"A new project to resume development on the formerly open-source Redis project. We're calling it #Valkey, since it's a twist on the key-value datastore."
Never quite worked up the impetus to attend or present at @linuxfoundation conferences since they struck me as a bit too "corporate". Now it's looking justified ☹️
I don't mind reform, but please be honest about it.
Hmmm ... What open source issue was I just looking at with #Microsoft involved... Oh yes, the whole #Redis mess. Just literally only a couple of days after I was talking with Microsoft reps at an #OpenSource conference.
Today more companies are announcing their support of the Valkey community (the group that includes committed developers previously working on the OSS version of the core Redis engine): Aiven, Alibaba Cloud, Chainguard, Heroku, Huawei, Percona, and Verizon.
The Valkey community is announcing their first source code release: version 7.2.5. Now available for download from GitHub and usable via the project's official Docker image.
The new #redis website has broken so many links. Some redirect to their new corresponding urls, but not all of them, and it's very hard to find anything in their new marketing-focused website 😩
The whole Redis fiasco has resulted in Valkey emerging which will likely leave Redis behind with MongoDB and MySQL which were also taken over by companies which tried to monetize them. Long story short, a VC back company assumed control of the Redis project which was Open Source and promised the project creator to keep it that way, but broke that promise. It has been forked and major cloud companies are funding the fork which is called Valkey. #Redis#Valkey
We now understand why permissive #licensing is bad for #FOSS.
#Redis taught us why #GPL is important and #MIT, #Apache, #BSD etc allow corporations to enclose and steal our contributions.
#Israel's use of #Lavender for targeting in #Gaza, which may also use the code we donated to the commons, shows that we need to be more restrictive if we want to avoid assisting war crimes and probable #genocide.
I hope some lawyers are on this, and will help us add exclusions to protect from such use.
