course, but beyond that anyone depending on might charitably be called "misguided" at best, if my understanding of the situation is correct.

    And I feel that the public needs to understand that they're buying into this sort of nonsense if they're looking at as an alternative to Elon's hellscape.

    Now I'll probably get blocked for this post. -L

    @lauren Yeah, I feel like unilateral blocking needs to be available as an option but the option should only be used in very specific types of cases. It's a hard joint to carve.

    Re the first case, I'm not sure that a federated platform is more prone to this than a monolithic one?
