Expressed as a percentage, the Greens were the winners in last week’s elections but…

The Greens were the biggest winners in the local elections, so why aren’t they getting fair air time? https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2024/05/07/the-greens-were-the-biggest-winners-in-the-local-elections-so-why-arent-they-getting-fair-air-time/
Proportionately, the Greens won most seats at the recent local elections, but they are denied airtime, and we get Reform instead. Why?

I keep on looking at this map. The Gaza strip itself is already so small , one of the most densely populated parts of the world. And now everyone is supposed to cram into a minute part of this? And we are all supposed to appreciate this“humanitarian zone” - which has itself been repeatedly bombed already, too.

Just over a year ago, on Twitter, I encountered a launch presentation from electric flight folks, Maeve Aerospace. Here’s what I wrote at the time 🧵

Let me know what I got wrong, or what’s changed since.

There is a possible long term future for aviation of certain kinds…

IF

we don’t create the conditions for the collapse of resilient high energy civilisation.

But we ARE creating those conditions at present…

Listened to a couple of discussions about the shape of capitalist retreat:

  1. With a theoretical emphasis, the Macrodose conversation between Raj Patel, Jason W Moore and James Meadway (host) https://overcast.fm/+8dw-Ulyv4

  2. Doomer Optimism, James Pogue and Chris Mott with an ‘on-the-ground’ emphasis on the Sahel, especially Mauritania and the Central African Republic (CAR). What happened when France left and Wagner Group Russians (among others) moved in https://overcast.fm/+zkMNOM2Qc

Our politics are deeply unsuited to when politics has fked everything.

And social media is deeply unsuited to navigating it

…all we have are asynchronous words and words alone are inadequate to try to express how it makes us feel that the lesser of two evils is still evil

urlyman,
@urlyman@mastodon.social avatar

…the last times the UK was actively contributing to bombing the shit out of somewhere, we didn’t have social media at all (Iraq), and then had it a bit (Libya).

And we weren’t as heavily surveilled.

And we had the shale oil boom ahead of us to magic more growth on a finite planet.

And we had about 600 billion fewer tonnes of CO2 that we’d put into the atmosphere.

…This time, it’s the same old bullshit. And the discourse is basically the same. There’s just much more of it.

@RL_Dane not odious at all, but the threshold will always be wrong, won’t it?

It frustrates me occasionally but it’s also true that having a constraint is often useful.

I’m part way through the 2 regular podcasts I listen to which, for me, most interestingly explore the range of where we are and where we’re going, energetically speaking.

Tom Chi is this week’s The Great Simplification guest, and Olivia Lazard is this week’s @PlanetCritical guest.

Lots of thoughts, but I’m willing my ADD brain to listen to both in full before I comment on them. It’s hard because one of them is much more difficult to remain attentive to

My friend Susan Abulhawa - Palestinian author and changemaker - recently returned from Gaza. She spent two weeks there; delivering aid for animals and people, running workshops to support Palestinian people under siege to tell their own stories; and checking in on friends and family.

She didn't want to leave - Israel cancelled Humanitarian visas. Until she can enter again, Susan has been publishing her accounts of this brief time in Gaza. These pieces are haunting and honest. The devastation and state violence is much worse than what we've seen online.

I'll post her articles in this thread as they're published. And the videos she's produced. And urge everyone to read/watch.

Keep speaking up for Palestine!

I finished reading World Wide Waste by Gerry McGovern. I'd consider it essential reading for anyone working with computers!

https://gerrymcgovern.com/books/world-wide-waste/

It's well cited (though I still need to check those citations) & uses maths effectively to make it's point.

That computers + (surveillance) capitalism is actually worse for the environment than the predigital era. That we can and must move slow and fix things, and fund that vital work directly.
