The thing I like least about the recent wave of inflation is having to now forensically check every cafe/restaurant menu to decide whether I can afford to eat there. Never really had to do that before. But prices are soaring while my freelance income remains much the same.

sister_ratched,
@sister_ratched@toot.community avatar

@Susan60 @timrichards The thing about this ongoing convo is that most cafes etc run on very slim profit margins. Rents are ridic, cost of ingredients too, but wages is the clincher. Are the staff being paid properly? All other things being equal, you have to wonder whether the cheaper joints (eg Asian restaurants) are paying staff properly. Just something to bear in mind.

Noticed the payment wasn't coming out of my bank account. We mailed it April 26th. Mortgage company got it today, May 14, said it was postmarked April 30, waived late fee.

said it went from here & got shipped to another postal center & processed then sent to another center & finally back to the local post office

Our mortgage payment was late because the is screwed up

Our post office, mortgage company & I are within a mile of each other

@paul You MAIL your mortgage?? Can't it just be direct debited somehow, online?

Fair point - if you're not using digital payments, you should make the effort to get used to them. Cash is (mostly) going away. (This article also contains a guide to getting started with digital.)

Cash is dead. Why are we still pretending it isn’t?

I haven’t encountered a single vegetable-centered dish at any of the Thai, Japanese, Malaysian restaurants I’ve visited in LA. It is possible to eat differently from the rest of the world (re a conversation a few days ago about always having to order veggies)

(To be clear, I agree everyone should eat veggies if they want! But also that, there are many cuisines which simply aren’t vegetable-centered)

(I had a very large raw papaya salad, lots of fiber but also enough chilli to kill a bear)

Picked up the lovely French trio again and delivered them to the concert hall. It was dusk so the cockies were deafening, which amused them no end. Looking forward to hearing them do Beethoven tonight, once I've wrangled all the nannas in and out of the lift.

It's been an amazing journey since I started toot.community. However, due to personal commitments, I'm stepping down. The community deserves undivided attention, which I can't provide anymore. So, I'm handing the reins over to the reliable hands of the Fedihosting Foundation (https://fedihosting.foundation). I have confidence they'll keep treating you the way you deserve.

I'm grateful for the connections I made here, and I'd like to thank you all for your support and trust in me. It means a lot. ❤️

When could Australians have access to a new COVID-19 vaccine? | SBS News

On Tuesday, the WHO and EMA recommended an update to COVID-19 vaccines to target the JN.1 variant.

Professor Raina MacIntyre was part of the WHO team which made its recommendation.

Vaccines using mRNA technology can be updated and manufactured in under two months according to MacIntyre and Griffin, but regulatory bodies need to provide the green light, which can lead to delays.

"The speed of the process, from [Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation] recommending it, to [Therapeutic Goods Administration] approvals to roll out is one challenge, which adds to the delay in getting vaccines into arms," MacIntyre said.
