Ensiesittelyssä Somekone — sosiaalisen median toiminnan helposti ja hauskasti esittelevä sovellus opetuskäyttöön. Kyseessä on Generation AI-hankkeemme hedelmä, josta olen kyllä tosi innoissani.

First INTERNATIONAL law on AI. Don’t dismiss what China, Australia, Brasil, & others have achieved. But not only is the #AIAct big in itself. It, the #DSA the #DMA, & yes the #GDPR are important first steps to how we can ALL regulate transnational entities https://video.consilium.europa.eu/event/en/27283

troos,

@dimillian @nojhan @j2bryson I’ve been a wholehearted fan of the idea(l) of Mastodon as open-source, non-commercial platform, but I’m starting to seriously lose faith. I’ve tried my best here, switched servers, used hashtags, and other recommended tricks, but the engagement is almost zero… Even LinkedIn is about 50 times more active, and Twitter was about 100 more so. Well, at least it’s not too addictive.

  • troos,

@dcm @deshipu @UlrikeHahn I admit that I’m unable to grasp what you mean by characterization of a phenomenon, since I see that you draw a distinction between it and a definition. Can you give an example?

    troos,

@dcm @deshipu @UlrikeHahn Indeed, we may define ”knowledge” differently. I was using the term in a rather narrow sense to refer to a collection of facts, which can be true or not. A definition cannot be true or false – even less a fuzzy one! – so I counted definitions as non-knowledge. This is not to say that definitions wouldn’t be useful. Just like language (including names of various birds)

    troos,

@deshipu @UlrikeHahn That’s exactly the way I read it. In a similar vein, here’s the well-known story about bird names not constituting knowledge (about birds) by Feynman in his own words: https://youtu.be/px_4TxC2mXU?si=ihbBkheSLBdB-Q87

    troos,

@UlrikeHahn @deshipu Fair point. To me (not a cogn. scientist), it feels more productive to investigate how humans think instead of negotiating the semantics of (explicating) words like ”think” (cf. Feynman on bird names)

I’ll always remember a diligent student who was writing his MSc thesis. All was well until suddenly we heard nothing in a week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks. Still nothing. After two months we got hold of him. He’d gotten stuck trying to define ”definition”!

    troos,

@dcm @deshipu @UlrikeHahn Good point! Names are not the issue here, so the reference to Feynman is not quite to the point. It’s rather the other part of a definition. What I mean is that if a definition involves i) specifying the scope of a concepts or a phenomenon, and ii) giving a name for it, then I’d still maintain that neither of these constitute knowledge about the phenomenon itself.

    troos,

@dcm @deshipu @UlrikeHahn I see, thanks. In that case, I’m tempted to say that a characterization, i.e., a ”fuzzy definition”, is no different from an actual definition in the sense that neither of them constitute any knowledge. Would you disagree?

    troos,

@UlrikeHahn @dcm @deshipu Possibly. Although I tend work a lot on applications in various fields from neuroscience to astrophysics and from epidemiology to anthropology, so I’ve worked on both sides of that fence…

Brand new Finnish Olkiluoto 3 nuclear reactor unexpectedly dropped off grid on 19 November, and Nordpool energy prices spiked as a result not only in Finland but across entire Baltic region. Building several smaller units instead of the 1600 MW monster (10-20% of the daily usage in Finland) might've been wiser in retrospect..

    troos,

@themaklin Slightly off-topic but I find it impossible to tell which curve is which. The lines are so thin and the colors so similar. @jhilden, pls tell us how this should be fixed!

Update: Thanks and I'm starting to think it's not actually in the house. Will continue in AM.

tl;dr new iPhone 12 not yet set up.

I set it down somewhere in the house, and after hours of looking I can't find it. I still have the old iphone and it's working fine. I didn't transfer the sim card yet. Find my iphone is off.

The new iphone has plenty of battery life and is connected to wifi.

How can I find it in the house? Make it beep, use the old one for homing? Etc.

Curious how your computer creates and preserves this digital microhistory of past visited wifis. Like these here, a bunch of networks used on a trip to Iceland back in 2016. This was even with a different computer.

    troos,

@jhilden I remember seeing reports that many devices were broadcasting SSIDs of all networks that you had ever visited (and not deleted from the device settings) when probing for known networks to connect to, which would reveal all this info to everyone around you. Which is just mad.

However, it seems this privacy issue has apparently been fixed in more recent OS versions: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/wifi-probing-exposes-smartphone-users-to-tracking-info-leaks/
