I figured I'd give it a week, and then re-evaluate. Worst case scenario is that I have a particularly productive week with less outrage-bait. I think I can swing that.

The only catch-22 is that if there's another vote on Wednesday/whenever to continue the blackout, is that most of the folks who are in support of it won't be there to vote, since they'll be avoiding the platform already.

I was nothing more than an outside lurker on Reddit, as in I didn't even have an account and I used the main app to doomscroll, so the whole API thing didn't really bother me until I learned more about what all it would affect. And the more I learned, the more it left a bad taste in my mouth. I decided to create an account here to check it out and interact more as an actual user. While kbin does need some work, I enjoy the vibes and atmosphere more than in comparison to Reddit. It's like this whole ordeal has brought people together in such a way that we're taking the next step in social media. I like it, and I'm eager to see how kbin will evolve as time goes on.

I will probably still use reddit some. I mostly use reddit for it's niche gaming subs like r/baldursgate, r/projecteternity, r/dragonage etc. Reddit just has the size of community to allow small subs to exist and have regular content. Other than that I like kbin better so far and I had already weened off using reddit for news and switched to flipboard. Reddit made it too easy to fall into the trap of not reading the article and just go into the comments for entertainment. As Kbin or other platforms grow I could easily see myself leaving reddit for good though. Reddit also has the benefit of being a good source of random information. I often find myself using reddit as a search modifier to find a thread of someone having the same issue and then finding the solution there.

Something I think you're missing is that kbin is in the early stages of development. That means it's not done yet.

I'm sticking with kbin probably. I like it!

I'll probably use both for a while. Same thing that happened when Twitter went private. I set up a Mastodon server for myself and dived head in. I used Mastodon and Twitter both about equally for a while, and as Twitter went downhill I used Mastodon more and more. I used to keep Twitter pinned as a tab in Firefox. It is now replaced with Mastodon.

I won't be using Reddit's mobile app and I won't be paying a subscription feed for a 3rd party app. So I'll be using kbin on my phone whereas I would have used Reddit before. As Reddit goes downhill from the lack of quality posters getting mad and abandoning ship out of principal and moderation goes to shit because of the lack of bot tools I'll use it less and less and probably stop using it once old.reddit.com is inevitably taken away. I may log in to continue moderating a subreddit there that has a very small niche following for a band I like, but that would be it if I have to use their new interface.

When I started at Reddit 12 years ago, the top upvoted posts had only around 200-300 points. This place reminds me of that time too much to want to go back to what became of it today.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but in the coming months, we should be able to interact with most of the Fediverse through Kbin, right? If Reddit doesn’t do a complete reversal on changes I have no problem staying with Kbin or something else. This feels new and refreshing and I’m willing to put up with the growing pains as long as there’s enough activity.

Also, doesn’t surprise me how many folks here are old school Redditors. This place REALLY feels like the early days of Reddit.

I'm playing it by ear, but I really do not wish to return to reddit and hope others will be hesitant as well.

I'll be looking at a range of sites to see how the population distribution pans out. I'm mostly looking for a busy, populated site with comments.

Kbin seems nice overall, but could use more engagement

I've had a look at https://tildes.net/ but it looks like they're not interested in rapidly growing, they're more concerned about selecting people manually to see if they fit the 'culture' of the site, fair it's their own space I guess.

squabbles.io seems to have a really active dev and looks like a good mix of reddit and Twitter, it seems active and looks like it might be the best candidate to take on the refugees from Reddit.

I have a 16 year old account and have been a subscriber for 10. I will login to cancel my account. I will delete my content and I will log in only if a search takes me there for old info under adguard. I’m done there for all intents and purposes.

YeezyUmplebutter,

Same. Had my account for 10 years. I used Redact to delete all of my account history. Delete the official app form my phone. I’m keeping Apollo just for memories sake. But not planning to go back.

I will go back... but for a different reason.

I've not been posting on my main account on Reddit for a while since I started using Mastodon & got on the Fediverse. Probably will delete teh account sometime tomorrow.

However, I do have some immigration-related issues which I try to ask using a throwaway account, and the only immigration-related support groups I am aware of are all Reddit subreddits. In fact I believe /r/IWantOut never did the blackout because there are ppl fleeing war zones on that sub.

So... yeah, I'll keep using Reddit until my personal situation is resolved. But I have no intention of using Reddit as my main social media anytime soon, we have good enough memes and cat pics here on lemmy/kbin anyways

Long term though we should recreate similar support groups here. It shouldn't be the case that immigration-related support groups only exist on reddit.

TheK,

Absolutely not. After reading Christian’s last post containing the audio recordings and reading about his interactions with Reddit, I find that I am too disgusted to continue using the site.

I am enjoying Kbin so far and I hope that it grows into something really amazing over time.

I really do not want to go back to reddit. I’d prefer if we all work together to build out the open web/
/ fediverse instead.

I do not plan to return to reddit. I edited-then-deleted all my years of past comments with a program. With that said, I don't expect a reddit clone. I am kind of splitting my attention between different sites. I am curious and hopeful how these places will evolve and how they will do things differently than I am used to. I don't know that I want to be in mainstream internet communities so much anymore.

It just seems more small town in some aspects, and it's not all corporate. It's nice, but I know this is a fluid situation for the most part. I would say I am in wait-and-see mode, but I've still written off reddit itself. It's more about finding other ways to occupy my time.
