Today is the 125th anniversary of the start of the Philippine–American War, which is the ‘ biggest conflict in the period between the Spanish–American War and World War I. The Americans‘ victory by 1902 cemented the U.S.‘ reputation as an imperial power with colonies across the Pacific from Manila to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

What I find really sad is that most Americans don’t even know about this war, which is glossed over in American history school books.

If you want to get an overview of this war, Johnny Harris did a pretty decent 19-minute video about it: https://youtu.be/7fcqhU-23TA

Awesome! Brian Sperlongano (ZeLonewolf) has published a new extension that modifies object web pages to display human-readable info related to tags. Now in addition to the opaque QIDs, you get to see the actual item label and a link to corresponding article if any!

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/osm-human-readable-wikidata/

There's also a Chrome extension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/osmorg-human-readable-wik/nmncgjaphflibllipiiphlngaogimgli

Happy 20th birthday to the Tagalog Wikipedia (that is according to the English Wikipedia article about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tagalog_Wikipedia) 🎉🎂

I somehow remember requesting that the Tagalog Wikipedia be created, but I no longer remember when or where I placed that request and I couldn’t find any record of how tlwp got created. 😝 But by convention @joshlim and I pegged the creation date to December 1 as the Internet Archive first crawled the domain on November 30.

🗺️ Day 1️⃣5️⃣:

I guessed that most mappers would of course be rendering maps made from OSM data. But because I live and breathe OSM (I even served on the Foundation Board for 2 years!) and I don’t want to go with the bandwagon, I decided to map OSM metadata instead!

Here is a map of the bounding boxes of almost all of my 349 OSM changesets for 2023 which is obviously all over my country the 🇵🇭.

To celebrate ’s 19th anniversary today, the OSM Foundation has just launched a new “Supporting” website where you can support the project by either donating some money or joining as a normal or corporate member of the Foundation.

https://supporting.openstreetmap.org/

P.S. I’m not involved in this new website; just a messenger.

P.P.S. This new website replaces the old “Donate” and “Join” websites which now redirect to this new website.

P.P.P.S. I see some bugs/issues with the new website.

I hate that we in the 🇵🇭 have inherited a car-centric mentality due to nearly 50 years as a colony of the United States. Having experienced the excellent public transportation of cities like Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Berlin, London, Milan, Amsterdam, and Madrid, I can only feel sadness because the transportation system in Manila is way behind our peer metropolises in Southeast Asia.

#30DayMapChallenge 🗺️ Day 1️⃣: Points

I will probably regret joining this map challenge but let’s try doing this for the first time!

This map visualizes the 7100 islands 🏝️ of the Philippines that were catalogued by the United States and published in Volume 5 of the 1939 Census of the Philippines.

We suspected that this was the original source for the official number of 7107 islands before 2016 when 500+ more islands were identified by NAMRIA.

I guess I shouldn't have been surprised that Sabah also has a bamboo pole dance similar to the Philippines' Tinikling or Singkil. This one is called Magunatip.

🗺️ Day 1️⃣1️⃣: Retro

This post is kinda late. 😝 Anyway, I had some code from several years back that lets me render a faux portolan chart as an SVG image in the browser given a GeoJSON data of coastlines. So for today I tried to resurrect this idea and chose to render a map of 🇰🇳. After drawing the basic elements, I then went into to add labels and finishing touches.

Data is of course from (licensed under the ODbL 1.0).

🗺️ Day 7️⃣:

Decided to do something “simple” for today. Here is a map of all ferry routes ⛴️ in the 🇵🇭 that have been mapped in . Data has been extracted via (data licensed under ODbL 1.0) and rendered via .

Since the Philippines is an archipelago, ferries and boats are important means of transportation especially since the thousands of small islands are too small to host airstrips.

Day 0 of is done!

The massive 6-foot-tall cardboard sculpture of the Wikipedia 'W' logo is pretty nifty. And the plenary hall is massive! 😮 I will be presenting here on Thursday and I'm already intimidated. 😱

I wonder if there should should also be a next year in November? Basically try to map something new or improve an existing object based on a daily theme in .

So for example, Day 8 could be “Roads”, and you could map a new road or add a surface=* tag or name:etymology=* tag to an existing road.

It would be something fun to do and could help folks achieve the 42 days needed to qualify for free membership to the OSM Foundation (if they want to join).

The recent English-only drama over on just made me aware that my instance, en.osm.town, is ostensibly an English-primary instance (it's right there in the hostname!) and was created after the now-defunct French-language fr.osm.social instance but we welcome any language toots. And we have four moderators all speaking at least 6 languages among us. Then again, we are a pretty small instance.
