This new iPad Pro is fantastic. Very happy with it. Except it’s also not a MacBook Air. All this power and this 3 legged OS. Stage Manager is a weak simulacrum of a window manager. Please unify these operating systems.

travis,

@phranck @shanselman Sadly, every year the “iOS-ification” of macOS continues. I expect we’ll see something else major ported over this summer and lose something else that made macOS unique and fun.

@shanselman Now we just need Windows XP… anything to help out become more stable!

Be careful reading @9to5Mac without an adblocker. I just got several scamware redirects like the one shown. Time to remove some sites from my RSS feed because they also show truncated articles.

@9to5linux @9to5Mac Good to know! They’re definitely tainting any site labeled “9 to 5”

@jwf Even more scary: what if this was in proprietary software and someone went “huh this is odd” and the company ignored the bug report completely until it was more widespread. If even at all.

travis, to Redis
@travis@nodespace.social avatar

So Redis is no longer open source... well, it is, but it's no longer BSD licensed. It's now licensed under a Greed License: "You can't use the software if you make money unless we also make money." Naturally, there is fork of the last BSD licensed version: https://codeberg.org/redict/redict

melroy, to Redis
@melroy@mastodon.melroy.org avatar

Redis changed to dual license. I'm migrating to Dragonfly! Even if I'm not personally hit by this, it's not longer truly open-source, so I exit Redis. Moreover, Dragonfly is also much more performant.

@melroy I’m going to wait and see which fork/project becomes dominant. There’s so many right now.

This Usher performance is terrible. He sings two lines from a song then runs out of breath, then jumps to the next song.

travis,

@khalidabuhakmeh He’s old. Because these songs were played when I was in middle school and high school, and I’m old and I get the same way when I dance and sing with my daughter 😂

One of the dumbest things Microsoft has done in a while. No, we don't want a Copilot button. Even Apple gave up on the Apple key a long time ago. https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2024/01/04/introducing-a-new-copilot-key-to-kick-off-the-year-of-ai-powered-windows-pcs/

@melroy As long as it stays on Microsoft keyboards… so they can age like this one with Internet Explorer, My Computer, and that sleep key I always hit.

I just got the most dystopian YouTube ad. It's made using an AI to sound like Donald Trump warning everyone that America is about to be attacked and the food supply will be destroyed. The link just goes to some weird website selling meal rations 🥴

@thisismissem @malwaretech Google won’t even stop fake download button ads that distribute malware. As long as the credit card charges, Google doesn’t care sadly.

CES is less "consumer" unless B2B is now defined as "consumer"

travis,
@travis@nodespace.social avatar

@geerlingguy Given what I've seen, it's a mix of experimental tech that won't exist next year (or even 5 years) and tech geared towards businesses. Like on Instagram, I saw a demo of a Bobcat front loader with some screen overlay for construction. I can only count on 3 fingers the number of "average consumers" I know who own a Bobcat. And I don't need all 3 fingers.

New year, new goals! It seemed odd to me that as a tech company, I was still buying paper business cards. When details change or cards run out, I have to buy another batch. No more! We’re going digital! This means going to events we have unlimited cards! The QR code uses our own URL redirect system so if where we host the virtual cards changes, it’s easy to update. We will still have some traditional business cards, but they’ll be generic.

Coming up in February: 24.2, our next big update, with many new features! (And a new "year.month" version scheme, to make it clear when it was released.) The first Beta version is now available for testing: https://qa.blog.documentfoundation.org/2023/12/13/libreoffice-24-2-beta1-is-available-for-testing/

@zleap @libreoffice It’s year.month. 24 = 2024; 2 = February. We live in an age now where version numbers are dying.

My #Lenovo Thinkpad just got a firmware update to address a CVE in "jerryscript" - a javascript engine that appears to be oriented towards raspberry Pi's and hasn't had a release in nearly 3 years.

I'm afraid to ask, but why is there #Javascript in my laptop's BIOS firmware?

UPDATE: I am bad at Google'ing CVEs! The CVE details aren't released yet: https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2023-5058
