Well, these all are a form of commercial advertising from the time. Meant to be eye catching - but in a pleasant rather than annoying way, and clearly taking pride in work.

@Infrogmation @noladon It's a completely different philosophy, right?

Most modern shops are very cautious to avoid making permanent changes to what are usually rented premises.

So often it's a chain of some sort, so they have to follow the chain style, too.

It's so dull and impersonal.

Streetscape of 2 story buildings with balconies, restaurants with tables along the sidewalk. Painted wooden sign hangs from pole, text "NACHO MAMA'S - Mexican Grill - NOLA". Cartoon artwork of a woman seen from waist up; she wears a green dress and a flower in her hair, she smiles and plays castanets. To her right is a large red chili pepper.
Small parade float, raised section with large letters reading: "Mama Roux - HOME is where the TARP is". The float is decorated with blue FEMA tarps and multiple plastic signs as common in the months of slow recovery after the Hurricane Katrina Federal Flood disaster in New Orleans, advertising services with telephone numbers. Various sign texts seen: "DEMO JOE - House Gutting - Local Boys". "I Buy Scrap Copper Wire". "We Tear Down Houses to the Ground". "We Sue". "Flooded by Katrina - Screwed by FEMA".
Colorfully painted food truck parked on street, with 2 story house in background. Central artwork depicts a slightly anthropormophized crawfish wearing a chef's hat and smock. Text above: "EFF ya CHEF". Text at left: "Oysters - Stuffed Burgers - Shrimp - Concoction Corn - Wings". Text at right: "I bet YA MAMA like it".

@Infrogmation @noladon FYI, some folks who are interested in old advertising signs on buildings use the term "ghost signs" and will happily find posts like this if you add hashtags such as

@jaeclectic @Infrogmation @noladon Exactly as I've just done 🙏🏽

I don't have anything from New Orleans on the site, but a search did throw up this post with a 'faux' ghost sign: https://ghostsigns.co.uk/2012/07/faux-ghostsigns/

New Orleans signs: Gators edition (volume II).

  1. Carrollton
  2. Central Business District
  3. Bayou St. John
  4. Lakeview

Interior of a supermarket. Shelf with local spices and cooking supplies has large chalkboard sign. Text: "Shop ROUSES For Your CAJUN Cooking Needs". Multicolor chalk cartoon of an alligator stirring a large cooking pot. A colorful parasol is above the gator's head; the gator smiles broadly with rows of sharp teeth. Text on the cooking pot: "Laissez les Bon Temps Roulez!" (Louisiana French for "Let the Good Times Roll".)
Bayou body of water with grassy banks, houses seen in background on far shore. In center is a square metal sign, black text and artwork on bright yellow. Text: "ALLIGATORS IN THE XIUHMOPOILLI". The text surrounds round artwork, copied from the center of the famous Aztec Sun Stone, depicting a stylized human face with tongue sticking out surrounded with Aztec glyphs in the form of reptile heads and an outer circle with points sticking out, a mythological depiction of the Sun. The pole holding up the sign has been decorated with ceramic artwork, at top and bottom of pole simple round discs, between them a ceramic depiction of a small alligator.
Display in small garden space, wooden fence in background, green shrubs in soil bed. Halloween plastic skeletons lie at left, one human form the other alligator. Sign in form of fake tombstone drawings of a pair of alligators at top with a fleur-de-lis in the center. Below is text: "RIP DUMPSTER GATOR 2021". At bottom is artwork depicting the tip of the tail of an alligator sticking up from the ground. Note: Reference is to a large dead alligator seen sticking out of a dumpster in an urban section of New Orleans after Hurricane Ida in 2021, with no one seeming to know how it got there.

Yes, Florida has a wealth of great alligator signs, maybe even more than Louisiana.

Here's one of my favorites, seen south of Jacksonville Florida back in 2014.

Offbeat Magazine published a wonderful obituary of John Sinclair with an emphasis on his New Orleans years.

https://www.offbeat.com/news/john-sinclair-1941-2024/

I will be presenting an hour-long tribute to John on my Crescent City Connection show this weekend, focusing on his jazz and blues inspired spoken word performances with his band the Blues Scholars. Catch it live on Saturday, 10am eastern on @WFMU's Rock 'n' Soul Radio stream.
