Oh, so like shitty AI translated anime on Crunchyroll, but for manga. 19 million dollars series A investment to flood the market with mistranslations?!

They claim that a translator is going to do a double check, but at that speed that they promise, very sus.

This AI boom is getting annoying

https://www.cbr.com/manga-ai-translation-international-release/

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 @anianimalsmoe Swedish and English is quite close and it still wonโ€™t work well.

I think because a good translation for fiction needs to be creative, not generative. It canโ€™t draw from a table of potential options as it misses the cultural aspects for instance.

Itโ€™s not that a lot of these algorithms are useless, itโ€™s that someone is hellbent on cutting staff.

Wish I knew Japanese. Only language with a lot of entertainment I want direct access to. Honestly can do without the rest. Which is kind of odd.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@anianimalsmoe @chikorita157 Thereโ€™s a tipping point where the tools stop helping I think. Like a bell curve.

For instance dictionaries must have helped. Ways to look up cultural aspects as well. Stuff like rhyming dictionaries and thesauruses. Then digital versions instead of paper. Editing on computers instead of however the analog way worked.

But to get a worse translation to fix has got to be more work, if itโ€™s suppose to end up being a good one. Because itโ€™s not grammar/words only, as we know. Itโ€™s like translating in jokes basically.

They clearly want to not have staff at all. And I think thereโ€™s where the WGA/AGA failed. Because they didnโ€™t want to be copied, when the goal is to remove them all together. U.S. laws wonโ€™t matter when itโ€™s all made on some low cost country server park in the end.

While I donโ€™t like bad translations and bad experiences, itโ€™s something Iโ€™ve lived with anyways. They always underpaid translators and shitty customer service is pretty much a staple.

What I think is a big proper issue is the further pooling of wealth due to all this. In simplified terms, if weโ€™d taxed AI (and other post scarcity services some made a killing on) and used it for real livable UBI there would be more of a pressure to produce better entertainment (and services and other things).

I mean thereโ€™s groups of people who translate manga without getting paid now. If it wasnโ€™t illegal and they didnโ€™t need to live off it I think they would keep doing it. As a hobby.

(Sorry slightly uncoherent. Been some tough months lately:/ Hope the general idea came through.)

Definitely have an infection causing fever and delusions. Literally when I close my eyes, I'm suddenly fletching arrows in some Japanese setting, and when I open them, I'm sweating all over my pillow feeling feverish (but not actually at fever temps yet).

My fever dreams when I was young used to be space-sci fi themed, so I'm familiar with this situation.

A restaurant in Tokyo had to close temporarily after its owner ranted on social media about a non-Japanese couple who came to the store. Learn why the remarks are so controversial - and how some Japanese restaurants are struggling with the influx of tourists.

https://unseen-japan.com/izakaya-closes-japanese-only-controversy/

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@unseenjapan I absolutely see that if you move and live somewhere you should learn the local language. I mean, I did. So Iโ€™ve got that going for me.

But the idea that you canโ€™t go anywhere you donโ€™t know the language is just silly.

I do understand that tourist arrive and behave very disruptive. Iโ€™m not ok with that. Pretty sure nobody took offense when I visited Tokyo in the late 90s. I was pretty quiet and generally respectful.

But not knowing the language is silly. Thereโ€™s also far better solutions to this. For instance those apps to find places to eat? Have them list only places that can help people out who speaks other languages.

Also put photos in your menus, or make a simpler menu with photos. I ordered food by pointing several times by myself. Worked wonders:)

My Japanese history is spotty. I only know little bits and pieces. But it feels like thereโ€™s a wave of isolation going on again. Which would be a terrible thing in my opinion. Hopefully things turn out differently.

I'm honestly annoyed with PC gamers' response to Helldivers 2 requiring PSN accounts.

Refunding a game you've played for >200hrs because you have to make a new account? It's so childish.

If you're worried about a data breach or something, do what most security-conscious people do: use a unique username/password.

If you're in one of the few countries where PSN isn't an option you have a legit argument once they actually lock you out but the devs already say they're working on that problem.

If you're getting btfo because Sony wants your gameplay data, I have no sympathy.

I have plenty of issues with Sony. This ain't one of them

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@neatchee Gameplay data? As in statistics on what people do or donโ€™t do in games? Just trying to figure out what you meant by it.

I donโ€™t think statistics is inherently bad, and Iโ€™m not surprised if company A knows I bought product B from them.

The scary part is when they start tracking important things on individuals. Anyone that can pull out health, religion, race, sex, gender, etc on individuals is a huge issue.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@neatchee Yeah I was guessing it was something like that. Itโ€™s going to be โ€œYon plays a game in genre a, letโ€™s push another game in genre aโ€ after all.

I mean it doesnโ€™t even remotely work on me, but the in game metrics to improve things would be nice, or what type of games people like.

That said, if I was in charge of the giants like Nintendo, Sony, or XBox Iโ€™d run a bunch one 5-20 people studios whose sole job it is to make one game a year. Small Indy styles. To find new genres.

Having more accounts is a pita, but this ainโ€™t the worst Iโ€™ve seen. At least itโ€™s not a Bethesda account when you are on XBox (thatโ€™s where you should save, merge all accounts into one and have those people work on something better).

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@neatchee Thinking more in general. Ending up with a lot more accounts than I can manage really. Everything wants a dang account:/

Iโ€™d say some companies just want the statistics, but others very clearly want to hone in on individuals. Sadly any tries to stop it is just cost of doing business:(

But the general anger around a game isnโ€™t proportional. Itโ€™s a โ€œswear a bit by yourselfโ€ thing, not an act out one. Itโ€™s not SCOTUS taking away human rights. Itโ€™s a game.

(And Iโ€™m saying that as a gamer that seriously donโ€™t want to loose saves and such things.)

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@neatchee One of the reasons why I think accounts should be separate for the fediverse. Would be nice to be able to use one sign in for multiple servers and types of servers and have multiple identities with that.

Imho.

(Also a serious, and sad thought. If a single game is your whole identity, you are addicted and it could affect your life.)

    Still setting up the games on the Power Macintosh 8100. You might be wondering, why just use the G4 MDD.

    With some older games, it might need 16, 4 bit, or black and white color modes, which the modern PowerPC Mac (G3 and G4) can't even do. I did run out of memory trying to load Macintosh Garden in Claszilla and Finder crashed, wanting me to reboot the machine. Also playing early and mid 90s games runs better on a period correct Mac.

    Maybe maxing out the RAM might be a good idea, so I can turn off virtual memory for good.

    The machine will fly when the G3 accelerator is installed.

    @chikorita157 Also locking you out of your computer is BS. Iโ€™m all for the tech in general, as long as Iโ€™m in charge. I.e. I want to turn it on, and I donโ€™t want it required.

    Also open the damn specs. Iโ€™m very mild with these things, but specs should be open.

    They are working on Linux (which you probably knew), and have gotten pretty far. Super impressed by all their work. And it doesnโ€™t just benefit Linux itself, anyone else now have open source code available.

    3-5 years, and support two generations back. Itโ€™s not like they canโ€™t update it/bring out new versions of apps and new apps etc. Even add new APIs. Just keep things stable for us users. Plus no change for the sake of change or even worse, partial updates that are then abandoned:(

    Itโ€™s suppose to be mature software.
