Imagine a Scrabble set which has been messed with such it has only 48 "A" tiles, 32 "N" tiles and 16 "B" tiles, so that the only words it is possible to spell are "An", "Ban", and "Banana". Does this simplify the game to the point where it is "solvable", IE, it is possible to devise a universally optimal strategy/AI/gameplay decision tree?

I rented a car and the rear view mirror is not a mirror at all but rather is a tiny LED screen showing the output of a camera. This is actually fucking terrible because I have no idea where the camera is, therefore I have no idea where this notional "mirror" is meant to be in space and therefore I cannot gauge distances, normally one of the main things you look into a rear view mirror to do

@mcc my Quadraverb has plastic buttons that respond to the pressure put onto it…(somehow still working after ~25 years or whatever) and i imagine some car design intern doofus has proposed one of these on the steering wheel at some point. “so like while you turn you can also just be using your hands to increase or decrease speed! it frees up your right foot to do all kinds of right foot tasks needed while going 70mph down an interstate!”

he does seem to make clear it can be awkward in some instances, breaking while turning/etc…but relatively, it works better than i’d have imagined.

Nuclear take: We should transition from large nuclear reactors centrally serving large regions to many small nuclear reactors distributed in the municipalities where the electricity is to be used, because smaller reactors are each individually easier to make safe

@mcc Instagram has a toggle for 'following' and 'favorites' so i guess besties would be akin to favorites? i don't use it but that sort of tiered system for socials makes some sense.

@mcc as someone who’s listened to the 2014/2015 set(s) dozens of times, i can confirm this is the correct way to think about such a seemingly huge undertaking.

many sections are entirely different portions as well, not just different ‘versions’ of each portion (track/song)…so it’s like each time you listen to ‘the album’ there’s entirely different ‘tracks’ on it that maybe you haven’t heard in quite some time.

Three minor feature frustrations with Mastodon that never get better:

  • Lack of a choice between chronological and "relevance" when searching. I search my own posts a lot & now I have a year and a half of history it's REAL hard to find stuff if I can't search chronologically.

  • When replies to a post are shown, you can't "collapse" or sort down sub-replies. If a post explodes such that subthreads spawn the replies become unreadable. It would be nice to be able to say "hide non-direct replies".

@mcc i like hashtags, i think they're useful, but not terribly so (& of course useful could be useful to bad actors but that's a different convo maybe...).
the small gray unobtrusive hashtags is kinda how Tumblr does them. using them in that sense gets towards the 'keywords' usage for general internet searching, doesn't it? (i'm not an html-er by any means but i believe that's basically how they at least used to work...)

Anyway there was a time when I thought it was okay to just have a Facebook account, park it, use it for IM or whatevs, and then there was this awful experience when FB first forced me to merge my FB account with my Oculus account before allowing (requiring?) separating the two again, but by that point it was too late, I'd already deleted everything so it wouldn't be associated with my (work) Oculus account. So in conclusion I just don't think it's safe to have any account on a FB-owned service.

Why is almost no one in the world talking about ?

Elites aren't talking about it because profits from increased consumption is what drives their policies.

Progressives aren't talking about it, rightfully arguing that the vast majority of Earth's population is NOT responsible for current problems.

Tho, wishing justice, or pretending it'll magically somehow prevail, isn't stopping the problems from skyrocketing; it's just escapism.

If you're into that, does it better 😬

@65dBnoise all true! discussions about overpopulation quickly turn towards those darkest aspects of societal worries tho…it’s kind of inevitable with the topic, i think. that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be discussed of course, but it’s always going to be a very unnerving conversation.
