Irene Pepperberg's theory is that parrots do not learn words by hearing the word in proximity to an event, rather they learn words by hearing flock members use a word during an interaction with another flock member https://mastodon.social/@JoeKozinski/112394735459907294

Decided to try making a higher-quality encode of the "music video" I made and uploading it to Vimeo. Discovered Vimeo now has a "weekly limit" of 500MB upload unless you upgrade to a pay tier, which effectively means it is totally impossible to ever upload a video of larger than 500MB unless you pay. Even the "just okay" encode was 720 MB. (The high quality one, which I'm not sure I picked efficient settings for, is like 3GB.)

tsrono,
@tsrono@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc you'd think they could offer a lowcost tier for a combo of rare HQ uploads & more common LQ uploads, something like that for just a couple bucks a month might attract more casual users

@TruthSandwich got me interested in the vibrational modes of bells. They're not harmonics with frequencies 1, 2, 3, 4, ... times the lowest frequency: they're much more complicated! That's why bells sound clangy. This chart shows how they sometimes work.

The lowest frequency vibrations are called:

• the 'hum' (the lowest frequency)

• the 'prime' (with frequency roughly 2 times that of the hum)

• the 'tierce' (roughly 2.4 times the hum, so a minor third above the prime)

• the 'quint' (roughly 3 times the hum, so a major fifth above the prime)

• the 'nominal' (roughly 4 times the hum, so an octave above the prime)

and so on. If you think these names are illogical, join the club! One reason it's tricky is that the loudest vibration is not the lowest one: it's the 'prime'.

The numbers I just gave you should be taken with a big grain of salt. They really depend on the shape of the bell, and you'd have to be great at designing bells to make them come out as shown here. It's not like a violin string or flute, where the math is on your side.

This quote helps explain the chart:

"Modern theory separates the modes of vibration into those produced by the "soundbow" and those produced by the remaining bell "shell". The bell vibrates both radially and axially and the principal vibrational modes are shown in the diagram together with their classification using the scheme proposed by Perrin et al. This scheme consists of the mode of vibration (RIR - Ring Inextensional Radial, RA - Ring Axial, R=n - Shell driven), the number of meridians (where “m” is half the number of meridians) and the number of nodal circles (n)."

Starting to sound like orbitals in quantum mechanics!

@johncarlosbaez this bit caught my interest "It is believed that some medieval founders cast eccentrically shaped bells so that the frequency pairs were so far apart they would not beat." but the cited paper (Group Theory and The Bell, Journal of Sound and Vibration (1973) 31:411-418. R. Perrin, T Charnley.) seems to be paywalled everywhere.

Joe Biden just banned Tik Tok.

https://www.cnbc.com/2024/04/24/biden-signs-israel-ukraine-tiktok-bill-into-law.html

If America can do this to Tik Tok, America can and will do it to whatever internet thing it is you like just as easily. Don't imagine China itself was the point of this. (The ban[s] cover ByteDance plus any company 20%+ owned within a country on this short list https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/10/4872#:~:text=metals%20and%20alloys.-,(2)Covered%20nation,-.%E2%80%94The%20term but given how easily this passed it seems a precedent is set for Congress to add whatever other company, organization or country it feels like to the list.)

tsrono,
@tsrono@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc interested if you’ve got a read on what the point is…you’re stating you don’t think China is the point, but if it’s not China, & TikTok technically could still exist here after sale of the American version’s operations to another company besides ByteDance…then i’m not sure what that leaves as ‘the point’

you’re insinuating control of software (which very wel may be the case!) but taking on TikTok seems a big swing with guaranteed pushback, seems a bad strategy out of the gate.

I twice made, then deleted, a post about the Tik Tok ban being signed into law. I deleted it the first time because the bill was less bad than I described the first time and deleted it the second time because it was worse than I described the second time. I made myself a promise I wouldn't try to do like real-time Posting About Politics on Mastodon and I'm kinda breaking my rules.

However I'm really, really angry about this bill so I will make a third attempt

tsrono,

@mcc @msbellows i’m curious to see how the courts side on this, i’ll say that’s all i know for certain right now. part of me wonders if Congressional/Presidential push on this is expecting the courts to temper the decision ultimately…and the courts may bring some of the behind-the-scenes data to light as to why this is going through at all. anything getting widely bipartisan support right now perks my ears up as to what all is really going on.

For rainy days we have a treadmill but it's locked into the vendor's subscription service if you want to watch videos.

Except...tap the bottom left 10 times, wait 7 seconds, tap 10 more times, up pops a number, use that as a seed to generate a number with lrand48, reduce modulo 999999 (not 1000000!) and type that number back in, and now you have an Android tablet with web browser and access to YouTube.

So was there a study over the last couple months showing evidence that the strength of dark energy is not consistently isotropic/homogeneous in space and time?

And if this study happened… how reliable/definitive is it?

I saw a popular press article that seemed to be saying this, but it was a popular press article and those mangle physics studies all the time.

tsrono,
@tsrono@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc zero info about dark energy is reliable/definitive.

some evidence which some scientists interpret as 'dark energy' is reliable/definitive. dark energy is just a blank placeholder until they figure out what the evidence actually means.

Heard some fabulous pop music waiting for a takeout burger. Is neo-soul a thing? Only heard the exit chorus, a singer drowned by a vast gospel choir, every upper-range instrument clear through the mix, even in a noisy shop with ceiling speakers. I never listen to pop music so had no idea who that was, but it was a production masterpiece, plainly expensive, with a groove that's stuck with me all evening. May never know, but I was there and it was fine.

tsrono,
@tsrono@mastodon.social avatar

@StarlingW pop/r&b/soul production is often top notch highest quality stuff. always interesting to listen for those reasons alone, lots of great stuff in there just composition/performance-wise as well tho.

Today is my birthday!

If you'd like to do something for me for my birthday, would you please reply to this with—or by other means send me— something with colors you liked? Like an image or a video or a link. Music would also be acceptable if it gives you a strong synesthesiac association with color.

If this request confuses you, here are some examples of images with colors I found striking [Artists: Laurie Barmore, Vian Borchert, Erica Aurahack]. But your reply can be whatever colors you like.

@mcc i thought that stuff had come from a Twitch stream he did a few times back around ‘21/‘22? i could be misremembering tho, i never payed a hell of a lot of attention to that behind the scenes stuff, it felt a bit weird to me. there was definitely a lot of stuff shared on Twitch streams around that era as well tho. would tag him here but not sure he cares to track all that info just for posterity’s sake. cool shit tho
