Remember when had to be invaded manually?

CHARLES: Oh, God. I’ll just live inside your trousers or something. It would be much easier!

CAMILLA: (laughing) What are you going to turn into, a pair of knickers? (Both laugh). Oh, you’re going to come back as a pair of knickers.

CHARLES: Or, God forbid, a Tampax. Just my luck! (Laughs)

CAMILLA: You are a complete idiot! (Laughs) Oh, what a wonderful idea

What is your number one reason you bring to people on why they should care about #privacy ?

Some say, they can have my data I don't care, or even if I got a card fraud, I'll get my money back from the insurance, or things like this.

I'm trying to find good examples to counter their cheap arguments ...

Boosts appreciated 🙏🏽

@hyde
Privacy is about power and autonomy.

The more you know about something the more you can control it.

Or if it's what they know about you, the more control they have over you whether you acknowledge it or not.

Many prefer not to consider or look for the bigger picture because that takes time and effort, and can lead you to uncomfortable realisations and difficult decisions.

Many won't accept even obvious truths like the above because they'd rather be controlled than an autonomous self.

happyborg,
@happyborg@fosstodon.org avatar

@hyde many here are saying people don't care but I don't think that's true. Look deeper.

They resist for many reasons and some are obvious. I've seen reports that most users of Facebook for example wish it didn't invade their privacy but what alternatives do they have and at what cost?

They know that acting on that desire is much harder than succumbing, so they resist in various ways.

I'm hopeful we can change this. It will never be easy but it can be done over time.

I hope helps.

Question: I am using apps to save links and articles. Does anyone know which one would be more respectful of users’ privacy/confidentiality between Feedly and Pocket?
Or does anyone have another recommendation?

pcublogue,
@pcublogue@pkutalk.com avatar

@soheb What stopped me to use Pocket was to find out that they link a lot of stuff to the user :/ (I was surprised)

Content, search history, data used, etc.

soheb,
@soheb@pkutalk.com avatar

@pcublogue I'm not sure if that's used for advertising. It sounds if it is given that Mozilla owns Pocket and they are pretty much a beacon for privacy concerns.

It makes sense for them to collect that on the usual - you have a pocket account, you save links, you search. It makes sense that they store that details. Whether they give it to advertisers is another thing entirely.

Privacy is about using technology at your terms. It is about not being used by those who make technology.

[ENG] I would like to sincerely thank the Fediwersum community for showing me how to effectively object to the use of my data by Meta (Facebook). Thanks to you, I was able to do it, and my objection was automatically accepted by FB. I'm sharing the content of the objection in both Polish and English so that everyone can use it.

Once again, thank you for your support! 💪

From 100 people I try to talk to about #privacy, maybe 1 wants to 😅

Many know or suspect the issues with the #corporations collecting their #data but they try their best not to think about it, because they seem to feel helpless against it anyway.

Best way to change minds seems to be - living with privacy and answering questions when people notice your behavior & promoting / supporting alternative #software & #hardware.

#Mastodon has a big #userbase that cares about privacy, glad to be here!

@CatDad Hi Jeff, Proton currently uses AI in Proton Sentinel to help protect against account takeovers.

This is available for subscribers and off by default. Please note that this is not generative AI like ChatGPT, but rather a more traditional machine learning approach, used to prevent email abuse.

Any future applications will depend on community interest and demand.
