Words for hire. Canadian, so… funny-ish? West Coast. Foodie. Oxford commas are a hill I’ll die on. Traveller. Anti-Nazi, pro-science.

In 2015, I sold everything to travel the world for over 4 years. I stopped 3 months before the pandemic. 25 countries in the Before Times? Worth it.

I share photography, tasty things, & cooking tips. I'm also political, left-leaning. Victoria, Canada.

And I swear. A lot.

April 5th and I already had to harvest 6” of oregano last night. Gave it to a foodie neighbour. I expect to do 5-6 harvests by November.

I still have a jar of dried oregano I’m using from last year.

It was 5 harvests last year, but it is the healthiest it has been since I planted it in 2021. I think my new habit of misting it each evening is going well. Water in the morning, a light mist at night.

Not bad for a plant I paid $4 for in 2021.

Buying established herbs usually goes well.

From above, my grow bag of oregano shows a dense new growth coming in, and a quarter of it is still big and floofy

@bici I dunno! Just south-facing and a big 5-gallon grow bag. Water generously in the morning and mist at night. I don’t fertilize.

Someone said they are planting herbs and lettuce this weekend because of my post. My work here is done! Huzzah!

Grow food. Eat yummy things. Save money.

What’s happening to libraries is right out of Maoist China and Stalin.

When they come for the thinkers, you best be paying attention, because democracy’s on the outs.

I mean, that’s if you already have been sleeping through the terrorizing of women’s bodies and trans rights and racial oppression and all that jazz.

What the ever-lasting fuck is America doing to libraries?

One of the greatest institutions ever conceived and they are demonizing it.

Founded today, 1994: Mosaic Communications Corporation. You're probably more familiar with their second name, though: Netscape. My first glimpse of the web in 1995.

I was fascinated by that animated N icon. It got to me the way work by Dali and Magritte did: eerie, surreal, kind of haunting, with the glowing horizon and flying meteors during pageload. (90s internet meant seeing those meteors a lot).

Here's to yesterday's UI design, and yesterday's web.

@csilverman pity about the whole Marc Andreessen thing and all, though. Yesterday, indeed.

If YOU want to buy ESTABLISHED PLANTS so you have a plug-&-play garden with less of a learning curve, then go you!

You buy that shit, man! Plant those plants!

Insta-food-garden? Fuck, yeah!

Don't you let ANYONE shame you for taking shortcuts that get you planting & growing your food. However you get that hobby started, let it empower you!

These "plant seeds, not seedlings" people are HARMING the grow-your-own-food culture.

Whatever gets you gardening is a beautiful thing. Just grow it.

snarkysteff,
@snarkysteff@mastodon.online avatar

@TheJen Some goof on Bluesky. They got muted. They MEAN well, but they are inadvertently shitting on people for using seedlings at all by constantly saying it's foolish to pay $4 for 6 plants when you can get 80 seeds.

Well, sure, but I have a 5x15 balcony and time is of the essence, and I'm not growing seeds in a 600 square-foot apartment with shitty winter light, thanks!

snarkysteff,
@snarkysteff@mastodon.online avatar

@TheJen hahah. thank you! /rant off

@RolloTreadway

Yes -- I had so much disappointment with a few things I did from seed, so it really depends what you're hoping to accomplish and how much time you have for doing it.

With shorter growing seasons in many regions, established plants are a game-changer!

snarkysteff,
@snarkysteff@mastodon.online avatar

@ytetic @Kikadee YES. EXACTLY!

snarkysteff,
@snarkysteff@mastodon.online avatar

@WackyIdeas @LibertyForward1 But maybe you don't want to grow from seed -- and that's okay too.

I do save the seeds from the tomatoes I love, because there are so many varieties.

snarkysteff,
@snarkysteff@mastodon.online avatar

@WhiteCatTamer Perfect!

snarkysteff,
@snarkysteff@mastodon.online avatar

@MillerTimeGarage @RolloTreadway YAY, I live in a crammed 600 sq ft apartment, so NO, I cannot.

The whole point of this thread is to tell people it's okay to NOT feel that this has to be the only way they can garden.

snarkysteff,
@snarkysteff@mastodon.online avatar

@guyjantic I did that with tomatoes! Traded bread. :)

snarkysteff,
@snarkysteff@mastodon.online avatar

@rspfau Yeah, people need to know when they can grow stuff and when they can't.

snarkysteff,
@snarkysteff@mastodon.online avatar

@Jonricha Yeah, I think these must be people with big yards or something. I'm not going broke if I drop $50 on seedlings for my patio. I run a side business, cook everything from scratch, am losing weight, etc. I got bigger fires than fucking around with seeds!

snarkysteff,
@snarkysteff@mastodon.online avatar

@joby right? Sourdough, etc.

snarkysteff,
@snarkysteff@mastodon.online avatar

@Pineywoozle @bmdhacks apparently it can take 10 years to get a harvest from asparagus so that was a long time in the making!

@wlonk I hate it when people wimp out on neurotransmitters. What lazy butts.

I felt like dropkicking someone elsewhere for going SEEDLINGS ARE GOOD BUT YOU CAN SAVE MORE BY PLANTING SEEDS and then refusing to drop the subject.

Look.

Seeds are easy to plant. They're great! I have 'em planted. They take 7-8 weeks to mature.

In the meantime, I want lettuce.

I COULD HAVE started seedlings in February in my apartment, but then I would have had allergic reactions, because my body seems to think plants belong outside.

If someone wants to buy seedlings--fuck off, let them.

Learned a new trick that's apparently an ancient Mexican trick for cooking tamales:

Put river rocks in the steaming water.

This way, as your tamales (or whatever) steams, the clattering of the rocks tells you there's still enough water for the job.

When the rocks stop rattling, you've run out of water and things will burn soon.

I know I'll be throwing some rocks in the dishwasher for this little hack!

snarkysteff,
@snarkysteff@mastodon.online avatar

@michaelrussell Apparently contemporary dishwashers, for "heat drying," actually runs a super-hot wash cycle and it's the hot water steaming that causes it to "dry".

But yeah, people do oyster shells and shit, so I don't see why it wouldn't be fine.

Besides, it doesn't matter much, because you don't consume the steaming water, it just evaporates for cooking. The rocks just sit in there as an alarm system.

@snarkysteff@mastodon.online avatar

@jeromechoo I'm not even using vinegars these days, so no cooking wines, etc. It seems like every time I eat cleaner, I identify more triggers.

Instead of trying to find workarounds so I can eat something similar, I'm just listening to my body.

So, no dairy, sugar, corn, etc.

Again, hoping it's just for a few months, otherwise I'll start finding those workarounds so I can eat yummy foods from other regions.

For now, citruses for acid, etc, are my flavour kings. It sucks, but there we go.

snarkysteff,
@snarkysteff@mastodon.online avatar

@jeromechoo The GOOD news is, I'm finally figuring out what works for me, so that's great.

In the end, I'll be a far better cook for it -- it's challenging to make veggies thrilling.

I was pretty resentful about it a few months ago, but I'm starting to get the groove. I'm still of the "this is just a phase" mentality.

One day, I shall eat fermented foods again! Haha. (Happy to report I still can have a bit of MSG, at least. Kind of backwards, lol. )

Thanks, Jerome. :)
