Ugh! So is selling our data, not shocking after they were acquired... but there are alternatives that are below that public libraries can use!

For the Libby background, read https://buttondown.email/ninelives/archive/the-coming-enshittification-of-public-libraries/

For the targeted ad investigation, read https://www.theregister.com/2024/05/18/mystery_of_the_targeted_mobile_ads/

One of them is Library Simplified https://librarysimplified.org/get-started/

The Palace Project looks awesome and is fully accessible, screen reader wise! Librarians should check out https://thepalaceproject.org/platform/

"NYPD will deploy drones to respond to 911 calls"

  • Pilot program is in 5 precincts.
  • Each precinct will get rooftop drone platform
  • Calling it “drones as first responders”

This a good thing? Drones can certainly get eyes to an emergency quickly. Video footage admissible in court?

Privacy implications? Will people be shooting these down?

@davemark might be good for ‘which way did they go?’ Reconnaissance, but I can easily see them chasing and observing ‘the wrong guy’.

We’ve seen manned helicopters with heat and night vision doing the same thing. This is still going to need a ‘pilot’ albeit sitting at a desk somewhere.

I know other blind people love AI but why is corporations/companies like this taking all of your private internal chats and data to be used for their LLMs a good thing? More importantly, can we go back to and now? https://slack.com/intl/en-gb/trust/data-management/privacy-principles

elduvelle,
@elduvelle@neuromatch.social avatar

@weirdwriter And why is it so hard to opt-out?
They have an option for everything else, but to opt-out of their “AI” looking at your messages and activity you have to… send an email??!

“Contact us to opt out. If you want to exclude your Customer Data from Slack global models, you can opt out. To opt out, please have your org, workspace owners or primary owner contact our Customer Experience team at feedback@slack.com with your workspace/org URL and the subject line ‘Slack global model opt-out request’. We will process your request and respond once the opt-out has been completed.”

How many libraries had "police having the tech to scan the RFID of a library book in a moving car" in their list of threat scenarios? :yikes:

@yo_bj I never thought RFID was an especially good idea, but wow, this one did not occur to me.

@yo_bj You have to ask yourself why they’d want to and what they’re planning to do with the information.

There are many reasons for choosing alternatives to Big Tech. Tracking cookies, targeted ads, and closed source software are just the tip of the iceberg. 🧊

What concerns are keeping you up at night? 🤔

noodlejetski,
@noodlejetski@masto.ai avatar

@Tutanota EU's constant proposals to break encryption https://digitalcourage.social/

timepencil,

@Tutanota I worry about the 'back end' software that is used by providers like Tuta.com and Proton.me

Sure, their 'clients' may open source, and they may even publish the code that is purportedly used on their servers. But there's no chance of verifying whether or not that's actually the code that is used on the actual servers.

Not that being given access to the code used on the servers would help me; the last time I wrote a program, it was in BASIC.
