Adding an easy way to create a Mastodon account on mastodon.social to the official app? Yes, please.

I don’t understand the drama around this. Not like it’s removing other instances, or the ability to switch instances afterwards. It just gives an easier way in for people who don’t understand the instances concept.

It’s a good thing. Anything that helps onboarding is a good thing, and no, it doesn’t mean the developer has gone evil or wants to centralize things. 🙄🙄

Final thoughts on the Red Hat thing: every supporter of the Red Hat move told me that "it's normal to want to prevent people from stealing the hard work and making a clone of it".

If you think grabbing the code and reusing it is "stealing", you don't understand FOSS.

No matter what RH clones contribute, or if they're worth it. That's not the point. The point is, RH builds their stuff using the GPL, and they have to redistribute using the GPL.

Everytime I go on Odysee, the content there seems to drift more and more towards conspiracy theories, complete disinformation and nonsense, or at worst ultra racist / xenophobic / hateful rethoric. The staff has a history of just saying amen to everything, including white supremacist stuff.

I’ve been thinking of abandoning it (I would keep PeerTube as the alternative to YouTube for people who really don’t want to use YT). Out of curiosity, a little poll about my content:

All it would take for AI to completely collapse is a ruling in the US saying these companies have to licence the content they used to train these tools.

They simply would never reach a sustainable business model if they had to fairly compensate all the people who wrote, drew, edited, sang or just created the content they use.

Simply being forced to respect attribution and licenses would kill them. Will that ruling ever happen? Maybe not. Should it? I think so.

Hey everyone!

I'm working on a video to see what the Linux community (or at least people who follow me) actually use.

So, I created a little form, hosted on my Nextcloud (hopefully it's up to the task...)

It's only up for 2 days, so don't hesitate to share it around, it will help me "touch grass" and see if my preconceived notions are confirmed, or invalidated!

https://nextcloud.thelinuxexp.com/index.php/apps/forms/s/XQRzMrs8QTtCjDfSyP4koA9o

Of course, it's all anonymous, no personal data, it's just for the purposes of creating the video.

Thanks for all the suggestions to fix my issues on macOS. A few remarks:

  • the option to always keep the menu bar visible in fullscreen wasn’t where people told me it was. I eventually found it in “missions control” for some reason.
  • Three fingers drag to move a window is awesome, why is it not in the main touchpad settings?
  • The “move” shortcut is the stupidest thing. Just use the command X feature that is IN THE MENU (why have it here if it’s greyed out all the time??)

I haven’t used as a daily driver in more than 5 years, so when I look at it, it’s with the eyes of someone who is not used to its weird, or, frankly, bad, design. I’ve worked in UX for 10 years, and some decisions Windows made are really sub-par.

And still, the bad user experience of Windows has a negative impact on desktops. Here is why!

Apparently, there are people who are happy that they won’t be able to install optional third party stores on iOS because they don’t live in the EU.

Like, why?! “Oh I’m sure glad this option to get more apps that Apple might have not allowed doesn’t come to MY phone!”

As a content creator, I’m all for getting more money, but forcing users to watch ads isn’t the way to do it… I think YouTube would lose a lot of viewers if they enforced this on everyone, and creators would suffer as a result.

I had already taken a superficial look at macOS, a year ago, but now, I spent 30 days with it, as my main OS, on an M1 MacBook Pro.

And boy am I glad this is over, and glad to be back on !

Here are my conclusions about the hardware, the software, and the general experience of using a Mac as a Linux user:

After talking about it with my Patreon supporters, and here on Mastodon, I decided to stop publishing to Odysee. I wrote a short blog post about the reasons, and the options people have to keep watching outside of YouTube if they want to:

https://thelinuxexp.com/Im-leaving-odysee/

It's not a decision everyone will agree with, but it's the one I'm comfortable with.

I de-activated my Twitter account today. I had decided to keep it without posting a while back, just in case anyone would try to use my handle to write weird stuff and impersonate me, but I realized there’s no way I’m ever going back to Twitter and posting anything there.

If someone impersonates me, well, since Twitter has become so ridiculous and toxic, I’m sure people will accept that it’s not me talking.

I wasn’t using this account, and hadn’t for something like a year, so, bye « X »!

After considering both positions, I made up my mind on the Red Hat situation. While they are probably allowed to do what they’re doing right now, I still feel that not only is it unethical, but it also will harm the entire Linux ecosystem when their business drops in response to their last move, first among hobbyists, and then at the companies these work for.

Here are my thoughts, in a more informal video than usual:

On the surface, the current distribution model (where distros package everything, from the kernel to the apps) seems fine.

But it's pretty broken, and it's holding the Linux desktop back, which is why distributions like or (and a lot more), are moving away from it, and replacing packages with Snaps and Flatpaks for graphical applications.

Here's my opinion on this, trying to explain why exactly this change needs to happen:

Twitter changing their name to “X” is pretty funny, in a “oh god what the hell” sort of way.

If only because in France, generally what we call “X” is… porn. Also way to completely ditch all brand power, history and recognizability for no reason 😂

Do they really think someone who didn’t download Twitter before has even a single chance to download “the X app”??

I can’t overstate how cool it is to have my own SteamOS “console”, under my TV. Might not feel like it’s a game changer, but being able to play my Steam games on Linux, on my TV, at high resolutions and details, with a controller friendly interface, it’s just… magical.

Haven’t really touched the PS5 since 😅

Plus, I can resume my games on the Steam Deck when I’m outside, or in bed. It feels like a complete ecosystem, and I love it. Now I want a Steam Controller 2, please.

How did the Final Fantasy 7 remake get so much praise? Combat is such a step down from the original’s turn based, side quests are the worst I’ve seen in a game since AC Odysee, making you re tread the same 5 areas. I’m getting strong Dragon Age 2 vibes from this combat and side quests.

Nostalgia factor is great, it looks cool, but man it doesn’t play well.

If you’re using social networks to find news about the things you’re interested in (yes, that includes Mastodon), it’s time to stop and use something that was actually made for that: RSS!

So I made a quick video about this old tech, and how it’s still the absolute best way of curating what you read, watch, receive, or listen to:

Odysee channel is now deleted. The comment I posted to let people know why was downvoted to oblivion, obviously, which basically censored it and made it impossible to read for people who came to the channel. The comments under it were getting more and more insane as well, so I shut down this clown show 😂

Finally, I took a look at NixOS, and the Nix package manager! And while I was very skeptical at first, after a week of use, it’s clear that this is an insanely powerful distribution, that is now at the very top of my list to replace Fedora on my editing rig.

Let’s see why, how it works, and why it’s so good, even though it won’t be for everyone:

Red Hat answered a lot of the concerns about their last move. Makes sense to me, reading this.
I’m not saying I totally agree with the move, but I understand why they’re doing it.

I keep seeing people online saying that isn’t ready for professionals, or that the Linux desktop isn’t for doing real work, or this usual « year of Linux desktop » meme.

So I thought I’d address the topic, because Linux is undeniably already being used by professionals all around the world, and definitely has a lot of tools to do professional work, either or proprietary:

Currently trying to clean up and maintain an old Windows 8 laptop, and I had forgotten how bad it is. Can’t uninstall multiple programs at once, every uninstall asks you to reboot, plus all the manufacturer bloatware, apps all update independently…

Windows 8 is truly awful to use.

I’ll try to update the device to Windows 10 at least, so it’s not completely unsupported.

After 2 years using the same desktop for editing, running and , I made a big switch:

  • first, I replaced both my desktop and my laptop with one single laptop for both use cases
  • I moved to plasma
  • I switched distros!

Here is the whole new setup, how I configured KDE, and how everything works!
