I'm kinda obsessed with Rogue and roguelike games in general (and weird monsters). I was reading this great article from 2016 about their history that I boosted yesterday (thanks to @WoodooProd for alerting me to it).

As I read and poked around the web to check out these early roguelikes, I loved these two screens from a SUPER early roguelike (Pedit5, from 1975).

Monsters loading! 🤣

rodneylives,

@jake4480 I've played a significant amount of pedit5! It has a different feel to roguelikes, but has definite similarities in theme.

@rodneylives @WoodooProd oh nice! I still need to try it myself. Like most of the ones I save.. I played Mac Moria as a kid on my family's Performa in the 90s and got hooked, and there's so many modern roguelikes on Switch or Steam.. so many to try. Hadn't even hears of Pedit5 til @WoodooProd posted that article! The history is fascinating.

@jake4480 @rodneylives

The whole history of video games is fascinating. Clearly! In the case of Roguelikes and RPGs, which remain my favorite genre, it's a real pleasure to discover a little more each time, and to be able to put things back in their proper order. And it always opens up other perspectives to discover about other things, other games, other juicy details, etc..

The fact that we can share so simply and amicably here on Mastodon is a blessing. Also. :0)

@WoodooProd @rodneylives So true! It's been awesome meeting you and sharing all this info.. For I am a roguelike fanatic as well 🤣😂🤣

rodneylives,

@jake4480 Me? I mean I did write a column on them for several years, but does anyone really remember it?

@WoodooProd

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@rodneylives you wrote a column on them? Online? Got a link? Would love to read!

rodneylives,

@jake4480 The place I played it is Cyber1, which is an internet-facing PLATO system you can apply for an account on. Try cyber1.org (when I checked it just now the site was down, but I suspect it's temporary).

@rodneylives @WoodooProd hmm yeah seems down to me but I will keep checking - thanks!

@rodneylives @jake4480

Wow, this is great! I will check it! Thanks so much! :0)

@jake4480 @WoodooProd it's funny, this pedit5 predates even Rogue (from 1980, right?) so it's been retroactively categorized as rogue like.
Anyways, one of my favorites is dungeon crawl stone soup, or dass for short

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@spinning_bird yeah it does! Wild, right? DCSS is awesome - I tried it for the first time recently. I need to play it more!

richardtroupe,

@jake4480 @WoodooProd An excellent and succinct history! I'm glad to see PLATO get a mention!

What I also like about these kinds of articles are the new avenues to explore, the new discoveries, the deeper history of all these games, etc.. There's often something to dig deeper into! :0)

This article, for example, has lots of sources and references at the bottom of the page. Which I haven't had time to do yet :0))

It's really cool to share all this info on these games between enthusiasts of the genre. Thanks to you too! Yourr web portal is full of great links to explore!

@jake4480 @WoodooProd Castle of the Winds, now that's a name I haven't heard in a looong long time

WoodooProd,
@WoodooProd@mastodon.cloud avatar

@mihaelbrenko @jake4480

I never played it I think, but I known it as a Windows 3.1 game. I had saved a reference on my memo. Added on discoveries to play. Thank you very much! :0)

mihaelbrenko,
@mihaelbrenko@mastodon.social avatar

@WoodooProd @jake4480 yep, I remember playing it on Win 98 ages ago. It will be tricky to get it to run on a modern system though.

For retro gaming I have a dedicated machine with MSDOS and another with Windows XP. I'm going to try it out soon!

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@WoodooProd @mihaelbrenko that's so cool. I need to do this. I have a machine with Windows 7 but it's pretty slow, I have another with 2000 I think in my closet. I need to pull it out and see how well it runs.

WoodooProd,

@jake4480 @mihaelbrenko

The windows XP one have Windows 2000 a couple of weeks ago, but I changed the hard Drive and installed XP, because w2000 is is very capricious with games. 75% of old Windows games wouldn't launch. I would recommend to install XP.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@WoodooProd @mihaelbrenko you're probably right. I really loved 95 and 98 for games - 2000 this one had just because I grabbed it cheap years ago - and yeah, XP is a decent os.

WoodooProd,
@WoodooProd@mastodon.cloud avatar

@jake4480 @mihaelbrenko

XP is the more stable OS for retro gaming, and also retro compatible. It was a solid OS.

I love Windows 2000. I bought this old machine with Windows 2000 installed too. I just changed the hard drive to keep my Win 2000 safe.

rodneylives,

@mihaelbrenko You might try a virtualization platform like VirtualBox and run Windows on that?

@WoodooProd @jake4480

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@mihaelbrenko hahaha okay so you're a fan of old rogue games too! HELL YEAH hahaha. A big passion of mine.

mihaelbrenko,
@mihaelbrenko@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 I haven't played them much lately but I used to play them quite a lot. What are your favourites?

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@mihaelbrenko as a kid, it was Mac Moria that first hooked me, which is a clone of Moria - the LotR theme haha. I love the original Rogue too - there's several over at dosgames.com (https://dosgames.com/listing.php?sterms2=Rogue) that I play often via their cool in-browser DOSBox setup. ADOM, Angband, Avanor - so many great ones!

Englebert3rd,

@jake4480
@WoodooProd

One of my favourite rogue-likes is Powder.
I always make sure to put it on every device since the Nokia 6600.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@Englebert3rd @WoodooProd Powder! Oh, awesome I hadn't heard of that one! Gotta check it out. I play a bunch of modern ones that one or both of you guys may have seen me going on about 🤣 but it's these, and most are everywhere including Steam and some are even on Xbox. You guys tried any of these? (Sorry for the crappy pic haha).

Skull Rogue is cheesy, weird and fantastic (basically shovelware but I love it 🤣) and I always go back to a lot of the ones in the top row - Wizodd, Colt Canyon, Bit Dungeon Plus, Quest of Dungeons (turn based), and Demon's Tier+. Some of the ones near the bottom venture towards twin stick shooters, which I also love.

WoodooProd,
@WoodooProd@mastodon.cloud avatar

@jake4480 @Englebert3rd

I've only played a few, like Quest of Dungeons, or Bit Dungeon Plus. Very few, to be honest. :0)

I've saved the image for later exploration. :0))

Thanks!

@WoodooProd @Englebert3rd thank you for these!! I was just looking up about it too - GBA!! This just means I NEED to mod my Wii and DS so I can put it on both! It looks amaaazing

WoodooProd,
@WoodooProd@mastodon.cloud avatar

@jake4480 @Englebert3rd

I got the GBA too. :0)
And windows SDL.
Looks good! I'm quickly died!! lol

jake4480,

@WoodooProd @Englebert3rd ah, yes. Quickly died. The way of the roguelike. 🤣😂🤣
