The Apple A10 was the first A-series chip name to have a suffix, A10 Fusion. It was their first big.LITTLE implementation, so it sort of made sense.

The A11 Bionic was seemingly named because "A10 had a cool suffix, and Bionic is a cool word."

And then for the next 5 generations, they forgot to ask anyone if they should change the cool suffix, so they kept using the same up to A16 Bionic.

The latest is the A17 Pro, because everything they do is Pro. Everything.

autolycus,

@foo Not everything is Pro. Some things are Air.

It's fun to blame Red Lobster going down because of all you can eat shrimp, but no one really emphasizes this bit:

"A private equity firm bought the chain ten years ago from Darden Restaurants.... The firm, Golden Gate Capital, funded the deal partly by selling Red Lobster's real estate.

That meant the chain had to start paying rent. That's now a major financial factor in Red Lobster's bankruptcy filing"

VC again leaving a trail of destruction behind them

autolycus,

@virtualbri If I run a company into bankruptcy, pocketing as much cash I can by liquidating whatever I can, it’s called embezzlement. If a VC does it, it’s called business.

Kinda wish I'd have set the DS420 up as JBOD

But as I learned from the ZFS NAS, don't be too greedy with storage space. I'd have set the ZFS up as some mirrors like what SHR ends up being if you use the defaults.

On the DS-712, I used JBOD because any data I care about there will be stored in multiple locations anyway, so if a drive goes kablooie, no biggn

autolycus,

@yakkoj It only becomes problematic when you get into many terabytes of data. Then the inconvenience of transferring it back when a drive fails makes it a pain (and beats the crap out of your surviving disks, making another failure more likely).

Starting my home lab has been amazing. Yes, I've had stumbles, but that has been a part of the experience. It's been a lot like when I first switched to . Everything is new and exciting again.

autolycus,

@thelinuxcast It's fun trying to figure out use cases for all the things you want to experiment with.

Of course, now that you're home labbing, it's only a matter of time before you have to switch your name to BSD-cast 😉

I freaking hate politics right now. There is no place for views that aren't hard-left or hard-right. There is no desire for dialog. Most people in reality are not perfect ideological stereotypes. But in spite of that, I see more and more of my online acquaintances falling into line with these sterotypes. Being part of the left leaning FOSS community, usually this means presenting as far left revolutionaries. It is resulting in the split of communities and ejection of good faith participants.

autolycus,

@soller The majority of people do not have hard-left or hard-right views. Political dialogue has just been monopolized by those crowds because no one has the patience to deal with their bullshit.

Extreme polarization is the natural result of the two party system. No matter your political beliefs, I think that finding ways to destroy the two party system should be everyone's top priority.

Proportional representation is promising:

TIL id Software is owned by MS.

More like "today I realized"

Are they going to be chewed up and spit out like what happened to Rare?

I pine for the good old days when I only hated MS because of shitty things they did with DOS and Windows, but not even I am daft enough to yell at cloud and curse Bill Gates (some people STILL do this in 2024! Gates is bad, but "2020s MS" isn't a thing we can pin on him.)

autolycus,

@thelinuxcast Is the gtk requirement because you're on Gnome? I use , but I don't think it uses gtk or qt (I might be wrong). It's a real winner if you're looking for theming and customization.

I just searched for something on and got a “DuckAssist” at the top of the results, right below the ads (of course).

It was basically a ChatGPT like message as if I’d typed the question there.

Stop 👏 putting 👏 👏 in 👏 every 👏 fucking 👏 thing!

autolycus,

@kev DuckDuckGo = Bing. I don't trust them from a privacy standpoint because you cannot trust any company that's financially dependent on Microsoft. They've been caught sharing data with MS before.

36.4 TB RAID0 up and running and mounted in the appropriate place. Next task will be to transfer a bunch of stuff via rsync. Or maybe I might just unhook the external HDD from my main and transfer it via USB. Can't decide. Probably going to be slow af either way.

autolycus,

@thelinuxcast RAID0 seems like an odd choice for that much data. Disks fail, and with that much data it can be time consuming to resurrect it even if you have a backup.

I know it seems like you lose a lot of storage with RAID-5, but the ability to just swap a disk and keep humming along is totally worth it.

I was annoyed at Max Verstappen’s dominance but I think I was looking at it wrong. Yes its annoying that every race is for second place—but we’re witnessing a generational talent.

He’s like Tiger Woods Or Wayne Gretzky Or Michael Jordan. He is so good at driving cars that the 2nd through 20th best car drivers in the world don’t even entertain the idea that they could beat him.

And yes its partly the car, but its not like Cheko is up there with him every race. Max is the GOAT.

autolycus,

@jamwil I only pay attention to F1 by proxy of relatives who actually care, but hasn't this been the case with F1 for a while? Schumacher --> Hamilton --> Vettel.

There always seems to be a team/driver combo that dominates the sport for a period of time.

autolycus,

@tcely I don't know, I would find it very difficult. I think the biggest problem is viewing it through the lens of "greatness." Instead, I would consider who is the least bad, starting with the worst.

While some presidents did an okay job, I'm not sure I would describe any of them as "great." Even the ones who did great things also did terrible things.

That's not to say I would do better. It's a tough job and many competent men have screwed it up.

Well, I got installed on a 2012 Mac mini. It went incredibly smoothly considering the number of articles scattered around the Internet hinting at difficulties. (There were none.)

autolycus,

@jbaggs I have also installed FreeBSD on a 2012 Mac Mini.

It went pretty smoothly but I never got the Thunderbolt ports to work correctly. Without installing any extras I could use them for monitors. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it to mount external drives. It would recognize the devices but not mount them.

It’s been just shy of 2 weeks since I started watching The Walking Dead1,
and I’ve just finished off the third season. Which puts me around 20% of the way
through all 11 seasons (177 episodes).

I’ve definitely missed out having only just started the show recently, but at least I’m
now able to binge it non-stop. I’m watching it at night, in my lunch break, on
my commutes, I literally fill any free time with it right now.

One thing’s for ... https://chrishannah.me/micro/2024-02-06-23-07.html

autolycus,

@chrishannah I didn't dive into that one until COVID hit. It's well made but I also think the first 5–6 seasons are unintentionally fascist. Think about the message it conveys about leadership and consolidating power into a single, personable strongman.

I think you'll notice that many fascist concepts (post-apocalyptic, us vs. them, our group vs. their group, value in individual strength) are central to the show.

Having been a FreeBSD (and BSD in general) user since the 2.x days and managed a small fleet of servers since the heady 4.x days (including a few Sun UltraSPARC II and IIi servers and dealing with the ATA problems), I've been rooting for FreeNAS and TrueNAS CORE for a long time.

It's kind of disheartening to have seen support for FreeBSD from hardware, software and cloud vendors fade away. I knew that when TrueNAS SCALE was going to be based on Linux that it'll eventually lead to CORE getting sunsetted.

I do have to say that I am a bit of a hypocrit in that I migrated from CORE to SCALE on my TrueNAS Mini X+ and only have one server running FreeBSD (even though the cloud provider no longer provides support).

Lawrence Systems: The Future of TrueNAS...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZK3i6hD3VE

autolycus,

@qlp I really hope they keep TrueNAS Core going. I find the jails extremely useful and overall I just prefer a system based on FreeBSD. When we purchased a new NAS at work I convinced my boss to go with TrueNAS over Synology specifically because it's FreeBSD.

If we had to switch to Scale all my jails would have to become VMs (or maybe I'd create a FreeBSD VM that runs a bunch of jails, but then it gets tricky with networking).

I hate both super bowl teams. Can they both lose?

That's the end of Football for me.

Also, tbh, the end of Basketball too. MSU and the Warriors are horrible this year. I am a curse on all sports teams

autolycus,

@thelinuxcast Man, your teams are all over the place.

I was also rooting for the Ravens and the Lions today. Last time I was rooting for the meteor in the Super Bowl was Broncos vs. Panthers.

I guess I have to pull for the 49ers because I would hate to see Mahomes catch up to Brady (Go Blue!).

One thing that drives me nuts in shows and movies is the trope that you can pay cash at a motel and check in under a fake name.

I have never—not once in my life—not been asked for ID when checking in at a motel. Is this an American thing?

autolycus,

@jamwil They're just using plot devices from old movies and they think the audience won't notice. It's similar to how cell phones are always out of range in horror flicks even in places they would definitely have service.

I have to applaud the risk taken by all the newsletters saying "we're leaving Substack" while they're still on Substack, since censoring the ship as it's being abandoned is inevitably the playbook for Free Speech Absolutists (see Twitter, Freenode, etc).

autolycus,

@foo I think the only way to be a "free speech absolutist" is to support a federated approach that you don't control.

A monetized platform where all the data is centralized is antithetical to "absolute free speech." You can't eat your cake and have it, too.

It's just not economically viable at a large scale. No one wants to pay for that service or advertise on it. If so, 4chan would be a successful company.

Let's face it guys, the #Eagles are just a bad football team. Not bad as in Cardinals or Panthers bad, but still not great. The offense is broken, the defense has been broken, and it's not getting better this season with this crew.

I'm having serious doubts about Sirianni. If the offense is his fault, then he should be fixing it. The talent is there. If it's Brian Johnson, then he needs to go. Him & Desai & Patricia can all go.

Call Frank, he's available, and he made Wentz look good! Twice!
