@baldur Well we know how to create electricity with minimal environmental damage though? While crypto is largely unregulated (I think Bitcoin is at 50% renewables) the large AI firms can definitely be motivated to make sure they only use solar, nuclear, wave, wind etc.

Something seems off with the wordpress.com ActivityPub integration. When I (and others) check my blog profile (@blog.troed.se@blog.troed.se) on Mastodon, while it displays, there's also a brief error 500 popping up. That seems to then mean that it's not possible to read/comment on the blog.

The FediFetcher script also reports errors when trying to fetch posts from the wordpress.com profiles:

@pfefferle @michael Indeed! The 404 is gone - FediFetcher now says:

2023-10-12 17:04:10.459431 CEST: server api unknown for public-api.wordpress.com, cannot fetch user posts

... which I understand is correct since it needs the Mastodon API.

The error 500 is still there in Mastodon web UI though, so it had another cause.

@augieray The article I linked contains also our Nordic neighbours. They are part of Europe.

By looking at total surplus deaths over the course of the pandemic any differences in attribution of cause of death disappears.

"Tried it, but I don't get it and it feels weird" is the number one comment I receive on X when I talk about Mastodon. And it kinda irritates me sometimes while I understand the different domains can be confusing and the whole "learning new" thing is scary in this life.

@rolle I signed up at BlueSky (to point people who search for me there, here) and I must admit I really like their "pick your interests from the following lists" thing.

If I had the intention of running a Mastodon server for more than the immediate family I would be working on implementing such things. A lot of very techie and knowledgeable people I know have signed up for Mastodon and simply haven't had the interest/energy to put time into getting a good feed.

Not their fault - they're not getting any help from the system.

I constantly hear "Mastodon looks clumsy" as a reason why X people don't get excited. This is why I for one have focused in making my instance feel good and familiar. The problem is, it's not like this everywhere. It's not consistent. It would be fun to see something more modern in the Mastodon core in the future. After all, Mastodon is the most viable "Twitter alternative" of them all.

If I were to suggest Firefish or Akkoma, most people would be shocked. Mastodon is "almost there". People get in, but then give up. Mastodon should attract more than just a certain type of nerds. This is why it needs more work FROM us, the nerds.

@rolle Agree looks help. However, to attract "the general public" I'm certain "You might be interested in" algorithms are needed.

They can be instance specific. And possible to turn off even on those instances.

I learned I had no idea what "normal weather" was in a historical context. I don't know if it says anything about tornados though - but it's amazing reading.

Dåliga nyheter …

Jag har haft cancer i fyra år och betat av ett antal behandlingar. Tills de relevanta tog slut. Då fick jag en sista bättre-än-ingenting-behandling. Nu visar den senaste röntningsomgången tillväxt. Då har även den behandlingen gjort sitt och avslutas.

Nu övergår vården till ett annat läge: Istället för att försöka förbättra det medicinska, fokuserar man på att hålla mig på humör, med smärtlindring och sånt. Pallativ vård, som det heter. Därhän har det kommit.

@rahmstorf I think there's a real problem with spreading an image of the IPCC reports as not being reliable.

Also, RCP 8.5 turned out to be a huge failure. That's something people latch on to.

@georgetakei I was at Web 2.0 Summit in 2008, where O'Reilly had invited Gore for a couch talk on the opening stage.
