Heard some fabulous pop music waiting for a takeout burger. Is neo-soul a thing? Only heard the exit chorus, a singer drowned by a vast gospel choir, every upper-range instrument clear through the mix, even in a noisy shop with ceiling speakers. I never listen to pop music so had no idea who that was, but it was a production masterpiece, plainly expensive, with a groove that's stuck with me all evening. May never know, but I was there and it was fine.

@StarlingW pop/r&b/soul production is often top notch highest quality stuff. always interesting to listen for those reasons alone, lots of great stuff in there just composition/performance-wise as well tho.

TLDR: You follow 40 people, but the people who post infrequently tend to get their posts flooded off the TL by high-volume accounts such as me (mcc) asking cursed C# questions at odd hours. @mcc there's some meme about 'me consuming 3 different types of media at once so that a stray thought can't come into my mind' that this feels not far from...replace work with consuming media, i guess.

they're similar to me at least in that i'm often 'working' on music in the background while watching videos or reading or scrolling or whatever else. not as intense usually as most programming/speedrunning, for sure...

Re https://mastodon.social/@mcc/111942941850295662 : Last time I linked a Max Sansalone video he'd run the drums through a stompbox, and this video sounds like it has a slight bitcrush effect on the cymbals, so I was going to make a comment about how he filtered the audio a little to give it a sort of crackle like lo-fi samplers would add to the Amen. Then I realized no! The "bitcrush" effect is entirely acoustic. It's caused by the bells hanging off the ride cymbal. He explains it here: https://youtu.be/dMfxAbNGyXs?t=144

@mcc he does seem to have some heavy compression on at least one of the mics (likely done in post?) used that’s giving even his vocals a little washy sound so i’m not certain that everything of that rain sound is 100% acoustic. speculative tho.

@mcc i thought that stuff had come from a Twitch stream he did a few times back around ‘21/‘22? i could be misremembering tho, i never payed a hell of a lot of attention to that behind the scenes stuff, it felt a bit weird to me. there was definitely a lot of stuff shared on Twitch streams around that era as well tho. would tag him here but not sure he cares to track all that info just for posterity’s sake. cool shit tho
