Last week I visited Crookston Castle with David and Brian of the Friends group to meet with a reporter from @Glasgow_Live. Sadly, it was extremely wet so there wasn't much of a turnout! Crookston Castle is the 2nd oldest building in Glasgow (after the cathedral) and is the only surviving castle in the city. It's also a node in

Another rather unique Glasgow tenement, this time on the corner of Langside Road and Queen's Drive on the city's Southside. Designed by W.M Whyte in a French Renaissance style, but with a statue of Liberty on the top, it was built in 1885.

You'll often hear it said there are five statues of Liberty in Glasgow. However, in reality, this is the only one as all the others are different allegorical female figures.

@thisismyglasgow I've passed that so many times on the bus but never noticed the statue! A reminder to in Glasgow.

Dowsing lessons at the Rollright Stones. I've just heard that Ron Dudley-Smith, a dowser who was one of the wardens at the Rollrights, passed away a couple of days ago. You can see a picture of him here: https://www.rollrightstones.co.uk/get-involved/friends

Ok, anyone got a recommended Open Source utility or program for ripping my Amazon Kindle books to a DRM free format that I can open in something that isn't the Kindle app on my machine?

I am getting highly annoyed at every copy from it dumping the book's citation in amongst the clipboard. Get wrecked. Never mess about with default OS level UI like that.

@scotdowser@mastodon.scot avatar

@mattwilcox Yes, you can do this with Calibre with a bit of extra juggling: https://nerdschalk.com/remove-drm-kindle-books-de-drm/

Quiz time!
As some of you may know, I'm republishing the works of the late Harry Bell. Can any archaeology or stone botherer chums help me to identify the souterrain or chamber in this picture? The only hint I have is that it may be in France..?

The Auld Wives' Lifts on Craigmaddie Muir north of Glasgow. Folklore says they were placed by three giantesses having a contest. The stones have several Celtic-style head carvings and the hole is aligned to the winter solstice sunset. You are supposed to crawl through the hole on first visit else you will die childless (a wetsuit is recommended if you wish to try this!). They sit in a natural amphitheatre said to have been a place of Druidic assembly.

Former Israeli ambassador to UN asks why we care about ‘inhuman animals’ in Gaza.

Dan Gillerman is not ashamed to speak racism out loud, leaving even Sky interviewer nonplussed.

@russellt I've been to Israel twice, once on holiday and once for work, and both times was appalled at the arrogance and blatant racism from several Israelis. You couldn't pay me enough to visit there again.

    The Maiden Stone, a Pictish carved megalith near Inverurie in Aberdeenshire. Legend says that the Laird's daughter bet a stranger that she could bake a bannock faster than he could build a road to the top of Bennachie, with the prize being her hand. The stranger being the Devil, he finished the road and claimed her hand. However, she ran away but was turned to stone, the notch in the stone is where the Devil grasped her shoulder as she ran.
