I've been told people on this website enjoy me trying to think through computer problems out loud while in incredible pain, so good news: I'm taking my new Thinkpad T14 (https://mastodon.social/@mcc/111218408629532857) out of the box and I'm going to install Linux on it first thing. So expect a LOT of complaining.

Me, 2022: I have all these USB sticks and I can never remember what's in what. My label maker makes labels too big to fit on them, so I'll just label them with the first letter of what I put on them, and it will be easy to remember which is which later

Me, 2023: What the fuck do these labels mean

@mcc is there a QR code printer? that would be cool, could just upload a quick text file about it with that little square to scan

tsrono,
@tsrono@mastodon.social avatar

@gmr_leon i have no clue, but i would think something could be worked out for that...could be cool for sure. i'm no programmer/coder, i couldn't even begin to know but i could see it being useful yeah

Okay, looks like everything's moved over now! If you're reading this I successfully moved my followers over to my new Fediverse account. The new account has the same name and is on the same instance but it's in the parallel universe where "The Matrix" starred Keanu Reeves instead of Will Smith

Finished foundation season 2. The second half improves, but it’s still absolutely terrible. The writing is so bad, I was laughing at half the scenes. Character deaths were made meaningless by the ham-fisted dialogue and Cotillard-like performances. It’s the realm of Deus Ex Machina and coincidences, instead of celebrating the agency of 1 person to impact the whole future.

It missed what the book was about, turning it into stories about individuals. Season 1 was far better!

tsrono,
@tsrono@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP this makes me feel better about giving up after the first few episodes in season 1. it looked like it was on a broken track already...if you think S1 was better than S2? yikes, v glad i didn't spend anymore minutes watching 😆

tsrono,
@tsrono@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP @downtofunctional and some good acting and visuals in the little i saw! but if the story, characters, and overall plot is offputting, i just can't get personally invested really. at least some interesting (if not entirely successful) sci-fi is getting made.

Hey y'all take note today is "Bandcamp Friday", meaning if you buy music on Bandcamp it's a 0% cut for the company:

https://mastodon.social/@mcc/109803030169696732

And importantly this is POSSIBLY THE FINAL BANDCAMP FRIDAY, as new owners Songtradr have not made it clear if they're continuing it. (So "get your orders in now.")

Also not clear: whether Songtradr will be busting Bandcamp's union. So please follow @bandcampunited and if you're a customer please sign their petition https://union.place/@bandcampunited/111178966616050916

i've very slowly pieced together a simple website at https://tsrono.blot.im which features nothing special yet & is certainly incomplete.

this has been done in part to try & provide a backup source for my music, in case, well, who knows? lots of uncertainty on the internet the last years.

tsrono,
@tsrono@mastodon.social avatar

creating things like this (even with LOTS of online help & a framework provided by the blot service) ain't easy but it is interesting.

anyway:

tsrono,
@tsrono@mastodon.social avatar

@Metamere i could never manage the building from scratch, i'm just not versed nor interested in being versed in the coding side of things. when i found blot a few years ago i was glad how much hand-holding their service is doing, perfect for me! & very affordable. i'll let y'all more tech-minded have fun with the from-scratch stuff like you mention 😅

if i start hosting lots of tunes there i might have to reassess costs/etc. but for now i'm very happy with my little site.

It is getting increasingly awkward that my only daily drivers are a Win10 machine and a laptop based on antiquated MacOS. I should get a simple Linux laptop.

Last time I tried to do this though it turned out any laptops that run Linux with full hardware support out of the box are pretty expensive.

tsrono,
@tsrono@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc Framework are doing good things with their laptops. there’s a few other brands that have good marks from all i’ve seen but i’ve never taken the Linux plunge so this is all outsider perspective

WHY DID YOU BUY BANDCAMP IF YOU WERE JUST GOING TO SELL IT 18 MONTHS LATER?!

https://www.cnbc.com/2023/09/28/epic-games-is-eliminating-16percent-of-its-workforce-and-selling-bandcamp.html

I trusted Epic not to screw up Bandcamp, but I don't have any idea who these new owners are. I have very little emotional attachment to Epic. If Epic winds up being the motive agent by which Bandcamp gets transitioned from a healthy standalone company and social space to a dead mall, that will be an evil that outstrips everything good they've ever done from my perspective

tsrono,
@tsrono@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc https://resonate.coop/coop/ has been trying for a few years but it seems to be pretty mild in its interest, features, & reach. i’ve got a couple of albums up there still i believe but i haven’t checked in for probably a year.

tsrono,
@tsrono@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc it’s been all full of awkward since day one :/ & last i checked you had to have money in the system to give anything a full listen, as it starts deducting cash based on listen quantities….so that’s a HUGE hurdle to get anyone even poking their head in.

i remember some emails about potential changes but haven’t yet reviewed or familiarized myself with it again. looks like that’s a good idea to do right now.

tsrono,
@tsrono@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc it’s “fair” but it’s complicated.

tsrono,
@tsrono@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc as someone who sells music i would agree wholeheartedly with that.

tsrono,
@tsrono@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc thank you Andi ☺️ it’s always available for free with a DM if anyone needs/prefers, but support is appreciated. i’m not trying to make a living with it like many are so i just like that it’s shared & enjoyed mostly :)

@ZachWeinersmith comments are limited there i think.

i was going to ask is there ever to be a leveling off of the economics/logistical side of living on Mars? sometimes there’s a huge investment then things start to become better for pricing/etc. over time. idk if that would apply to something like actually living on another planet in any significant way.

@mcc i've never played this game, don't care about speedrunning in the least, but am enthralled nonetheless. and curiously i'm getting big LK-99 vibes from the whole thing (not in the sense that this is incorrect/false)

tsrono,
@tsrono@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc lol wow. speedrunning really is some kind of science or another. experimentation & reproduction of results to test the boundaries of the 'world'....& if it works in that world, it must work in this other since they follow many of the same fundamentals. not sure i've made that connx before.

I'm giving a public talk next week:

• Life's struggle to survive. Tuesday September 26, 6 pm UK time. Room G.03 on the ground floor of the Bayes Centre, 47 Potterrow, Edinburgh.

When pondering our future amid global warming, it is worth remembering how we got here. Even after it got started, the success of life on Earth was not a foregone conclusion! In this talk I recount some thrilling, chilling episodes from the history of our planet. For example: our collision with the planet Theia, the "snowball Earth events" when most of the oceans froze over, and the asteroid impact that ended the age of dinosaurs. Some are well-documented, others only theorized, but pondering them may give us some optimism about the ability of life to survive crises.

To attend in person, get a free ticket here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/lifes-struggle-to-survive-leverhulme-lecture-tickets-707700620607

Refreshments will be served after the lecture. If you actually show up, say hi!

If you can't join us, fear not: I should be able to put a recording of the talk on my YouTube channel eventually. And you can see the slides here now:

http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/struggle/

If you find mistakes in them or just have questions, please let me know! I'm still polishing the slides - and the more questions I field now, the more prepared I'll be when it comes time to give the actual talk.

tsrono,
@tsrono@mastodon.social avatar

@johncarlosbaez not long to review but slide 3 graph/s are a bit confusing. multiple colors, overlaps, varying scale from one portion to another....
overall a great subject for discussion.

tsrono,
@tsrono@mastodon.social avatar

@johncarlosbaez always hard to know the context when seeing slides/etc… but if you’re going to spend a lot of time with it i’m sure you’ve thought it through! just jumped out as not instantly clear at a first glance from my new set of eyes seeing it.
