JUST IN: Three GOP county commissioners in Michigan's Delta County were just recalled. One lost to a Democrat; 2 lost to indies.

Recalls were motivated by the firing of a county administrator, as well as incumbents' opposition to DEI, according to: https://www.miningjournal.net/news/2024/05/22230-residents-eligible-to-vote-in-recall-election/

Bolts is trying something new: We're soliciting YOUR questions! Elections law expert Josh Douglas has a new book coming out on how SCOTUS keeps undermining voting rights, what it's doing, and how it's all coming to a head.

And he's agreed to answer some of your questions.

If you want to know anything on that topic... ask away! https://boltsmag.org/ask-bolts/

  1. If you want bail reform to succeed, you could try keep connecting ppl to services instead of throwing them in jail... who knew?

Well, a community group in Chicago is showing the way, with fascinating success, as we reported here. Will it be scaled up? https://boltsmag.org/illinois-pretrial-success-act/

We now know the results in 11 of the 15 Pennsylvania primaries we were watching at bolts.

Summer Lee & the AG race, down to the legislature.

Some interesting legislative primaries remain uncalled.

All tracked in here: https://boltsmag.org/whats-on-the-ballot/primaries-on-the-pennsylvania-ballot-april-23/

Summer Lee, the 1st Squad member to face a contested primary this year, prevailed in PA12.

AP just called it as Lee leads easily, with margin likely to continue growing.

She faced Bhavini Patel, who took issue with Lee's left-wing politics and criticism of Israel, and had support from conservative mega donor Jeffrey Yass.

Malcolm Kenyatta has won the Democratic primary to be the auditor in Pennsylvania.

You may remember him from the 2022 Senate race, where he ran against Conor Lamb and Fetterman.

But a tough test awaits: He'll face GOP incumbent DeFoor in a statewide race in November.

Politicians who say we should get "tough on crime" are often the same who push for cuts to social services. But that has big effects on public safety & crime as well. A new study shows how cutting Medicaid led the crime rate to rise: https://boltsmag.org/medicaid-coverage-public-safety-study/

Today I published a state-by-state guide to all of 2024's state supreme court races.

Abortion, voting rights, & other civil rights issues keep coming down to who voters put on bench... & they're electing 82 judges this year.

No excuse to not know! https://boltsmag.org/your-state-by-state-guide-to-the-2024-supreme-court-elections/

I decided to look at all 33 states with supreme court elections this year.

Why? Recent events show how they're greatly shaping civil & voting rights, abortion access, and a lot more. It's critical to pay attention.

Here's everything you need to know: https://boltsmag.org/your-state-by-state-guide-to-the-2024-supreme-court-elections/

NEW: Massachusetts prisoners are speaking out on how state is the evading reforms meant to restrict solitary confinement, telling Bolts they just changed the name.

The state prevented some from testifying against solitary... because they were in solitary. https://boltsmag.org/massachusetts-solitary-confinement/

Alabama just adopted a new law last week that criminalizes assisting people with absentee voting.

Wisconsin is just a week away from a referendum, placed by the GOP on a low-turnout day, that'd affect election administration in the run-up to November.

NEW: The GOP has put an extremely under-radar measure on Wisconsin's ballot on April 2, in two weeks. Voting groups in the state are warning the language is so vague it may chill their ability to get involved & fill in gaps. https://boltsmag.org/wisconsin-question-2-ballot-measure-election-administration/

Portugal was voting today, and exit polls show the center-right finishing narrowly ahead of the governing center-left, but failing to get a majority and would have to form a minority government. Importantly, the far-right surges to historic high by roughly doubling its result from the last election.

JUST IN: Governor Tony Evers signed new legislative maps for Wisconsin.

Maps give Dems a new shot at winning majorities in WI, undo GOP's hyper-gerrymander.

They were proposed by Evers after state supreme court struck down the gerrymander. GOP passed them last week to avoid court coming back in.
