, , and are going on a North America tour! I've never bought a ticket for a show so fast. 2 legendary bands (formed in 1990 and 1989, respectively) and another that is relatively new to the scene, but who has already had a huge impact. "Air Not Meant for Us" from Fires was probably my favorite, most played release of 2023. This will be epic.

@craftyguy
They are playing at the Hawthorne Theater on Sept 20. I've only seen DT once, back in the Fiction days, IIRC. I don't really remember the show, but I'm looking forward to all three bands.

I found this amazing #synthwave (and adjacent genres) artist, #Caspro. You can purchase their entire bandcamp discography for like 10 bucks (22 releases, mostly full length albums!). Total ear candy. Easiest music purchase I've ever made in my life. Since most of this music is instrumental, I'll be jamming this while coding for the foreseeable future.

I know, Git is a mess. But, since we're stuck with it, we may as well try to learn how it works with resources like this, which aims to lead to some form of Git enlightenment.

@amoroso
That's a laudable effort.

My git workflow is minimalist and defensive. I know the fewest possible commands to get my work done, and I work defensively, so I merge and push my feature branch work upstream before merging in the latest. If things go sideways, all I have to do is nuke the folder and try again. I commit as little brain real-estate possible to Git and give it as few opportunities to fuck up my life as possible.

I finally decided to grow up and learn and dump as my . No shade on Reaper, it's a fabulous piece of proprietary software that runs well on . It's reasonably priced and highly functional. All things being equal, I'd rather use and support free software. So, when I got the point where I made my first export in Ardour, it asked me to become a subscriber, which I did, gladly, as the software works very well (for my purposes).

For API developers: what's your API versioning strategy?

Please respond with a description. A poll would be useless as there are as many versioning strategies as there are stars in the night sky.

A lot of people in the Redis community are now learning about the difference between permissive and copy-left licenses.

If you contribute code licensed with MIT or BSD, anyone can use that code in proprietary software, never release the source or modifications to it, and the only thing they owe you is publishing the BSD license text notice somewhere with the software. You still get attribution, but redis can absolutely legally do this.

thezerobit,
@thezerobit@anticapitalist.party avatar

@vwbusguy
I think people should consider contributing to BSD or similar style projects as implicitly gifting their code to every corporation in existence for their own private use. That way there is absolutely zero surprise when things like this happen.

thezerobit, to guitar
@thezerobit@anticapitalist.party avatar

Now is a good time to buy a guitar. People went crazy buying guitars during COVID and now they are dumping them at the same time that manufacturers have flooded the market, due to previous high demand. Also, guitars are cool as fuck. You can learn to strum a 3 or 4 chord song in a week and you are a sexy song person all of a sudden, a one-person music making heartthrob, a lonesome, lovelorn cowperson roaming the desert in bootcut jeans and a guitar strapped to your back.

thezerobit, to Redis
@thezerobit@anticapitalist.party avatar

Redis owns the code, they can do literally anything they want with it. The BSD version is there and can and already is being forked. Why are people complaining? Why do people feel like everything that Redis does to their branch of the code moving forward needs to be supplied for free to them under a permissive license? LMAO. Everyone seems entitled, but you can have the whole thing for free right now. There will be a community fork available forever.

    @fabio
    My opinion is that Redis can do whatever they want with their code. It's not going to cause any earthquakes. The latest BSD version will get forked and folks will move on. People can keep using the fork under a permissive license. Redis (the company) can try to make more money or whatever they are trying to do with the license change. I would say it's more of an "everybody wins" scenario.

    I hate Chromebooks. My kid has to use a school-issued one, and it sucks. If they are going to issue laptops to kids, they need to be ruggedized, and run fully open source software that can be wiped and reflashed easily. Files should be stored on servers (run by the public school system, not fucking Google), so the kids can log into any laptop and access their files. They need to be able to charge with standard barrel connectors, not delicate USB-C ports.

    thezerobit,
    @thezerobit@anticapitalist.party avatar

    Email and other services should be free/open source software run and maintained by the school district, not by Google or any other evil corporation. The software already exists, it just needs sysadmins to run and maintain the servers. Relying so heavily on Google (or any similar for-profit corporation) is bad for the kids, bad for society, and a huge danger and liability.

    people complaining about free software online again. software tools that they don't have to use at all, but exist for their use if they so choose. software that was written by volunteers and given away for free out of a sense of love and community. and people are like, "i don't know why this tool is so weird, I had to google how to use it and copy/paste from code from stackoverflow and it only saved me like 4 hours of work." and other people are like, "I'm so sorry that tool hurt your feelings"

    thezerobit,
    @thezerobit@anticapitalist.party avatar

    honestly, i don't know why people build stuff for others to use for free when this is how people respond. i don't know why, but this one today pushed me over the edge. i'm fucking done contributing to free software in my free time. free software we rely on should be publicly funded. no more free labor.

    i'll never know why people give away software under "liberal" licenses (MIT, BSD) that are used by for-profit enterprises who give nothing back

    AI and VR are in the news these days, it really feels like the 2010s and the 2000s and the 1990s and the 1980s all over again. Per usual, the AI is just a branding on algorithms (a.k.a. computer programs) that produce results that are a mockery of the term "intelligence". And while VR keeps getting better, it's something that most people don't give a shit about or is at best a curiosity. The primary audience for VR these days are porn addicts / Tesla owners.

    @apgarcia
    If you asked an intelligent person to write about the history of windows in ancient Rome, they probably wouldn't tell you that before the Romans had windows, they had MS DOS. An intelligent person understands the words they are using, how time works, etc. Words are just arbitrary symbols that are statistically connected to other words in systems like ChatGPT. There is no understanding, which to me is a mockery of intelligence.

    What should be considered "retro gaming"?

    thezerobit,
    @thezerobit@anticapitalist.party avatar

    @atomicpoet
    I went with "feeling" because "retro" is not a precise word and everyone feels differently about what is retro. I think playing a game made in a retro style can be considered "retro gaming" if it gives you a nostalgic feeling of playing a game in the past, even if the game was made this year. Gatekeeping is for people who are insecure. What feels like retro gaming to me, personally, is playing anything roughly 20+ years old, or in the style of a game that old.

    Inside the MAGA bubble, the economy is awful, no one has a job, and Biden is asleep.

    In the land of reality and statistics, the economy is doing well and Americans are better off. One reason why is that Democrats and Joe Biden are better at operating the country and it’s economy and pass good legislation that invests in workers and families as a whole.

    Biden has reneged completely on most of his campaign promises. Sure, Trump is worse, but why are we pretending that Americans are doing great under the blue capitalist party. There is a homeless camp outside my window. The wealth gap is increasing. Biden is serving the fossil fuel industry that is murdering the planet and he's helping Israel genocide Palestinians for chrissakes.
