Homo naledi is the most interesting new human like primate. They are from South Africa, little people. walked upright, but primates walking upright goes way back.

They had hands just like modern humans but longish arms and powerful shoulders ... so they could probably zip up a tree.

They have small brains half modern size. This has made people astonished that they may have had fire.

I'm glad I'll never meet one, a smart little firebug with powerful arms sounds terrifying. 1/

@StillIRise1963 I can't think of a scenario where it isn't at the very least a gigantic waste of money.

Just imagine if the same budget had been allocated for a trained counselor, or even just an extra janitor?

You know, someone USEFUL!

One of the many problems with instances not dealing with antisemitism among their users at all or making a moderation announcement that borders on excusing antisemitism is that all the users who’ve been widely blocked, limited, and suspended elsewhere for antisemitism will notice your instance doesn’t do much about antisemitism and just start moving there.

Then your instance is filled with a whole lot of antisemitism.

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@TonyStark When deciding what to allow, always consider if it would be okay if 1000 people on your instance did exactly that same thing, every day.

It's never ever only just this once.

The internet is not that kind.

There's currently no dialysis for anyone living in .

Takes about 8 days for half of dialysis patients to die without it.

Maybe 40 days for all of them?

Note that some dialysis patients can't even manage 2 days without it.

It might not be getting shot, or bombed, but it still counts as murdering civilians.

It's a holiday today in Germany: Christihimmelfahrt (Christ drives to heaven) or something like that.

Which explains why it's so quiet, and the trash bins haven't been picked up.

My worst surgical living nightmare is a walk in park, compared to what children undergoing surgeries without anesthesias are suffering right now.

I had multiple surgeries in childhood for my polio paralysis. During one foot bridge surgery, I woke up in massive pain & was screaming from pain & felt terror upon seeing my foot all opened up with blood, bones & everything else showing. I was sedated again quickly but still remember that clearly.

are the strongest kids in the world.

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@msquebanh It's been on my mind a lot.

The medical staff can't have an easy time with it, either.

None of them expected to live through a time where they routinely operate on little children without sedation.

Every generation of kids wants to identify themselves in a new way, and yes, we've all been guilty of finding it funny or annoying, but the truth is we all did it. I'm happy for them that it's safer for them to really explore their identity, and sexuality in public, and not just little secret corners of the internet, or shadowy bars that people only whispered about. Maybe we are fine with words like Queer, Gay, or Ace, we fought for them to be fine, and maybe it feels strange that they would reject something so hard won. We should let them find their own identities though, it's what we wanted, right?! So, Cheers to all the new words and acronyms, I can never seem to keep up with, I hope each generation gets to be less scared to be themselves.

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr Where it becomes acceptable to just be queer, the number of people being queer out loud increases every generation.

It's no wonder new identities are surfacing, considering how much was always repressed.

We'll probably have a lot more people rejecting the cishet identity when everyone alive grew up in a time where it was normal to be queer.

I once had a boss who wanted the team to do team evaluations. The pushback was so hard, he had to go to HR and tell them it wasn't happening. HR told the team, "It's happening." We went to the Big Boss and told them, "Ain't happening, or we walk."

It didn't happen.

Okay, this might sound weird, but this is what I'm thinking of today. I'm assuming most of you know the idiom, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." I know it's about looking at the horse's teeth to check it's age and health, but in my heart I have an alternate history where it's about The Trojan Horse, which doesn't really even make much sense, but it's still living there rent free.

So, does anyone else do this, make up alternate histories for words or phrases? If you do, I'd love examples!

WEEK 32: Yesterday at the University of Amsterdam
Edit: it's been bulldozed by riot police.

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@fkamiah17 I found the stated reason absolute bullshit, too.

Municipal authorities and police quoted "fire safety" because the barricades might make it hard for the protestors to evac in an emergency.

Bitch, you ARE the emergency!

Especially galling when the current mayor of Amsterdam used to be the Green/Left party leader.

Supposedly a party of more nuanced thoughts than "must not upset Israel".

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@fkamiah17 They got staff and faculty to join the protest, because they were mad about it.

And no, a return to normalcy will not be granted.

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@fkamiah17 Yeah, I noticed a mood shift towards BDS months ago, and it's only gotten more intense.

This isn't some sort of top-down organizational thing.

People are genuinely disgusted and want Israel to fuck off forever.
