I reckon Copilot+ PC is going to be a product that an entire class of professional just simply can't purchase or use for work. Thinking of , , etc.

Surely the "features" will be able to be disabled, but can anyone reasonably trust that?

@andrew

There's very little discussion around locally hosted LLMs working on private data - but such exist. Sure, they're not as capable as the ones running in huge datacenters, but they're still very useful and everything is kept private just as regular document are kept on internal networks.

Our commitment to the fediverse is here to stay.

Today, we launched our new Mastodon instance. It will ensure a privacy-focused space to engage with and get the latest from our Commissioners, departments, and the official voices of the Commission.

We want to thank @Mastodon for stewarding us and helping us make this possible.

Fostering European digital players is vital to our strategy for a stronger #DigitalEU.

This is a unique opportunity to grow the community even more. Let's get there!

troed,
@troed@sangberg.se avatar

@EUCommission

So instead of a general EU instance at "social.network.europa.eu" there's now a single instance for the European Commission only at "ec.social-network.europa.eu"?

I'm happy that you're still here, but wow that seems like a waste of resources. Running the instance for the EC only is no more work than running one at one level higher for all of the EU institutions :(

By details, Merchan asks, more than just "we had sex"? Yes, Necheles says.

Trivia - this would constitute rape in Sweden. No need to explicitly say no, it's enough that there was no clear consent expressed.

@anderspuck What do you think about the Russian announcement today of a drill with tactical nuclear weapons?

troed,
@troed@sangberg.se avatar

@shuro

... and that's why everybody needs to remember that tactical nuclear weapons have absolutely nothing in common with the big old strategic weapons of old ;) ("Tsar Bomba" etc)

Besides being "nuclear" and thus people imagine the end of the world rather than what's in effect not much different from the big convential weapons already in use.

BridgyFed for the Fediverse should post as threads if the post exceeds 300 characters. Now it just truncates 500 char posts and people have no idea about the rest of it without any link or context. I know it’s early, but this would be great. @snarfed.org@snarfed.org

The EU is abandoning its Mastodon project.

I had thought the main way Mastodon could develop into a major social media was by attracting bodies who want to respect EU law and similar regulation. If even the EU institutions themselves don't prioritise it, then that's another nail in the coffin.

@Loukas "especially considering the limited resources at our disposal. Unfortunately, despite our efforts to find a new home for EU Voice and EU Video in other EUIs, we have been unable to secure new ownership to maintain the servers"

Seems to be nothing more than a funding issue though.

troed,
@troed@sangberg.se avatar

@Loukas Most often something like this is a not a political decision but a department not getting funds. I've asked a friend who works for one of the groups in the parliament, let's see if he can dig something out.

troed,
@troed@sangberg.se avatar

@kallekn

Varför tror du total seger är omöjligt? Det är Ryssland, inte Ukraina, som lider brist på materiel.

@Loukas @MichaelGentile

troed,
@troed@sangberg.se avatar

@kallekn

@Loukas @MichaelGentile

troed,
@troed@sangberg.se avatar

@Loukas

Rysslands produktionskapacitet är väldigt mycket lägre än materialförlusterna.

Glöm inte att vi pratar om ett land som är stort till ytan men i övrigt "litet". Det gäller även industri.

Happened to see this just now. Tell me why this is wrong.

Conventional wisdom holds that a negotiated end to the Ukraine war is neither possible nor desirable. This belief is false.
It is also extremely dangerous for Ukraine’s future. The war is not trending toward a stable stalemate, but toward Ukraine’s eventual collapse.
Ukraine’s best hope lies in a negotiated settlement that protects its security and promotes broader stability in Europe and the world.

Russia is not able to manufacture arms and munitions to keep fighting as long as Ukraine gets support.

Turbines use wind from passing traffic to generate electricity

Such a device can also be installed in places that are unsuitable for traditional turbines. The first such wind turbines were installed in Istanbul: they generate electricity using air turbulence created by traffic.

The ENLIL vertical turbine was developed by Istanbul Technical University and technology firm Devecitech

Exactly this. Increasing CO2 emissions which, due to losses, outweigh the energy gained from the turbine.

No engineers were involved in this project ...

nothing ruins my motivation to send fixes to your open source project more than to ask me to sign a CLA for it.

sorry guys I'm just not that interested in reviewing a legal contract just to improve your software for free

troed,
@troed@sangberg.se avatar

@hailey Well, it actually isn't "for free" if the fix would include code to be copyrightable. That would then place a future burden on the open source project.

Also: Investigating whether the fix is copyrightable or not takes time (= cost)

Thus, the only possible solution an open source project has is to ask contributors to sign a CLA.
