::whispers:: Hey vendors, your difficulty in delivering our show specs because of your pipeline is not our problem.

We work all this out because everyone tries to give us what's easiest for them and it creates a nightmare conforming for DI and final.

And we do try to consider what's best for everyone. And we're not asking for wacky giant files.

Standardization is good.

tptigger,
@tptigger@starbase80.wtf avatar

@virtualbri ...
I suppose it's easier when it's in writing and everyone uses M$ Word, but you're the client why are they not following your specs?
I've been in-house for 5 years, but I would't think customer service 101 would change?

tptigger,
@tptigger@starbase80.wtf avatar

@virtualbri Ugh, sounds like a pain in the butt. I guess there is exactly one (1) advantage to Microsoft having a stranglehold on word processing--I know everyone can open the draft to review it.

Here's a good one: Phantom Menace Theatrical versus 4K release.

Does the digital noise reduction hammer the details, especially in faces? Is the new color shift to blue better? You decide

tptigger,
@tptigger@starbase80.wtf avatar

@virtualbri What that movie really needs is a better edit. I went to see it in the the theaters and it was OK, but dragged in the middle (the pod race especially). It's like Lucas divorced his editor between the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy or something... Oh, wait.

tptigger,
@tptigger@starbase80.wtf avatar

@virtualbri Yeah. It's completely unclear why Naboo (other than because that's where the emperor was from).
Honestly, I'm of the opinion that Lucas should've hired a writer and handed them an outline. He's an excellent idea man! He's not great at story structure and dialogue.

I don't...just no Apple. This is not the iPad take you want to be known for.

Destroying all these mostly tactile experiences for a tiny screen?

I love my iPad, but no....

@virtualbri Yeah, there are some things that you just want to be able to do.
It's probably not as pretty as squashing a bunch of CDs, DVDs, paper books, and video games I guess?

Anything to attack schools so they can mold them into their conservative-generating wastelands.

Believe it or not, antisemitism isn't the biggest problem with k-12 schools. No Congressional action on any of those things, except to make them worse.

tptigger,
@tptigger@starbase80.wtf avatar

@virtualbri I agree it's not, by any stretch of imagination the biggest thing, and let's be real, I don't trust the Republicans to actually fight antisemitism, but I moved in January and I'm scared to put up a mezuzah at my new place, so it IS a problem.

tptigger,
@tptigger@starbase80.wtf avatar

@virtualbri What makes me so frustrated is that so frequently protests will include horribly antisemitic chants, and when Jewish people say something, it is either a) ignored or b) outright denied. For any other group, there would be immediate apologies and dropping of the chants.
So if it seems like my back's a little far up, it's because of the last 7 months (plus) of sorting through who's antisemitic and who just doesn't know what they're saying.

J.K. Rowling also writes under a pen name of "Robert Galbraith", publishing over half a dozen titles under that name, most of which have TV adaptations.

Robert Galbraith Heath was the American Psychiatrist who pioneered Gay Conversion Therapy to convert homosexuals through electro-shock therapy.

https://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/judicial-conference-takes-action-on-judge-shopping-that-has-imbued-trump-appointees-with-massive-power

This is a pretty big deal; judge shopping is a nightmare with so many Trump appointed cranks who are hoping to take the government apart.

tptigger,
@tptigger@starbase80.wtf avatar

@virtualbri In fairness, Judge Shopping is a Tried and True Legal Practice (lots of people try to get their patent cases before This One Judge in Texas, for example). That said, it's not really a Net Good, so I'm glad they're cracking down on it.

tptigger,
@tptigger@starbase80.wtf avatar

@virtualbri So the new policy apparently lists patent law specifically (this popped up on my LinkedIn feed.) https://www.ipintelligencereport.com/blogs/the-end-of-judge-shopping-in-patent-cases/

tptigger,
@tptigger@starbase80.wtf avatar

@virtualbri I 99% agree, but also have seen the result of judges unfamiliar with patent law or the associated science and it leads to headaches when trying to draft the things. :) (I could rant a lot about SCOTUS but I'll spare you. :) )

Needing the Mac version of Keynote to re-set a fricking video thumbnail is annoying....

Especially when you discover that after you've finished the presentation. I don't want to remake it in Powerpoint just for that one bit of cleanup.

tptigger,
@tptigger@starbase80.wtf avatar

@virtualbri I had to give in and get Office for my new job hunt--do not get me started on weirdness. (I hate M$, I will deal with Office for work, but I feel awful putting it on my poor Mac)

tptigger,
@tptigger@starbase80.wtf avatar

@virtualbri Yeah, the Numbers app is annoying comparatively, but given that outside of work the only thing I use it for is budgeting... wasn't worth it. However, given that everyone wants .docx resumes, well, having a version of Word seemed prudent.

Sheer disrespect.

Email I just received:

"I write to ask if I may send you a carefully thought-out and prepared, four-page synopsis, of a science-fiction book/movie idea which, I believe, could, if taken up by a Pro writer, result in a best-seller sci-fi blockbuster book, leading, in turn, to a blockbuster movie."

Never actually gotten one of these before. I thought they were mythical.

tptigger,
@tptigger@starbase80.wtf avatar

@charliejane People do that? Yikes.
I thought the people sending unsolicited fic ideas in the AO3 comments was annoying.
(I'd like to say I'm never again going to not send a resume to a job that I think I'm only borderline qualified for, but I kinda know myself...)

    What are people supposed to do if they don't have smart phones? (I know that's fewer than there used to be, but it's still a non-zero number)
    (Worse, there are a few people who don't have credit cards or even debit cards, or bank accounts, which is its own headache. Of course, given the givens, they may not even be able to fly these days.)

    tptigger,
    @tptigger@starbase80.wtf avatar

    @glynmoody You could blame Apple for stealing the tech and infringing the patents rather than licensing the tech from the patent holder in the first place.
    They could probably give the patent holder a decent royalty and settle, but they're being cheap.
    The problem isn't the patents, it's capitalism

    Thoughts on my first play of . Reminder I've only played it solo.

    1. The place/retrieve mechanism is implemented in a way I haven't seen in other games in my collection. Typically in worker placement you get your workers back once you run out. In Apiary when you retrieve workers, they "level up." I definitely handled this wrong and will need to retrieve more often in future

    2. Bumping workers as well as the actions where you add your value to already played workers is very cool
