Scoop: Solar storm is causing farmers' tractor GPS systems to go haywire. Many have shut down planting altogether during a critical period. A Deere dealer said accuracy is "extremely compromised"

This, from a John Deere dealer, is wild. They warn that affected tractors operated during this time will likely have made maps that are wrong, which will be wrong throughout the growing system, and which are wrong in an inconsistent way

So, I had surgery.

All those food issues I’ve increasingly suffered over the last 3-4 years now appear to be the result of a bowel blockage caused by surgical scar tissue that has formed since 2017.

I nearly waited too long to investigate & I am so grateful my surgeon pressured me to let him do surgery.

He operated laparoscopically and WAS DONE IN 45 MINUTES.

I lost 120 pounds trying to solve food-related issues, but if I had not, this quick surgery could not have been possible.

If you're under 30 the Brexiters don't want you getting into the EU too easily & seeing what they snatched us out of....

My friend was given duck eggs.

My tip was to make duck egg mayonnaise. It’s the same, but the duck yolk emulsifies better so you have to add more oil and make a larger batch.

You CAN make homemade mayonnaise that lasts two weeks, but you must ferment it, otherwise it only last 5 days.

Fermented mayo: Just add 1-2 tbsp whey (liquid from yogurt), leave at room temp 8 hours, then refrigerate & enjoy. It WILL thin it some, so make it thicker than you think, before adding the whey.

SRDas, (edited )
@SRDas@mastodon.online avatar

@snarkysteff ducks eggs are great for carbonara too,
I'm not sure why you say mayo will spoil in 5 days unless fermented. I've made some (chicken yolks) and sardine can olive oil that has lasted a month. There's enough acid in the mayo that it should be ok.
Regular (commercial) mayo (edited out: i̶n̶ ̶j̶a̶r̶s̶) doen't need to be refrigerated really if contamination is kept out

This post got a lot of buzz yesterday.

If you are new to gardening & have a small space, I highly recommend “grow bags” — they come in a variety of sizes. I use 5-gallon bags for herbs like oregano, thyme, etc, because they can grow abundantly.

For tomatoes, I use 10-gallon bags.

The herb and the bag are about $6, plus soil. My herbs have been performing well since 2021, so that’s a pretty great investment.

Get good quality soil, it helps!

@snarkysteff Those things are wonderful and easier to store than pots when not in use. I have 2 sets of 6 smaller bags sewn onto strips that I hang on an exterior wall for growing herbs and lettuce right outside my kitchen door. @thepoliticalcat

If YOU want to buy ESTABLISHED PLANTS so you have a plug-&-play garden with less of a learning curve, then go you!

You buy that shit, man! Plant those plants!

Insta-food-garden? Fuck, yeah!

Don't you let ANYONE shame you for taking shortcuts that get you planting & growing your food. However you get that hobby started, let it empower you!

These "plant seeds, not seedlings" people are HARMING the grow-your-own-food culture.

Whatever gets you gardening is a beautiful thing. Just grow it.

ytetic,
@ytetic@4bear.com avatar

@snarkysteff @Kikadee also when you buy seedlings you’re supporting the workers who produce them, generally more or less local to you, and keeping the knowledge of how to do that, at scale, alive in your larger community. Everyone should have the opportunity to raise from seed if they want to, but not the ob.

bmdhacks,

@snarkysteff my serial planting of starts has resulted in so many volunteer plants! A few strawberry starts grew to fill the whole bed. Potatoes pop up everywhere no matter how much I dig. Same with chives, parsley, tomatoes. And don't even get me started on perennials. Rhubarb, asparagus, raspberries are all expanding their territory. I've got three volunteer plum trees.

I'm also late to plant again this year so it's off to buy more starts!

@snarkysteff

Absolutely! Grow however your circumstances and/or skill levels dictate.

I started with a serious brown thumb. That was primarily a lack of experience/knowledge. This was probably 20+ years ago. I couldn’t have brought a seed to life, much less done so in a way that fostered a healthy and diverse productive garden.

Play around with stuff that’s your speed and don’t let anyone make you feel less for that.

Online there's almost always someone with a "Why dontcha..". Very rarely is it productive.

I had a large garden for years before moving to a condo, and been around gardens since I helped Mum plant as a 5 year old.

But with a short growing season, some things were just more successful from seedlings.

I couldn't imagine looking down on anyone doing one over the other.

It’s time, or will soon be time for you colder regions, for planting food gardens.

I’m motivating myself for some patio cleaning, so I dug up this photo from June last year.

My balcony is south-facing in Victoria Canada, just 5x15 feet long.

On it, I grow 15+ herbs, 3-dozen leafy greens (and share with my building), tomatoes, strawberries, sometimes cukes & peppers. I’ve grown carrots & peas too.

You can do a LOT on an apartment balcony!

Grow , eat better, save money. :)

@snarkysteff Nothing like fresh lettuce and growing one’s own herbs. I just canned up the 100+ pounds of tomatoes I grew last season. Harvested, cooked, froze. Made 20 pts of sauce! OMG! So delicious!

@snarkysteff You would exceed anything I can do. I wish everyone had the space to garden. We’d all be so much more connected to the earth and to our own health. Being able to taste, eat absolutely the freshest of anything is wonderful.

Shingrix Vaccination (1 of 2) Achievement unlocked. On top of not wanting to have shingles, I've been reading about how there's an increase in shingles possibly because of lower immunity if one has been infected with Covid.

I did have older shingles vaccination years ago (paid out of pocket) because I wasn't going to wait till I was 50 to get it. But Shingrix is much more effective vaccine. Now I'm older, my insurance covered the cost.

Wife just got back from an hour-long political "discussion" with the guy who was fixing our daughter's phone

Perfect example of something we are up against in November

Phone guy:

  • was a Biden voter in the last election
  • doesn't like Trump
  • started watching YouTube videos and podcasts about RFK Jr
  • now is obsessed with RFK Jr and all the pro-Russia & anti-Biden conspiracy theories

All thanks to the YouTube algorithm which literally guided him down this path with constant reinforcement

Hello, from my village, Siahar, in Punjab. I have arrived here to reconnect with my roots. This journey from the wilderness of the Yukon to my ancestral village in Punjab is more than just physical travel; it's an opportunity to reconnect with the land that fostered my growth.
As a child, I spent my formative years playing amidst these farms. These verdant lands are not just fields of crops; they are landscapes of my childhood. Hugging these crops felt like I was embracing my old friends.
