I just searched for something on and got a “DuckAssist” at the top of the results, right below the ads (of course).

It was basically a ChatGPT like message as if I’d typed the question there.

Stop 👏 putting 👏 👏 in 👏 every 👏 fucking 👏 thing!

@kev I want an AI T-shirt that displays a different quote using inbuilt led display to the person I’m facing based on facial recognition and stereotypical profiling. Because.

@kev FuckFuckNo... turning that off right away

@kev Every time I see something like that it reminds me of the toaster from Red Dwarf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRq_SAuQDec ?

enthusiast101,

@kev
I honestly think what DuckDuckGo is doing is fine. Their results mostly come from Wikipedia and that is clearly stated. It also isn't a chatbot, but rather a tool that summarizes pages. It also tries to stick with straightforward answers to minimize the chance of it being wrong.

It also can be turned off in the settings for ddg if you really don't want to deal with it.

autolycus,

@kev DuckDuckGo = Bing. I don't trust them from a privacy standpoint because you cannot trust any company that's financially dependent on Microsoft. They've been caught sharing data with MS before.

@kev I've used ddg in every context on every device for over 12 years... From which they should take no great sense of safety, as I used Google Search for 15 years before dropping it like someone handed me gorilla dung after I learned about how invasive and polluted their search results were.

Sure seems like I need to begin trying other privacy focused search engines if wants to put more into generating AI hype than giving me unfiltered unbubbled untracked search results. @ anyone?

@kev I stopped using DuckDuckGo quite a long time and moved to StartPage. It takes 1 second aprox to load the content but is a little payment for privacy

kev,
@kev@fosstodon.org avatar

@wolfxyz I hate the design of Startpage. The colours are just horrible; horrible enough to prevent me from using it.

@starborn No. I like DDG.

@kev 😑 Is it time to change search engine? was my go to.

kev,
@kev@fosstodon.org avatar

@ricard I won’t be changing. They’re still better than most, this is just annoying. It can be turned off though.

@kev I've not noticed this happening to my searches yet, but I did recently spot that little speech bubble icon and hovered over to see what it was. That was a disappointing feeling 😔

I actually rather enjoy "AI" as something to play around with, but I'm also fully aware that it isn't really AI, and everybody jumping onto the implementations bandwagon as if it is, seems dangerous. There are already far too many impressionable people soaking up misinformation in the world without fact-checking!

@kev Artificial Intelligence... the cash cow of 2024.

There are some good and helpful uses for it.

The way it's being used now by practically every big tech company in town (including Mozilla)... is not one of those good uses.

They've apparently learned very little from the last time such a big bubble burst...

@kev Working in education and having Microsoft and Adobe shoving AI into every possible nook and cranny they can has been depressing.

tivasyk,
@tivasyk@mastodon.social avatar

@BenjaminNelan i'm sorry in advance but if one is working in education and uses microsoft and adobe let alone shove those onto students, one is already lost and a bit of ai on top won't hurt.

BenjaminNelan,
@BenjaminNelan@mastodon.social avatar

@tivasyk well phew, my mind is at ease. thank you so much for your contribution.

mrFred489,
@mrFred489@fosstodon.org avatar

@kev it seems like a very short sighted feature from the search engines perspective. If no one has to go to the websites, then people will have no reason to create websites with the answers, and then the AI can’t get the answer.
