Ubuntu Desktop’s 24.10 Dev Cycle - The Roadmap

"Our plan is to grow the Ubuntu Desktop team by at least another 50% over the next year and we are opening a range of positions across all levels of seniority in the coming weeks. At Canonical we think the future is bright for the Linux desktop and if you have the passion and skills to be at the cutting edge of performance, security, immutability and accessibility then we want to hear from you."

I just searched for something on and got a “DuckAssist” at the top of the results, right below the ads (of course).

It was basically a ChatGPT like message as if I’d typed the question there.

Stop 👏 putting 👏 👏 in 👏 every 👏 fucking 👏 thing!

I have a hard time adopting new command line tools (I'm a little set in my ways!) but I've really been enjoying @atuin (https://atuin.sh) for finding things in my shell history

Fish's default history tools work for me 95% of the time, but Atuin is great for the last 5% when I need to hunt to find 1 complicated command that I ran 6 months ago. It's way nicer than repeatedly running history | grep ... | grep ... until I find what I'm looking for. And it can sync your history if you want!

jbouter,
@jbouter@fosstodon.org avatar

@b0rk @atuin does anyone in the replies know how it compares to fzf history search (apart from the synchronisation across devices)?

How do you keep your Linux systems secure?

(your replies may be read out and discussed on an episode of Late Night Linux)

jbouter,
@jbouter@fosstodon.org avatar

@LateNightLinux CIS hardening, strict firewall rules (default deny), apparmor or SELinux, containerising applications (non-root container configuration using subuid and subgid).

For machines directly reachable on the internet: crowdsec (fail2ban but with community lists)
For machines behind a gateway/firewall: using publicly available blocklists and integrating them in opnsense

All boxes (servers, gateways, access points, etc) have automatic updates enabled and are monitored using Prometheus.

jbouter,
@jbouter@fosstodon.org avatar

@simon @LateNightLinux absolutely! Most apply to servers, but they're good practices regardless of role. And just pick what applies best to your configuration anyways. 100% CIS score means your machine is powered off 😜

Youngest son: Daaaaaad, do you have a nick name?

Me: No mate. Your mum has a few choice names for me, but none that I can repeat to you.

Him: [confused look] Oh…I think mine should be “Moonhead Invisinips”

Me: WHAT?!

jbouter,

Just popped to the local pub. They have ingredients I like:
✅ Good beer 🍺
✅ Snacks 🥜
✅ Dogs allowed 🐕
✅ Roaring fireplace 🔥
However, they also have:
❌ No Wi-Fi 😱
❌ A guy on a loud FaceTime call 🤯
🤔🫠

jbouter,
@jbouter@fosstodon.org avatar

@popey Wi-Fi in a pub? Why?

jbouter,
@jbouter@fosstodon.org avatar

@popey Jesus fucking Christ lad 😂 what would patrons use it for in a pub?! I go there to drink with friends. Perhaps difference between UK and NL.. we usually work in lunch places and cafes, and just drink in pubs.

One trick to make your life much better as a maintainer and help contributors

Have a Makefile directive to run everything that runs on CI

make x is all it should take to verify the changes pass automated tests

Linter, formatter, sorter, unit tests, etc

If tooling is needed then add a make setup directive that takes care of installing it

jbouter,
@jbouter@fosstodon.org avatar

@sonny got any examples on how it makes life easier?

@JoeRess@fosstodon.org avatar

Fun fact: the music at the end of 2.5 Admins episodes is a bit quieter than at the beginning. That's because I understand that some people listen to podcasts while they go to sleep and I don't want to wake them up.

I have been enjoying using instead of "Chat gee-pee-tee" recently. However, I'm now very font of "Ask Jeeps". I asked the jeepster themselves, to come up with a logo, reminiscent of the old Ask Jeeves branding. Here's the result.

I’m doing an online class with a bunch of other trans women and most of them are early transition and are not passing. It is incredibly easy to gender them correctly. It actually makes me mad how easy it is to believe someone is the gender they say they are and gender them correctly even if they aren’t passing, even if they have a deep voice, even if they aren’t conventionally attractive. We put so much pressure on ourselves to try to be gendered correctly and it’s actually so fucking easy

jbouter,
@jbouter@fosstodon.org avatar

@danirabbit I fully support you and anyone transitioning or having transitioned. But I genuinely sometimes find it hard. I mean absolutely no disrespect, and I really wish it came super easy.. but I still sometimes make mistakes if I knew the person before starting transition. My intentions are never bad.
