I just searched for something on and got a “DuckAssist” at the top of the results, right below the ads (of course).

It was basically a ChatGPT like message as if I’d typed the question there.

Stop 👏 putting 👏 👏 in 👏 every 👏 fucking 👏 thing!

@kev I've used ddg in every context on every device for over 12 years... From which they should take no great sense of safety, as I used Google Search for 15 years before dropping it like someone handed me gorilla dung after I learned about how invasive and polluted their search results were.

Sure seems like I need to begin trying other privacy focused search engines if wants to put more into generating AI hype than giving me unfiltered unbubbled untracked search results. @ anyone?

“But Thomas, you live in a bubble”

No. What I’m doing is to choose to be among people who aren’t horrible assholes.

You’re not obligated to listen to assholes nor are their opinions worthwhile to listen to. These people are rotten sacks of garbage and that’s why I’m taking them out to the block bin where they belong.

bujiraso,
@bujiraso@fosstodon.org avatar

@thomasfuchs The small web is gaining ground and if we're a bit more "bubble"-y, as it grows, I think that's fine. Society entered into this wacky hyperconnected world that way before we made it a de facto civic duty to be exposed to a whole internet* of bots and trolls.

Returning to the small lets us dismantle the disinformation machine that is the Instant Gratification Global Mass Media. If we see more cohesive communities as a result, I don't hear a loss there.

*That's the plural, I say.

Note to self: don't argue with people online about neuroscience, quantum mechanics and AI before you had a coffee or 5

bujiraso,
@bujiraso@fosstodon.org avatar

@thomasfuchs heh, I also just voiced the "brains do quantum, and sapience isn't possible to model on a Linear Bounded Automaton or even a Turing machine" and got into a small but heated disagreement over it last week.

i am so over the web design trend where every piece of text on the page has to animate in

A webpage for a "Noble" crypto project, where each piece of text slides into view on scroll

bujiraso,
@bujiraso@fosstodon.org avatar

@molly0xfff

> See distracting web page
> Hit Reader mode; junk decimated to beautiful plain-text
> Valuable content? Keep reading. If not, close tab

That's my new web surfing algorithm. Front-eng is better when it's subtle and doesn't fire that mental subroutine.
I love beautiful web sites; not excessive wacky waving inflatable arm flailing web-content.

And no, I don't mean myself. I'm doing some research on the various styles and topics out there.

"hate group" means something specific that, personally, we don't want to water down. so we won't call Autism Speaks a hate group. however, their mission statement lays bare their intent to harm the autistic community. they do not speak for us.

as an autistic adult we would greatly prefer that your donations instead go to the Autistic Self Advocacy Network. https://autisticadvocacy.org/

@bujiraso@fosstodon.org avatar

@irenes I looked at the mission page and didn't understand the context of this post.
I'd like to ensure I don't support groups that are problematic, what specifically are they doing?

I'm out of the loop.

🔴 Today on Live, we'll discuss a major change I'm making to my Emacs configuration: the total removal of Evil Mode. We'll hack on my configuration a bit to figure out some ways to smooth out the transition.

Can I kick the habit, or am I forever possessed?

@PINE64 hello, got a Q

Has the PineSound died? It was said to be an April Fool's joke in 2022, and then said not to be. The dithering seemed in poor taste, and now it looks like it was part of the joke?

Looking forward to hear more, as I was excited to contribute in that space.

I've been using GNU screen for over 20 years. It's been my go to for terminal multiplexers. I think I can use the word "literally" when I say every time I bring this up someone suggests I move to tmux because it's better. I don't disagree, but man that command prefix (Ctrl-B) is just hard to get used to. I know I can change it in the config, but I'm trying not to so I'm used to how it's default installed. It just doesn't feel intuitive. It's so much more of a stretch to get to.

I completely respect the admins' choice, but personally, I just blocked the Threads . net domain from interacting with my account.

If anything I have not missed anything coming from zuck-owned platforms for over a decade now, and I'm 100% confident I won't miss anything in the future. But if by some twist later on they can still reach / scrape my stuff in the future, then I'll probably have to resort to start hosting my own.

bujiraso,
@bujiraso@fosstodon.org avatar

@kzimmermann I didn't know that was possible, do you have a link? 🙂

My search results are regrettably astroturfed with high SEO content about how to interact with Threads, but none on how to /best/ interact (i.e. send to /dev/null)

Now that Google Podcasts is going away... has anyone migrated an audio podcast feed from Google Podcasts to YouTube Music? I'm going to have to have a YouTube "channel" and account for the podcast, aren't I?

bujiraso,
@bujiraso@fosstodon.org avatar

@andypiper almost certainly the case. I'm begrudgingly in that ecosystem, though attempting to leave.

A "wonderful" & relevant tangential part about it being coded as just a YouTube user is that al(most al)l your music-side playlists also clutter your video-side and vice versa.

Because the back-end is all the same and it's a totally bone-headed misfeature. When I reached out to support, they cooly explained that "technically, this is good or something". I remain unconvinced.

Just read a phenomenal upshot that doesn't have enough celebrities, nor an addictive algorithm, so that's why it isn't "bigger"... It was phrased as a complaint, but I'm running with it all the way to the other goal post:

Mastodon (and the in general) shows us what a post-egomaniac, post-mass-media world looks like.

Throw that the heck on the front of the cereal box for Mastodon, "NOW WITH LESS SOCIETAL SICKNESS! FORTIFIED WITH REAL HUMAN DISCUSSION!".

I'd buy a box! 🥣😀

Anyone else seeing total instability on ? (linux, NixOS)

I just updated and now loading almost any page, even GMail, is crashing the entire browser. I'll be the first to mention that, yes, it's something safe mode seemingly fixes, but the only add-ons I have are KeepassXC and Ublock Origin and one other innocuous one. I've never needed to worry about an upgrade totally breaking my ability to access the web.
